I don't consider myself fat. I'm 51 years old, 6'1" and stay rock steady at 200lbs. I have no set exercise program or plan. I am on my feet all day though. (mechanic) I eat and drink what I want and stay the same weight. I wouldn't mind losing 10 lbs. but my wife says she likes the weight I am now.

I'm about the same size as syncroid (6'1", 200lbs, age 49). I'm looking to get to 190, myself.

Most of these make sense:

The Skinny Rules, by Bob Harper
1. Drink large glass of water (16 oz.) before every meal and snacks--5 a day
2. Don't drink your calories--stay away from fruit juices and sodas that are high in sugar. 2 cups coffee okay
3. Eat lowfat protein at every meal--or 5x a day including snacks. Protein keeps hunger down
4. Slash intake of refined flour/grains--try brown rice, quinoa, barley, farro
5. Eat 30-50 grams of fiber--he lists fiber-rich foods: 1/2C sliced strawberries-9g;1C zucchini-8g;1C spinach-7g
6. Eat apples and berries each day
7. No carbs after lunch--eat lean and green at night. Protein and veggies are best
8. Read labels--stay away from artificial ingredients or foods that sound like bad chemistry experiments
9. Get portion size right--you can bag some portions ahead of time
10. No artificial sweeteners
11. No white potatoes
12. One day a week meatless--eat more beans and nuts
13. No fast foods and fried foods
14. Eat a real breakfast: include protein, grains and fruit
15. Make your own food and eat at least 10 meals a week at home
16. Banish high salt foods--use more herbs
17. Eat veggies--as much as possible
18. Go to bed hungry--try not to eat after 8 p.m. or 4 hours prior to bedtime
19. Sleep Right--get adequate sleep
20. Plan one splurge meal a week--but don't go crazy with the calories, fat and sugar in it

It's all in eating habits and your lifestyle. Back in the day I had to eat 4 times a day to gain weight to make the minimum for Football. Later I realized I was better in other sports.

Let nature catch up....beer was my downfall. Used to suck em down while doing yard work and wrenching. Can't stand the smell anymore. Weight came off easily.

When the back acts up, I don't exercise, the weight goes up.....pretty simple. Only took me 50+ years to figure it out.

I agree. Starbucks is in reality an ice cream parlor. Now they post the calories, it is a real eye opener. Whenever I order a plain iced coffee, they always ask - almost in disbelief - "no sweetener / flavor"? No, thanks - just easy on the ice and leave some room for milk ...

We did the math on 200 calories a day for a light beer or two. Go ahead and do the math on a 600 calorie coffee drink! YIKES!

Well, I burned 5375 calories riding today . . . In theory, if I just did this every day for 10 days, I'd be at my goal weight.

Thank you! That car is a real kick in the pants to drive! Its funny. Driving it to the shop to take the photos, I never even thought of turning on the radio. The sheer sound of the car and raw feel of it was music to my ears. I wish I had the money to buy it myself.

The girls at school used to call me "lucky legs - lucky they don't break" so I always had it in my head that I was skinny. Now I'm just over 6foot and weighing in at 180lbs. I'm happy enough with that weight but my eating like a pig lifestyle in putting it on my waist and nothing looks worse than a tall skinny guy with fat guts.

I think the secret is to avoid carbs. I guy I know was on all sorts of meds including insulin then went on what he calls the cave man diet. Basically it's steak and beans. The pounds have fallen off him. AND he no longer needs any meds. He says his energy levels are way better and feels like a millon bucks.

I suspect he may have had some sort of food intolerance to bread or something and with this out of his diet he's a healthier 50 something guy.

That must have been a long ride! Tell us more! Who counted the calories?

I know guys who go on 2 week bike tour trips with camping gear. They can't eat enough not to lose significant weight. They come back 10+ pounds lighter every time. Same is true for backpacking trips on long distance trails, i.e. pacific crest. I imagine doing this once retired, but in the meantime? I also would think it is a good weight loss program, if you can talk someone into a long distance hike, that is.

See other thread, Seattle To Portland. Calories are off the iPhone bike app, I'm not sure how accurate it is, seems consistent w/ published cal burn figures for cycling at various speeds. No hills of consequence on this ride.
