Yes.

As to why, I expect it is a combination of Genetics, eating the wrong things based on previous, not enough exercise, and a lack of discipline.

I now have a good understanding of what works for weight loss and for weight maintenance. Weight is dropping and will continue until I get to where I want.

I just did a BMI calc...I am 6ft 1inch tall at 199lbs. Came in at 26.24 BMI which is "overweight" I recently dropped 20lbs to get the handles off and could go down another 10 to reach "normal", but I like butter, bacon, and bread...so no.

Has anyone noticed that you don't see all that many fat peops in their 60's. Even less in their 70's. Either they're staying home or have moved to the next chapter. I'm in my fitties....

I had a conversation this morning with my girl. She's a 45YO runner/boot camp junkie/vegetarian/health freak. Crux of the talk was why we dance around the fat discussion and accept weight gain and irresponsible health habits form those we are closest to. Not so many years ago, family members and friends might mention one's weight gain. That doesn't happen any more - we just accept it. She asked me if she should say something to me when weight goes up. My answer - hell yes. Checks and balances. I think we worry about hurting each others feelings way too much.

There's no reason to be overweight - we have the knowledge.

I'm 6'2" and weigh in at 181. 15 lbs of that I gained in the last 7 months because I quit smoking and started snacking. Although I'm in my BMI those 15 lbs are sitting in my belly and I don't like it. Time to start walking the dog and doing sit ups I guess.

My weight has yo-yoed between 145 lbs and 212 lbs over the last 30 years. And all of that can be attributed to how much exercise I get daily, not nearly as much to what or how much I eat.

When I was 145 lbs I was running 5 miles a day, every day. When I was 212 lbs I was working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, and didn't have the energy, motivation, whatever, to exercise.

Thanks for this thread. You have just given me the motivation to lose some weight again. Right now I am at 192 lbs, about 30 pounds over a good weight for me. I can't run anymore with the bad knees, but I can certainly get on the stair climber, even though it's boring as hell.

I start tonight when I get home from work.

If youre fat, you eat too much. Its really that simple, it seems. Calorie in, calorie out. If you dont exercise, dont eat so much.

I started to get fat in my early 30s. I was living in Louisiana. That didn't help. It is much easier to stay slim in CA where you can go outside to exercise and live a more active lifestyle overall. Also, nobody knows how to cook Cajun food here, so it is easier to stay away from the calories.

I am watching my weight closely - at least weigh in weekly. As soon as I let up, it will go up at about a pound a month. In 10 years I'd be morbidly obese! One thing I never do is buy bigger clothes when the pants start getting tight. Eventually you will have to do something if you don't want to go to work with your butttons open ...

It hasn't gotten easier, it is really true that your body needs less and less food to maintain its weight with age. I am looking forward to retirement where I will have time to do 2+ hours of cardio a day and go back to eating what I want!

Siberian - that's great. The point of this thread was not to beat on anyone, but to open the discussion why we allow ourselves to slip into such bad habits knowing the damage it does to our bodies. While I'm obese on a BMI, I'm not in reality. But most importantly, I'm damaging my health in multiple ways by carrying the extra weight.

Bigger picture - think of the health care costs caused by obesity. Cardiac, stroke, arthritis and other maladies are in large part directly related to being overweight. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Main reason for everyone getting fat in the US is the lack of home cooking and the garbage that is available at restaurants, take out and ready to eat. I notice this when I travel. It is really tough to get a decent meal at a restaurant that isn't huge in size and laden with calories. If I had to travel a lot, I probably would be fat.

At home my plate never shines with half a mm of grease when I am done eating ...

most fat folks simply don't care..
and many parents don't care if their kids get fat...
especially if they are heavy..
that's really our problem..
folks got fat & that took time...
now most of this country IS fat..

There ARE parents that disagree with their children's eating habits.

I went on a diet 5 years ago and got crap from my spouse. Implication was that I was dissing her cooking. On the contrary it was very good tasting but wrong in nutrition. My older daughters are now reaping the 'benefits' of her refusal to change.

My youngest saw my logic and changed her habits....hopefully she will convince her older sisters to modify their habits since I am no longer in the picture.

I'm 6'1", 185, and in good shape.

I have no problem admitting, though, that it is a CONSTANT struggle. I'm in the gym for cardio and weights 5 days a week, consistently, for the past 10 years. And pretty much hating every minute of it.

I am also eternally vigilant about what I eat. I pretty much stay away from processed foods, esp. processed carbs and sugar.

I went for almost 3 years straight without having any sugar at all.

I weigh myself every day, like a girl, and cut back on food and increase exercise if I gain even 2 lbs.

It sucks, I hate it, but I simply cannot accept the alternative.

I'm big on personal responsibility, but here in the US (and probably most of the world, some day), the foods that are served, advertised, put on shelves, etc. really is horribly fattening. Frankly, it's just crap. The amount of sugar and processed carbs in everything is incredible, the nutrition is low, and the calories are through the roof.

To remain at an ideal weight in that environment, while of course possible and done by many, is simply too much to ask from the majority of people. It takes a level of education, dedication, will power and even money (eating healthy, whole foods and proteins is expensive) that most simply can't pull together. They simply have no chance.

We have so much debate about our "health care" system, but the REAL problem we have isn't health care (i.e., doctors, hospitals, insurance, etc.), but a very, very unhealthy population. (20% still smoke, god knows what the % of overweight and obese is these days). And, like most things, it just gets worse and worse.

No country is immune to it, though. 20 years ago, for instance, there were almost no overweight in China. Now, 38% are overweight. As the fast food restaurants have flooded China in the past 7-10 years, the obesity rate has gone up 5X.
