how you tell the little old lady to beat it like that? I miss lunch regularly. It keeps you slim.

Punctuality is important. Chronically late people are not something I tolerate well.

I've had workers thru the years, chronically tardy.
6:30 start, 6:40 arrival. After a few talks, with agreement changed start to 7:00. Of course, arrival at 7:10. Changed it once more, same result.
Unfortunately he was a great worker, but had to part ways.
I've experienced this with several people over the years.
I think it's dis-respectful in a work situation where other people rely on you.

I had a boss once, the General Manager of a hotel I worked at in the Denver Tech Center. He was no nonsense, a big 6' 6" Scottish guy. We had weekly staff meetings, and they started promptly on the dot in the conference room. He would then look at his watch, walk over to the conference room door and lock it. NO ONE was allowed in at that point. Might be extreme, but people learned fast to be there on time. Happened to the Director of Marketing, then the Food & Beverage Director. "Sorry, this meeting has started, come back next week."

I don’t think chronic tardiness is disrespectful.

It’s passive-aggressive.

If I invite people over beginning at 7 and they are late, not a problem. It’s way worse if they show up at 6:30.

The most effective way to overcome tardiness is to understand time needed to get where one is going.

If one has to be there at 7 - and it takes 15 minutes - leave no later than 6:30-6:40.

Newsflash.....no one is going to be on time if they wait until 6:50...or later.

Of course this concept requires both planning ahead and caring enough to do what is needed. Some people just do not have that capability.

We had a guy start about a month ago. We have standing meetings every Monday/Wednesday/Friday at 9AM. Every person in the company gives a quick list of what they're working on. This guy was regularly walking in the door 5-10 after. He didn't last more than 3 weeks.

When I was chronically sick for almost 3 months, had pneumonia, bronchitis... Still managed to get to work on time.

I fired an employee for being late more often than allowed by the employee handbook and lying about why she was late. I wrote about it here and got a ration of crap from PPOT denizens.

Being chronbically late is being disrespectful of the other people you are meeting with.

I was raised / taught to be early arrival, on time walking in for work, business, other meetings. If it is a casual cocktail or dinner party - 10 mins after start time

My Doctor and Dentist appointments are always on time.

i think being late sends a clear message. "your time is more important than anyone else's time"

a big dinner party with a schedule. get there on time. i think that's the point of the cocktail time in the beginning. to have some float to allow the stragglers to trickle in so we can all eat together.

now that night? my wife got it done..fastest shower i've ever seen her do, and dressed and gone. my martini was awesome.

great responses from most of you. thanks.

The issue I have with people that are chronically late is that its disrespectful.

Its saying "Everyone else should wait for me" and "My time is more important that everyone else"

From those people I always hear "Its not that I don't care - I just always underestimate the time I need." Thats BS. If you do it EVERY time then you know by now... ...you just don't care.

There are plenty of valid reasons for being late, Fred is a good example. A text or call goes a long way.

Yea, all the time. My dermatologist office is like clockwork, and only once in 15 years has he been delayed due to an emergency. My regular family doctor is usually very prompt as well.

We have one couple that we used to eat dinner with. We would schedule a time to meet, and pick the restaurant. After 15 minutes we ordered our food, and we were finishing up with our meal when they arrived almost an hour late. We sat for 15 minutes while I paid the bill, and we said it was nice to get to see them, but we have a others things to do than sit and watch them eat. We left.

After a year they invited us to meet them again. They were getting to the restaurant as we were leaving. We gave up on meeting them for dinner. Their time is not more important than ours.

It depends on why they are late. One of my last doctors (now retired) was always late. Which I figured was good. Based on the time he was spending with me, the appointment was done when he was done, not when the allotted time was done. I think most doctors are not in control of their appointment scheduling.

When I first moved to Oklahoma City, I picked a doctor that was close to my house, and looked like Marcus Welby, and he was a good doc. He was always 30 to 60 minutes late. One time I had an early 8:15 appointment. At 8:45 I just went to the back looking for him. He was sitting at his desk in his office reading the newspaper. I walked in, and I told him to instruct the nurse to collect my records, and that he was fired. I will find a doctor that respects my time. This was back in the 1980s so long before computers.

I found a different doctor and we got along great until the bum decided to retire on me. My current doc is younger than I am. That was weird at first.
