Light weight batteries really changed RC planes and helicopters.

If they hadn't put a highway thru where the best flying field in OKC was, I would probably still be flying planes. Not much into the park flyer thing.

Cars and trucks as well. I remember when the first LiPoly and brushless motors came out where you could make the buggies do wheel stands down the front straight and still run 12 minutes or more. Before that, you had a high end motor and several cells to be able to pull the front wheels up and if you were lucky you could still last the entire 4 minute race.

When in grade school I builded a remote control tank model that was a little over a foot long. You could drive it around, rotate the turrent and raise and lower the cannon. It had a wired remote, but it was still fun to play with. The four D sized batteries lasted for a couple of hours. Eventually the tracks got messed up beyond my repair capabilities. That pretty much took the fun right out of it. The kit was one of the things I saved my lawn mowing monies for.

Now days the R/C tanks have airsoft on them to have battles.

Yea, but when I was a kid I had a Chemistry set.



I could make stink bombs and all sorts of cool stuff. It had a denatured alcohol fueled burner and lots of glass test tubes and beakers.



I had hours of unsupervised fun.

My nephew had a chemistry set until he set their garage on fire with it. He's the one that makes his own 4th of July fireworks display now. He's livin' his childhood dream!

If I had the time to try it, I'd build one of the foamy trainers from www.flitetest.com and put the AS3X electronics in it... Cheap to repair and kid proof. Perfect trainer!

Something slow would be perfect here. We have a charter school nearby that doesn't have a fence on the football field. Plenty of space to cruise around in!

We have a really good hobby shop here in OKC. The guy knows, recommends, and sells only the best stuff for the most successful RC learning and flying experience. i try to buy all my stuff from him to keep him in business.

I need to get me one of the magnifying glass desk lamp things to I can do some updates and repairs on my Helis. I would still call myself a novice. Just above a beginner. Still trying to learn to make clean turns.

35 years ago I used to drive past a small hobby shop called Hobby Lobby. It was their first store. I went in and looked for model airplane stuff and it was a pitiful stock of parts in a corner. They had a lot of home decorating junk. I figured they would go out of business in short order. Now there is likely a Hobby Lobby near you as well. We have them all over the place here.

Most hobby shops that catered to men went out of business when the VCR and movie rental got popular. Women's sewing, crafts, and decorating stuff only took a small hit. The men's hobby shops are having a difficult time now because people are buying stuff from the internet instead of their local hobby shop. I hope the good ones can stay in business.

The RC flying hobby has changed. Planes used to be big enough that it was much better to join and club and fly at a flying field. Now with the smaller electric stuff people tend to do the park or parking lot flying thing. They get something off the internet and go crash it until they get frustrated and quit.

When you joined a club you had to start with a trainer, it was inspected, and an instructor made sure you could fly before you were turned loose minimizing the crashing part. If it was a good club you were required to build a trainer instead of using an ARF. That way you learned how to setup and repair your planes.

When i started I got the trainer, motor and radio that the club guys recommended. When I had problems they were quick to help fix it and I rarely had problems. There was a couple of guys that used different motors and radios than the other guys used. They would come out and mess with the motor trying to get it to run right. Then once they did get it flying they would invariably have some sort of radio glitch that would crash their plane. But they claimed those were the best motors and radios.

We have two local shops within about 5 miles of the house. When I need parts for one of the trucks I just go there. I figure when I start piecing together a foamy, I'll go buy most of the parts there.
