I can tell you that my old '88 would redline 5th which according to the numbers is about 150. I did it once when the engine was at around 125k miles. Stock the engine should have had ~215hp. My '88 should have been less aerodynamic than an early car due to the bellows bumpers and rear flares. I think that car would need 275-300 hp to get to that speed, but if the engine is very, hotrodded then that's possible.
If the engine is not stock and that hot then this guy should say so since that would be a selling point.

FWIW, my '73 came with chrome grills and the driving lights, all of the cars without the driving lights did have black grills. I've not seen a set of factory black grills that had the provision for the
through-the-grill lights. Has anyone else seen them?? My guess is that the oil-cooler was added, I've had a couple of 73S cars with Behr air and no front cooler. But it should have been a trombone cooler if it was original...

I see the problem. Tire size. He could have an error of 4-6% in the speedometer.
Aerodynamics are the main reason it ain't going to happen. There is a calculation that will prove what is needed under the hood to overcome drag. It's a moot point for now. Tom

The Ebay ad was brought to our attention because of the "hard to believe" manner in which this seller promoted the car. Beyond that who cares? Albeit sorta fun to pick the claims apart it's really not serious is it?

My RS replica in the day, weighed a couple hundred pounds less than his car (~2150) and had a stout 2.7 RS spec MFI motor making ~235-240 hp. It could only do about 150-155 mph....
Seems farfetched... So I say BS too. 0-60 was low 5's, so maybe I could smoke a 930 until it got rolling? Stock 2.4S will never get to 165; I don't care how good that stuff you're smokin' is! I agree, sometimes the verbage in these eBay ads is their worst enemy. The type of people that would be impressed by or even believe these outlandish claims would never buy. And the potential educated buyers, are put off or at least put on guard by this type of wordplay.

My RSR style race car, granted with superwide body, has by race car standards a mild 3.0 putting out about 270hp. I know fairly precisely by the gearchart and tire diameter what the top speed is. At Daytona, I can only pull about 6300 rpm in top gear, which equates to just a whisker over 150mph. It is definitely aerodynamically limited, but that lil Targa would have to be making over 300hp to reach that speed.

it's depressing to me that i've spent enough time on both boards (this & earlyS) to understand and appreciate where many of the posters are coming from. many, many years of longhood experience are represented in this thread.
btw, this auction should be making everybody that passed on Bobby Smith's silver/red targa absolutely ill!

I think it's healthy. If you place an ad on ebay for a Porsche 911 - you will be open to criticism. Bring your a-game, bring a thick skin. Be able to back your claims. Sort of an ebay net nanny.
I personally love the color.  but loose the rubber bumpers, they look like boobies. Love the seats -  but man the carpet looks dirty and worn Door sills look good -  but where is the under pan shots (which should be a requirement of any early car ad) No dash crack - which means to me it has been well taken care of (or replaced)  Some of the best looking door pockets I have seen in a long time on an early car  There are many posters on this thread that have more knowledge on early cars than you can shake a stick at - and I would defer judgement to them, or those that have actually touched, driven, or know the car.

Obviously real "S" cars are selling well on eBay.
Here's another sitting at $44k. The early cars continue to shine. Maybe if I converted my 73E from RS replica w/ all the race goodies back to stock.....  Nah!
