fat chicks have a place in the universe..
they get to be friends with less than attractive chicks...
cause dudes will go for ugly before fat..
unless very drunk..
then anything that moans will suffice..

OK,

According to the basic BMI I am morbidly obese.

235 pounds
5'11"
38" waist

My ideal weight would be ~160 according to most BMI so I am 75 pounds overweight without taking into account a body fat index.

My Doctor (Wife) wants me to lose 4" in the waste (sic) and drop at least 20 pounds. Worst case she wants me at a 36" waist and 20 pounds lost.

I've always been very active in sports and was lean in my yoot even though I ate lots. Never skinny, but lean. There's a diff.

Bout 20 years ago I climbed off my motorcycle in the desert going about 70 and broke my heal clean off. Didn't realize it wuz broke at the time, just thought it was sprained. Limped around for 6 weeks and my buddies called me a pussy.
it didn't heal right so left leg is way shorter than the right now.

Then it started. A back surgery, a knee surgery, another knee that locks up and needs cortizone on a regular basis.
As the body started breaking down the activity level slowed so for the first time in my life I got what some folks would say is fat. My job has me sitting in as chair most of the time instead of being more active like in years past.
Can't even do three or four good rounds in the ring any more without getting winded or having the knee lock.

The only solution in this sitch is simply to consume less which I'm gradually getting used to, but I like beer and food. Don't drink to excess but a few beers in the evening on occasion is somethnig I don't really care to give up.

I'm 51 and don't give a ratzx arse what anyone else on this planet thinks about my appearance so the whole vanity thing isn't much of a motivator.
I'm not fat enough to be unhealthy so that doesn't work, and I've never been one who is afraid of graduating to the next level anyway so silly death scares don't motivate either.
I'm successful in my career and have been married for 20 years, the shallow insecurity thing doesn't come into play.

I'm not fat enough to prevent me from doing stuff so that isn't an issue, the only thing that's a real negative in my book is being uncomfortable taking my shirt off in public for the first time in my life and I rarely go to the river any more so that doesn't come up often.

Point is this: Don't make a big deal out of something that isn't. And if you can't keep from doing that, ya might want to keep it to your perfect self.

sammy..i agree!! i am 45, and i can still hike up huge mountains looking for cute woodland creatures to kill and eat. if i didnt hunt..i would be a lardass.

i still care how i look, but not enough to really really make a change. i have too many excuses.

i read somewhere that 2 beers a day equals 10 lbs weight gain by the end of a year..not so sure how to verify/confirm. booze calories are brutal. damn..i love beer!

In your forties and fitties, it becomes more about health and quality of life that's left. Extra weight degrades quality.

5' 11" and currently bouncing between 180# and 184#.

Got up to 214# and sedentary, at that weight I had chronic gout with repeated flares, high blood pressure, resting pulse (unmedicated) bear 100 bpm, high total cholesterol and triglycerides and bad LDL, repeated gallstone attacks, a kidney stone attack, and blood sugar was approaching borderline of "pre-diabetic". I was taking about 6 meds daily, 3 for cholesterol, 1 for blood pressure, 2 for gout.

Currently taking no meds, cholesterol is normal, BP normal though not "low" (work stress, plus I suspect I am genetically pre-disposed to higher BP), blood sugar normal, no more gout or gallstone or kidney stone flares, resting pulse about 60 bpm. I had to stop taking the BP med because my resting pulse was getting down to 45-ish bpm and I'd get faint when I stood up; then my doctor said I should taper off the rest of the meds too.

I've been surprised at how much difference losing 30# and riding appx 100 miles/week has made.

Per my body fat, I'm still either on the fat side (25% BF, measured by body composition/impedance meter scale) or getting toward leaner (mid-teens % BF, measured by body fat calipers, but last time was several months ago). I think the difference is visceral fat which is picked up by the scale but not by the calipers. Therefore, I think the 25% is correct, and that seems still significantly too high. Trying to get into the mid-170s #.

My awakening came from a vacation picture that my sis in law took of us. I looked at it and thought, "who is that fat fu*@"...

42 years old, 5' 11" 220 with a 37" waist. Arms the size of a school girl...... Couldn't do 1 single pullup.. Never again....!!

That was 3 years ago, it took me 2 years to get off night/split shifts so that my body could normalize with eating/sleeping habits and such. All my chemical levels were jacked, my thyroid was about dead and I always felt like crap!!!

Now 1 year after making the serious change I am 45 years old, 5'11" 198 with a 31 1/2" waist and working towards 20" arms. I am currently over 175lbs of real body mass/ not fat, and I am in better shape than I have ever been in my whole life!

I also recently started doing Crossfit and it is making a rapid change in my overall fitness level and physic size and shape. Tough as hell but so worth it, the changes are rapid and inspirational.

Less than 45 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week is all it takes for exercise. That is less than 1 dumb show on TV, some pages of a book, a sand-which and beer when you get home....

My eating is ok clean, not super. Doesn't have to be, just pay attention to not eating out so much, cut down on the booze and eat smaller meals more frequently rather than 2 or 3 large ones.

Am am not preaching here, just saying that it can be done and the rewards are great. Really great!! I feel like a million bucks compared to how I felt 1 year ago!!!!

It will help you tremendously with your future in life and even your job performance. BUT most importantly, your health in that future....

If you drink two 12 oz. light beers, that's over 100 cal each. Let's be generous and say your two 12 ouncers have only 200 calories between them:

Calories in Beer, Beer Alcohol, Beer Carbohydrates.

That's an extra 200*365, lets round that to 70000 calories a year. General wisdom says that 3500 calories will put a pound on you, so it is actually 20 pounds you will gain when adding 2 beers to your diet daily without any other changes!

I had lunch last week with a friend who is head of nursing at a Bay Area hospital. They'd just installed overhead patient lifts in a bunch of the rooms. These lift a patient, move him out of the way for bed changes, transfer him between bed and chair, even turn the patient over in bed.

Why did this smallish hospital spend $1MM on this stuff? Because their patients are getting fatter and fatter. It sometimes takes five nurses to lift, roll, move a patient. The average age of his nurses is 50 y/o and as they struggle to lift more 300# pts, the rate of workplace injury is going out of control.

He thinks there should be dedicated facilities for obese patients, that have the equipment and staff necessary to safely handle them, and mandatory, hard-core diet and exercise programs to get their body weight down. You came in for a knee replacement? Welcome to the stalag.

He also thinks there should be no "futile care" provided unless the patient's family produces a credit card. No more spending $100,000 to prolong some 90 y/o's life by a few painful weeks.

knee replacement for tubs are pointless...
they will not do the rehab..
and will gain more weight moaning about not being able to walk..
they haven't walked since kindergarten..
they waddle, have callouses between their thighs..

we had to cath a whale once...
I had one leg on my shoulder..
partner the other...
heave & then the other student crawled up there...

I am at one with my fat...

55yr old, 5'10", 210lbs, 36 waist.

While I was dating (my now wife) I was stressing big time I got down to 180 and 32 waist.

If I could get to 180-175 I'm sure I would feel better (I felt much better when I was at 180)

Yes. Just put the fork down earlier. Have you noticed that fat people all eat salads in public? They must eat pails of food at home.

At 58, I smoke, drink, eat whatever I want & I don't really exercise - other than house stuff. By the BMI, I am slightly overweight but I feel good & the doc says I am healthy (except for the MRI brain scan that is pending but that's another story). I cut breakfast years ago & I don't snack much which keeps the lbs in check. I also occasionally skip meals on the road - I usually return from a week out feeling much thinner.

I've lost 25 lbs with exercise and better eating. Need to loose a few more.

Salads at the restaurant are often high in calories. You have cheese, chips, meat, bacon and ranch dressing added ... a "chef's salad"? LOL!

I see fat people in cars and they are usually always eating. Pay attention to this next time in city traffic. It isn't a gland problem, that's for sure.
