Back when I left home to go be a full adult I hopped in my car and drove 850 miles to OKC to look for a job. Found one one within an hour, I drove back 850 miles to pick up all my belongings and stuff it in the smallest U-haul trailer. And drove 850 miles back to my now dumpy garage apartment. So 2,500 miles in a week, and at work on Monday morning. I am really glad I don't have to do that again.

I fly out Tuesday afternoon. Probably hit the road Wednesday and head for the border where we may have to wait on negative test results to get over said border. Then drive like mad from gas station to gas station. Luckily the following Monday is a holiday cause I have to be back at work next week.

Man, you know how to party on the weekend!

At least you will get to spend some time close up with your daughter and wife! I presume the gas stations also sell some food for the humans and not just the vehicles.

That is the kicker. ON their way up the gas stations closed early. So timing is everything. I think before leaving town I'll grab a 5 gallon gas can. That may add an extra 100 miles to the tanks.

It was an rather boring F1 race, two laps behind the safety car and done. It has to suck for the fans standing in the COLD rain for 5 hours to see that.

I don't think I have seen an F1 race since the 90s.

I just love the technology of F1 and there have been a few good races this year.

They were interviewing one of the drivers and asked how much pressure it takes to make the astonishing 5.3 G braking maneuvers before taking the hairpin at 60 MPH. He said he used all the strength he had, and then as fast as possible, let off "just a little". Of course he is thrown forward at over 5 G and somehow knows just how much to let up off the brakes to avoid lockup. Then dive into the corner and pull 5.6 G in one direction, wait until the corner straightens out and accelerate at over 3 G while change the steering wheel setting for battery charging or brake bias and the literately thousands of possible changes all while avoiding another car trying to pass or trying to pass another car. And they do that for the entire race.

The one thing that really needs to change is the aerodynamics, and to get to using just mechanical grip not so much the aero forces, just to make passing easier and a better watching for the fans. They need enough aero to keep the cars on the ground and not fly off into the air and off the track, but not so much that the car in front just controls the race pace.

Watch out for the bears!

My friend that drives down from Anchorage, in his 85 911 says the bears have learned a parked and broken down car is typically a canned human snack. Just tear off the door and munch down on a tasty snack.

Have a good trip.

Seems if the door is not locked they know to just open the door. This type of thing shows up on Pet Collective a lot!

Oh boy, time to go mow the yard.

I am so ready to be over this crazy high humidity. The temps dropped a lot last night and the humidity is at 91% and 75 degrees. The grass is just WET with dew. It makes it a muddy mess to edge and trim and the grass clumps up instead of mulching like it should. Yesterday it was nearly noon before the grass was dried and it was 90 degrees. So another wet mowing. Oh joy.

And of course, there is NO breeze or wind at all. Just a light breeze would be helpful to dry things out. A good windy day would really help. ZERO mph wind is not helpful.

Was nice when I mowed last night. 72 and a light breeze. Took 45 minutes longer than usual because it is growing like weeds right now.

We have had stupid high humidity, and fairly low winds all summer. It did pick up to a very light breeze of 2 MPH. We have had a weird summer. Not one 100 degree day so far and we may well escape triple digits this year. Last night at sunset it had dropped to mid 70s and it was really nice out there.

In the days when I had a real job I often mowed just before sunset, and I have enough lights in the back yard to mow an hour after sunset.

Now that the mean ol boss makes me mow his yard I prefer to just get up and not take a morning shower, and hit the yardwork, cool off a bit and then take a shower. The one thing that sucks about morning mowing is it is to early for an after mowing beer. Not many things are better than looking out over the perfectly mowed and edged yard with a cold beer in hand.

I went to lunch with an old buddy I had not seen in years. He is still just as weird as ever. I have known him for 30+ years and he told me way back then that he carried a pistol at all times. OK, no big deal. Oklahoma has open carry as a no permit "constitutional carry" so it is perfectly legal for him to carry his pistol on his hip in plain view, and he does, because he can.

Interesting guy, and he has a shooting range 40 feet from his front door. I usually collect some old milk jugs and bring them with me if I go poke holes in them. I need to go practice as I have not shot them in a while.

Dang it.

The trusty El Camino has another issue. After just 35 years and 372,000 miles the dang windshield wiper switch quit. Unlike the fan switch was was a cinch to replace, they start building the car around the damn switch, and then add in a connection to the turn signals, the dimmer switch, the cruise control, wipers of course, but also the delay and squirter function. Of course the steering wheel has to come off, (with a puller) the lock plate for the ignition switch, (special tool) the ignition key, the turn signal and then I get to drop the steering wheel off the mounts to have access to get the wires for the wiper switch up the channel to the connections to the wire harness.

It is a total rubrics cube of individual pieces to reassemble. One of the real challenges is getting the clip over the switch for the actual ignition, with the high beam dimmer rod in place, and get the tilt steering wheel spring held down and aligned. It is a very frustration task.

Even more annoying, if you search YouTube for instruction there are endless instructional vids on how to do the turn signal switch, but not one, not a single one on how to R&R the wiper switch for a delay switch on the tilt column setup.

Right now I have the steering wheel parts all over the bed of the Elky, and the floorboards and I am almost to the point of starting reassembly. I will be out there all day I suspect getting it back together. And there is just no professional shop I could have taken it to that I know of. The joys of owning an old car.

I have had it apart once before long ago because the column on G body cars all get loose and four bolts have to be removed and red locktighted. I am almost back to those bolts. I did that repair over 20 years ago so I don't remember much other than it was a real pain to do.
