Slightly different scenario; I worked with a guy who inherited a slab of mahogany from his dad that was about 75 years old. He had it made into a guitar (Fender Jaguar replica, just for reference.) and after a lot of work and a lot of cost he said the same thing about his new guitar. Didn't sound great and weighed a ton.
That camphor seems to have a little 'illustration' in the middle of it. A tree from an enchanted forest?

Oh, I was thinking acoustic guitar. I have a stash of Rosewood I really should give up to an acoustical guitar maker.

If I was still doing the antiques that rosewood would be handy. I had to use Bubinga a couple times to fake it. I was authorized to do so. Once finished it was damn close. I have some rosewood veneer stashed but I have so much just-in-case supplies that I really need to have a fire sale.
Or donate it. |

I had it scoped hoping it was Brazilian rosewood but it's Indian, the next best thing. Acoustically pretty much the same but Brazilian, being the most protected trees on the planet and unobtainable is ridiculously priced. Forget board foot, it's sold more often at board square inch. A ¼x7x21 is for sale on line right now for $850. If mine was brazilian I'd be sitting on a pile of dough, my boards are all ¾ and ⁵/⁴ thickness. Still valuable but I've been using it on projects and will continue to do so. If you need a beefier chunk for a repair Zeke I'll send you a piece

Does anybody have any experience installing cedar shingles with a cordless roofing nailer? I know you can adjust the pressure with a pneumatic nailer to prevent over penetration and splitting. Can one even use a cordless nailer? Most have a depth adjustment but is that enough?

A cordless nailer will work fine, a ½" stance stapler would too. Just be sure to use galvanized fasteners

Thank you.
I’ll also cheat a little and put the nails more than an inch from the edges. I hope it works. |

Memories of setting valve timing on my 911 I found out my machine is out of square 0.03" , fixed that, not that it bothered me that much, now all axes and travel is spot on

Got an old CM tablesaw that looks new underneath that I'm restoring. 1950's cast iron heavy as hell. After new bearings for the arbor, I got the blade at 0.005 parallel to the table slots. I think I can do better but I ran out patience. If it's 5 thou out in the correct orientation that can be good. Don't know, got tired of dicking with it and cinched up the bolts.
You would think for wood it's no big deal. It is to an extent, but not like a mill. That's next. Last edited by Zeke; 03-02-2026 at 05:09 PM.. Reason: thousandths, |

Then again it might not make any difference. What else can you do really? If you under drive several you just finish them off with your hammer. I've had uniform wood siding take nails differently on the same board because of what was behind it. I just went back and set any nails that were proud with a hammer. |

![]() ![]() My latest wood project (medicine cabinet) almost done. I ordered some soft close hinges on line and they came without the mounting plates. Went back online and the mounting plates are on back order a month wait, grrr, now they tell me! Tiger wood with Rosewood interior, inlays and miter splices. ⅜" polished tempered glass shelves and beveled mirror. An interior motion detector light being delivered by Amazon today sometime

![]() ![]() ![]() Finally got the thing hung. Self closing hinges and motion detecting light. Had to wait for hinges (long story). One of the fanciest cabinets I've built and the real art of it is where I put it. Above the plastic utility sink in the laundry room 😊 |

I was looking back and forth between the cabinet and the cabinet surroundings, and back and forth, and back and forth, .... LOL!

These are my latest projects - a plaque for an event coming up at the of this month and some pen/pencil holders as awards. The event is hosted by a friend I've known from HS 50 years ago - it's a weekend of skeet shooting, long distance rifle shooting (+900 yards!), pistol shooting, lots of eating, card playing, drinking (only after gun events are held) and also guitar playing. I'll cut a picture frame for mounting the plaque and I'll have everyone in attendance (about 30 guys) sign it first. The engraving came out great - darker image sections and the lighter image sections actually make this a 3d image!
![]() Four of the pen/pencil holders will go to the top two finishing clay shooting pairs and the fifth will be for the host's office desk.
