Winchester, 1300 Defender with pistol grip, here.
Ruger, Super Blackhawk 44 magnum, here too.

Those 2 should keep you covered. The Super Blackhawk is a lot of fun. It is huge.

My wife loves shooting this thing, then again she likes to shoot and has her own firearms, but you answer your question yes, you can always use light loads. Like 8's will send a nice wall of shot through a doorway. But you may have to shoot someone a few times with those to kill them.

I use a Mossberg 500 for home defense. When I bought it, I kept the pistol grip and retractable stock on it. It looked cool, but I could not hit the broad side of a barn with it that way. I put a full stock on it, an kept the short barrel (I have a long barrel as well). I also use it with the full military style stock. I shoot well that way.

As far as the .44 I like the SW 629. I have had this spoon for years, and it has never failed. It came with fancy wooden grips. They look great, but the Pachmayr grips are much better for use.

Keep the regular stock. Even a kid (he was 14) can shoot slugs through it.

Hard to go wrong with a 629, I think. Might as well get a long barrel if it's not a carry gun, IMO. I shot an early 29 (countersunk etc) a while back, stock wood grips and all, and was stunned at how mild it was to shoot. Crazy accurate, too.

I would not get a pistol grip even for big man. Only way to shoot it well is off the hip, sort of resting it against the body. It is tough to aim that way. If a small woman (aka wife) needs to use the gun, just use low brass large pellet bird shot. You could also buy a 20 gauge - it does the job just as well, has less recoil and you can hump the hills with it better (lighter) when you come valley quail hunting with the longer barrel!

Go with the 500 or 870. In all my military and leo years, I never had on jam or miss fire on me. I have also owned both personally as well. Once you are familiar with them, you could load them blindfolded in the dark. I would only use brand new ammo (NO RELOADS) for home defense. This should lessen any possibilities of a malfunction. Saiga is making a Kalashnikov actioned 12ga now that takes a clip, but I cannot vouch for their dependability. If they are as dependable as their AK cousins, they may be something to consider... just my .02 good luck on the search!

Avoid the pistol grip only. Hard to keep it braced while reloading in a scrape. You want to keep the threat addressed at all times. Get a forearm bandolier for easy reloading. Running out of ammo is the shotgun's weakness.

I've always wanted a Model 97 to be able to rack 'em out Chuck Connor style while holding trigger down. I heard some police have their 870s modded like this and would like to be able to do it to mine if possible.

Agree on pistol grip. And you guys are going way too macho. Get a 870 youth deer model in 20 ga. With the 20 inch deer barell. In mossyt oak pink. If 5 20 ga oo bucks in 3 inch aren't enuff, the perp will be distracted by the color when you're beating him over the head with it.

And the missus won't be afraid to learn how to use it.....

63 Year Old Cancer Patient Uses Double Barreled Shotgun to Capture 2 Burglars
2012 SEPTEMBER 24
state: MI

A 63 year old Michigan man, with stage 4 lymphoma (currently in remission) kept his nerves steady when two young men broke into his home around noon.

The homeowner heard the pair breaking in and grabbed his shotgun. He met them at the top of the second story stairs and held them at gunpoint until police arrived.

“I really tried to be as forceful as possible,” Smith said. “I didn’t want them to get me into a conversation. You can’t let them get too close to where they can grab the gun.”

It appears the homeowner and his wife knew one of the would be burglars and had tried to help him out periodically over the years.

Both suspects are being held on felony charges.
Not a good picture of either of us..

I was so focused on Dueller getting all the babes that I counted your ladies to his score (when you posted in his online dating thread)! Shows you how much attention I pay - LOL!

I really like my 1300. I've got a 28" barrel with interchangeable "Winchokes" for anything from quail to turkeys, a 20" rifled slug barrel for deer hunting in shotgun only areas, and an 18" "home defense" kind of barrel. I actually prefer the Winchester over the ubiquitous Remington 870, but that's just me. You really can't go wrong with either one.

I love my Blackhawks and Super Blackhawks, too. They don't have to be huge, though. How about a 3 1/2" barreled Super in .44 mag for a little fistful of fun:

I have both a retired LEO Rem 870 that I painted with Duracoat urban camo, and a Winchster 1300 with a pistol grip and a folding stock.

Both work just fine.

Don't spend lots of $$ on it...

The judge is a gimmick IMHO. It isn't as good as a revolver and not as good as a shotgun. I also do not think it is legal in the PRK.
