I hate calling and telling the tech that I have done this, this, and this only to have them say OK and ask me to do the things I just listed as having been done.

Back 11 years ago when the Dell computer I am typing this on was brand new I fired up the computer for the first time and the cooling fan sounded like a jet engine. I thought the computer was going to move across the floor from the thrust.

I called tech support and the Indian guy had me start with unplugging the speakers. WTF? It was not the speakers, it was the fan. Anyway we had just bought 5 of the same system and only this one had the jet engine fan. They sent an on-site repair guy to fix it.

He instantly can tell the fan is just nuts. He calls in and they start on the same things to try and nothing works. Once again they start with unplug the speakers. He told them it is not the speakers it is the damn fan! He finally hung up and logged in on-line and had a new motherboard ordered. He came back two days later and installed the new motherboard and all was fine.

It was dang funny watching a guy in corporate long sleeves and tie doing the standard procedure that is policy trying to talk to some tech support Indian and get the same idiot treatment.

Don't think the frustrating tech support is the east indians fault.

Friend of mine did att tech support for their wireless installers for business installations like restaurants and hotels. He had to go thru and check all the check boxes to track the problems. Even though 9 times out of 10 the problem was the router was programed wrong and both he and the installer knew it. He said it was nice to get an seasoned installer that knew what was going on and would just answer his questions so he could check off the boxes. The sad part was, even though the both knew what setting were supposed to be, they could not change them. Instead, they would get an new router sent out and the installer would have to send the bad on back.

In HS is wrote a manual for fixing TVs. The first thing to check? Is it plugged in?.

I've lost count on how many things I've repaired where the stupid operator has left it in O-F-F mode.

One of those Dell 8400s that is just like computer that mostly runs a printer-faxer-scanner. The monitor is off so if I hear a FAX come in I wake the machine up to check what the fax was. 99% are junk and a few per year are useful. Anyway that computer would not wake up a few days ago. I could not get it to even load the BIOS. It just hung with the BOIS trying to load. It is 10 years out of support so I started poking around.

I finally figured out it was not happy with a memory module. It is now just a 512 MB computer but it only does one task. I have never seen a memory module just stop like that. It is on a battery backup so it was not a power surge.

Computer memory is a whole bunch of little tiny on-off switches. And even though they are "Solid State" they still wear out.

You don't realize how much you turn your head in your day to day life, until it hurts like a MF to do so!

Got up this morning and pretty much couldn't move my head my neck was so stiff. Still not sure what caused it. Went and saw the chiropractor first thing and he got it a bit more mobile, but it still hurts to move much at all. Sitting at a desk was impossible. At home now laying flat in bed with my computer propped up so I can get some work done.
