O.k., The threat of the stick seems to be working. What's the carrot?
-does the bill include a manufacturers requirement to sell the oem equipment--at reasonable prices? -does it include modern replacement powertrain systems? And at reasonable prices, which would accomplish such? -what kind of numbers/statistics of polution are there? How many different sources, and what sampling methodology? Is California going to be the "dumping" ground of vintage vehicles? That might be a good thing considering the climate, but since many of the true enthusiasts only use them part time because of the time/money spent, it seems rather odd. |

Sounds like some Porsche owners here are going to get very good at engine swaps . . .
With my '89, I'm pretty sure when I do have the money, time, and inclination to mod the motor, I'll make sure to keep a second stock motor on hand.

Or, did I just miss your whole point? Anyway, if you guys email your thoughts to our dickhead, liberal-ass governator, make sure you include Bobby's girly man comment. This jerk is such a showboater anyway. Did you see the deal about him unloading an "Arnold's Moving Company" van with AMC boxes for a business relocating to one of our industrial slums from Las Vegas? A printing company, no less. I thought we ran all of them out of here because of the pollution they cause. Go freakin' figure. Go Arnold. (loser). |

It's still BS. I simply cannot believe that the number of vintage cars on the road makes this legislation worthwhile. Why not require lawnmower companies (weed wackers, lawn tractors, chainsaws, etc.) to clean up their BRAND NEW motors and leave my vintage Porsche alone. Why not the ten zillion power boats? Are motorcycles really not covered in the smog laws? If that's true, I'm doubly irritated.
How about explaining to me why, here in California, there are more SUV's with huge (gas slurping) wheels and tires than there are back East where there actually is, ahem, snow and ice periodically? I wonder how many solo-driver SUV's there are in the family of that legislator that proposed this law.

[b]Not sure what you are referring to on the 'stick and carrot.' [b/]
-that's the "creating reasonable/implamentationable" parts-which-work-and-is-effective part. To lead the populous, make small goals achevable, then create more and more. [b]On the rest: Are you dreaming? Or just being sarcastic.[b/] -yup, I'm being sarcastic that manufacturers would voluntarly offer a less polluting powerplant at a resonable price. The point was rules folllow money. money follows rules.

although ahhnold is better than davis, he's got a pink stripe a
mile wide when it comes to the "environment". it's getting to the point where no one who values liberty will choose to remain in california (oops, i mean caleefornia).

Zeke, the middle-of-road "conservative democrat", and the "liberal republican", are the best statistical probablilities which will have "power-of-populous" behind their agenda.

You could always buy a piece of property in one of the 4 counties that don't require smog testing bi-annualy. That's what I did, and will be switching the title to show it in the future.

Thanks jyl. I've been casually looking for a core 3.3 motor to build into a 500hp efi motor, partly to limit the amount of down time on my daily driver( after all every day in SoCal is a "top down" day!). This will certainly help justify this project ![]() I would have less problem with this turn of events if they allowed us to make any mods we wanted as long as we hit our target numbers. I'm sure with some hi-po cats and efi I could do better than CIS. |

It would seem like the internet could be a useful tool for renting (or pooling money and buying, with multiple owners) smog-legal exhausts and intakes.

Has anyone noticed that in the last five or so years, how many "Car shows for Charity" have been held in Cali.? Does anyone know how many countless millions have (and are being) been raised for things like the Junior Blind, Aids, MS, Breast Cancer, education , etc. ? Well if it wasn't for the 30 year old Classic, Antique, Euro sports or American muscle car , these shows would be empty. A.B.2683 is scapegoating our California car culture.
Besides seeing a Chevron tv ad for some healthy seagulls flying over some water...what did Cali oil refineries, and other heavy industrial polluters contribute to charities ? Grab a monthly mag called "Automotive Calendar of Events", published here in SoCal. In a given month there are dozens of Charitable car events going on, usually organized by grassroots people like yourself. What's the best choice, a well tuned 30 year old car, proll'y driven less than 10k miles a year- or a smokestack running 24/7 in El Segundo ?...do the math Arnold.

Unfortunately, Arnold has rapidly succumbed to the same bureaucratic forces as every other politician, signing ludicrous anti-gun and anti-car legislation, not living up to his promises to save our schools which are still struggling with massive budget shortfalls, and not passing a balanced state budget by the legal deadline.
He is now part of the "Borg collective mind" that is our government. Yawn, same "stuff" different day. So now Arnold drives around in an armored Hummer that probably gets 6mpg for chrissakes and is surrounded by private security forces with who-knows-what kind of "banned" firearms, smokes cigars, and yet he is in the process of reviewing and possibly signing bills that will arbitrarily ban the populace from freely buying or using certain products. As a native Californian, it pains me to think about moving away, but if the landslide into socialist hell continues then I will have to seriously consider it. I certainly don't feel the need to pay large sums each year to be "protected" from other law-abiding citizens who might happen to buy something that the government deems is not good for me, while meanwhile all of us can freely buy other products (i.e., cigarettes and alcohol) that are protected from meaningful legislative controls due to megabuck lobbies and yet kill FAR more people each year than the objects of these BS bills our elected officials are passing. Fortunately, as long as our Hollywood Elite denizens are car fiends, I do not think absolute bans of classic cars will occur. However, the privilege to drive classic autos will more and more become the domain of the rich and well-connected. And, of course, as we have seen repeatedly in other areas, corruption and black-market economics will take over. Bribes, faked smog checks, forged titles, out-of-state plates, you name it. Plus, the continued exodus of many upper-income people to other states/countries. Meanwhile the gub'mint loses out on substantial revenues but keeps on smiling because they're saving us from hurting ourselves by forcing us to drive a new Toyota Prius instead of a 1979 911. I betcha that California will be the first state in the Union to ban gasoline, and that it will not occur terribly far into the future!

Team California
|
The bottom line behind all of these declining quality of life issues, (including the pollution that makes legislatures pass stupid laws), is out of control population growth, and just plain growth period.
You cannot stick your head in the sand and believe that CA., (or the world), can continue to import and make more people, then make all of these people big consumers, build endless suburban crackerbox house colonies w/ new freeways to reach them, more cars, (sorry, Chevy Tahoes), to transport all of these new suburbanites, (one at a time), Semi trucks to stock the Wallmarts everyday w/ cheap ass goods from slave shops in Bangladesh, etc., etc,........, with ancient 20th century technology in place. There are major human stupidity problems happening right now in the world, and guess what? A Porsche 911 might be as obsolete as a friggin' 1903 Oldsmobile in the next few years. I'll miss them as much as anyone, but the writing is on the wall. And if you live in some last, sparcely populated region of the U.S. and are reading this, just ignore and go back to your regularly scheduled program. Move along, nothing to see...........
