I'm not fat, but I am starting to get a little bit of middle age dickdo.

Ya know, where your belly sticks out further than your dickdo.

Well, forever I was very skinny, 6 Pack, 28" waist, then in my mid 20s,

I was diagnosed with a breathing disorder, and the Docs started pumping me up on steroids, not long after I turned 30, so did my waist..

Funny thing, I have NEVER been one to eat large amounts of anything, and was always active, volleyball, biking, skating, surfing, ect,

but after I turned 40, more LBs started showing, and now, at 6' I'm 240lbs 38" waist I don't Drink anymore (since 08) still don't eat a lot, walk & ride, but am not a little guy
Last week the Doc told me that because of my lack of sleeping & heart issues are the reason for the extra tonnage, so I will keep riding & walking cause I'm not willing to give up yet..

Road bikes- the best thing for us fat old bastards. Easy on knees, ankles and backs. One hour at race pace 20mph burns nearly 1300 calories. Walking, running and swimming dont go anywhere near this. Rowing does. To hold your weight static you need to limit calories to about 1900 per day (IIRC) To lose 2lbs per week, you need to take 1200 cals per day. So, having done an hour on the bike today, Ive got 2500 to splurge. (1200 allowed + 1300 burned). As much Coopers Sparkling Ale and pizza as I like tonight.

Its just an equation. If you eat this, you cant eat that. There is a really neat little phone app called "myfitnesspal" which is really good for this stuff.

Here is a timely questionnaire: Where are you on the global fat scale? from the BBC.

Yep...

Two and 1/2 years ago I finally decided to do something about my naked self in the mirror. I was 48 years old and am 5'11" and weighed 234#. No one thought of me as fat--all of my extra weight (so it seemed) was centered in my belly but I am broad-shouldered and carried it fairly well.

Started going to the gym 5 days a week for weight training. Eliminated fried and processed foods as well as fat-laden goodies, and lost 30# in the first 90 days.

Was doing cardio after weights all five days, then my trainer suggested I reduce that to every other day so as not to lose too much additional weight.

Began running in earnest 6 months ago and now my routine is this:

- Weight training 5 days per week; two muscle groups per day (Push/pull)
- 7 Mile run Mon-weds-fri.
- I try to run a 5k every month and a 10k every other month. I have also now gotten back into biking and running adventure races like Tough Mudder.

It truly is addictive and I have never been a gym guy prior to this. It was all about commitment and once you see the results you simply cannot revert to your old self. Current weight 180# and 12% body fat. 32" waist.

I am one bad-assed 50 year-old if I do say so myself. My 37 year-old wife does not disagree.

I'm 6' and 167. At 48, I have pay more attention to what I eat than I would like but deal with it. My dad had his first heart attack at 55 and bypass surgery a couple of years later. As a kid, it was hard to watch him suffer and I vowed to never put myself or my family through the same.

+1 here!

It was heart breaking to look into my Dads eyes before going into the operating room and watching him say a possible good bye to my Mom.

If eating right and watching my weight will help keep me off the table it will be worth it!!

I’m back to being heavier than I want to be. I’m about 175 and 5’9”.

For most of my life I never needed to worry about my weight. I was usually active enough to stay in better than average shape. Then kids happened and work got busy. I would exercise for a few weeks and then get busy and quit. This happened for several years and in 2007, a combination of pants being snug and seeing 175 on the scale was enough motivation to get serious. Plus, the BMI said I was overweight and while I know that is not perfect if was enough to get me going. I was fortunate to have a small gym with shower in my office suite (I know, no excuse before).

I changed my diet during the week, and ate whatever I wanted during weekend. Most of the changes were to breakfast and lunch since my wife didn’t change what she cooked, but it was mostly healthy anyway. I did cut down on portion size. Lunch was changed to salad with a lot of different vegetables. Also changed snacks to fruits and veggies from crackers and ice cream and such. To help with cutting calories and increasing protein (wanted to build muscle – see next paragraph) I think I used this website, Nutrition facts, calories in food, labels, nutritional information and analysis – NutritionData.com. I don’t remember it being associated with Self magazine, but maybe they bought it over the last five years.

For the exercise component I found a website that talked about High Intensity Interval Training. It said that a 25 minute workout would be better than longer cardio workouts. I liked the sound of that I used the stationary bike and started doing just 7 minutes and gradually increased to 30 minutes. I cannot remember how long it took to get to the full workout. I only did this 2-3 times per week. I think it was twice (Tuesday/Thursday) with a 5 mile run on the weekend. I also did free weights and found the program from Mark Rippetoe’s book Starting Strength. I never bought the book, but found the enough information on the web to put together a plan. I loved this plan and it’s great for beginners. Only three exercise every other day (Monday/Wednesday/Friday). I think after a year a new plan would be needed, maybe 6 months. I did have to bastardize it due to my limited equipment (only dumbbells up to 50 lbs.). My plan was to join a gym the second year, once I reached that limitation.

I kept notes on my weight and % body fat, but cannot find the file. I think I lost just over 20 lbs, but lost more fat and put on a little muscle.

Unfortunately, 2008 was very busy including me changing jobs and moving. I never got back into it. Fell back into the routine of running 3 days a week for 2-3 weeks and quitting. I’m now back to 175, I don’t feel fat, but the BMI calculation disagrees. I know I don’t feel as good as I used to and get winded easier. Coincidently, I exercised this morning for the first time this year. Hopefully, this thread helps keep the motivation. I was going to join the weight loss challenge, but didn’t for no reason except for the reason I got back to this situation – laziness.

Ya know fat people used to be cool... because it meant you had enough money to buy lots of food and not have to work hard (in some third world countries this is still true).

Just sayin

At the gym most days. Bike, try to swim every week or so... it's a struggle. I can feel a major metabolism slow down and I'm still hanging on to mid 30's. In the pool last night it felt like some one was holding me down.

Frustrating

6' tall and 180 lbs., just turned 53 y.o. When I was young, (20s/30s), I weighed about 160 on the same frame. I'd like to drop about 5-10 lbs. but it's not easy. I like to eat and don't exercise enough.

I think that the people who claim genetics and the people who say that it's all diet are both partly right. One's diet absolutely affects weight, and other health areas, but genetics are huge in determining body type. I eat like a pig at times, and always too many bad calories compared to caloric output. If I had a different metabolism, I'd weight 260 lbs. Guaranteed. Steak, potatoes, ice cream, more meat and bread, you name it. I never get above 180 no matter what. My Dad was never overweight, even when he drank a quart of Scotch every day. When he got married at 25, he was ex-military and had a 29" waist and a 16.5" neck. I have the same physique but eat a hell of a lot more than he did.

For that reason, I have a lot of sympathy and even empathy for overweight people. I would be quite fat if I had different genetics. That said, people who are overweight really need to figure it out and get slim if they care at all about their health. The human body is an amazing thing and can take a lot of abuse, (how much depends on genetics, again), but eventually it will say *FAH Q* and leave you on the side of the road holding your AAA card, so to speak. Whether it's cigarettes or bacon, eventually you pay the piper.

Genetics and body type are a hand we are dealt. Can't do a thing about it, just need to play the hand you're dealt as smart as possible. I feel so sorry for people who need to diet and exercise every day of their life to avoid obesity, it would nearly kill me to not eat what I want. But compared to carrying around an extra 50 lbs., which is like carrying 4 huge bags of groceries with you everywhere you go, everyday of your life, I'd figure something out.

Lastly, if you are putting 250+ lbs. in the drivers seat of a 911, you are not having the same driving experience as the rest of us. Same with riding a MC, being on a sailboat or small powerboat, etc. You are balast, and not in a small way.

Thanks imcarthur for the BMI.

I am 63, 6' last weight in 176 lb puts me at 24 BMI.

Still have that pinch cuz my muscle tone has turned to slop, if I could get ambitious and lift some weights and ride 100 miles a week could get to 170 with no pinch in short order.
