Oral surgery really sucks. It makes it really hard to eat, and that is kinda necessary to heal and grow stronger. After one bout of oral surgery of mine the surgeon told me to stop and get some vanilla ice cream or any ice cream with nothing lumpy in it. I asked him to write that on a prescription pad along with the pain pills prescription.

I got the pills at a pharmacy, and stopped at the local dairy store and picked up some ice cream. I told my wife, hands off, that is my medicine and showed her the prescription.

So now when we figure it is time to get some ice cream we call it medicine.

So get her some ice cream, and that at least she can let it melt in her mouth and get some nutrition. No chewing needed. And it covers the taste of blood.

My wife took her Macan in to the dealer for some service work. As it is four years old now there are a few extra things to do.

They gave her a 2020 Cayenne as a loaner. It is for sale for 70K. We ain't buying. It is a cool car. Just HUGH. The GPS is cool in that it is very wide and with no destination it just shows you where you are on the map at a several miles out view. It shows lots of gas stations and the interstates that are a few miles away. It can be programmed to list restaurants instead of gas stating in case the driver needs to eat and not the car.

My mean ol boss made me go work on his 911 today. The valves are adjusted, almost done with the spark plug replacement. The #6 and the #4 exhaust valves were just a little tight. They still had play, just not quite enough. Minor adjustment and all buttoned up. The rest of the valves adjustments were all perfect.

The plugs had 25K miles on them and for many folks would be reused. I figure "while I am in there" and have easy access to the plugs, replace em.

I stopped to eat and I am about to head out to finish the last two plugs, and put everything back together and pour in some oil.

I don't remember the last time I adjusted some valves. 1995 maybe?

Phew, pretty much done. I will need to go on a longer test drive to get the thermostat to open to check the oil level, and top it off.

Plugs are changed. Valves adjusted, brake fluid replaced. I was out there all dang day, and I had a head start because the oil was drained already. I am so happy I an not a professional mechanic. One thing for sure, I would be really skinny, with no money to buy food or beer.

So if anyone needs the valves adjusted let me know, I charge $5,000 plus parts. I would not do it for less.

I used to check or adjust the valves on my 914 ever 3,000 miles at the oil change and the feel I have, the contortions needed to get to the 911 valves is the tough part for me. That and getting the heater blower out of the way, then the AC compressor, remove all the spark plug wires from the spark plugs, and getting the valve covers off just takes time when I am the world's slowest mechanic.

Yea, I figure it was a $5,000 valve adjustment, as that is what I would charge to do a a 911 that was not mine.

Plus the cost of the oil, filter, spark plugs and valve cover gasket set and brake fluid.

The good news is I am set for another 15,000 miles or so. I went a bit over that this time from procrastination. With just the #1 and #3 exhaust valves just a tiny bit tight, I did not push too far. And it is certainly driven hard. It sees the redline regularly. Hallett next week will be 1/4 tank of gas to get there, 1/2 a tank on track, and a 1/4 tank to get home. The gas mileage on track is about 10 to 12 MPG.

I adjusted the valves in my DD Honda last year. And I think I did a better job than the factory Honda mechanic who last touched the valvetrain. My Civic had its engine rebuilt with a new block a couple years back. Apparently due to some casting or metallurgy flaw, for several years Civics were known to develop fine cracks in the block, which would leak out all the coolant. This happened to me at 9.5 years and 132K miles of ownership. Honda actually extended a goodwill warranty out to 10 years a after purchase.

Fortunately, I caught the problem while driving on the highway but before the motor overheated. So Honda was willing to replace the leaky engine block.

Maybe a year after they rebuilt it, I noticed increasing valve noise. Worse on acceleration. So finally when the car was due for an oil change, I decided to adjust the valves. I think one of the adjusting screws had absolutely no tension on it. Now the engine is audibly smoother, and no clattering on acceleration. Because access is good on a transverse I-4, it took my shade tree hands maybe an hour to do.

Welp, I took the 911 for an oil warm up drive. 10 quarts of oil and all is fine.

Now I guess the Elky is feeling jealous for getting pushed off it's normal parking spot and having the 911 on the lift. The AC is just cool, not cold. It is just 73 degrees and the AC on max was maybe 60 degrees. The compressor cycles, so I guess I will hook up the gauges and see what is up. I have not tought the AC on the ELky in many years. I noticed last fall it was a little less than the normal stellar. Oh well, always a project to do when ya own cars that are a combined 71 years old.

Won't be long and we can get the Cobra out. Needs an oil change though. Should have changed it when I put it away last fall. Oh well. It is easy in that car even if it isn't cheap.

We were supposed to have some rain last night, and we did, 0.01 inch. Today so far we are up to 0.05 inch. No flash flooding as yet.

Maybe we can get a 1/4 inch today and that will be nice. Two days of mid 70s was sure nice.

All this talk of valve adjustments, I need to do one on my truck. It’s due by miles. Big rattling ass diesel though, so you can’t hear if it needs it! 🤣

It’s stupid easy to work on, once you get climbed up into the engine bay. 🤣🤣🤣

get an engine hoist and fall protection harness and just hover over the engine bay.

That would work! 🤣

Pro diesel mechanics have a “topsider” creeper. It’s like a ladder with a platform hanging out. You roll it over the engine bay, crawl up and lay on your belly to work! I’d get one but I’ve got nowhere to store it!
