This is exactly it, the bike is special to him particularly since the manufacturer is no longer in business. I will advise him to find a reputable (hopefully local) frame straightener.

Thanks all.

You know, Paul Brodie did that exact repair on YT. Your buddy ought to watch that just to be informed. Squaring up the bottom bracket was really well detailed.

Update on my chainsucked damaged carbon fiber diverge:

This certainly looked like chainsuck, but had just enough going on to make me wonder if I'd started a stress fracture.

Anyhow- Look what came in the mail today!

I got a screaming deal on some carbon fiber. And the owner swears by it.

Second- This got me sanding the frame. I don't think there's any deep cracks/damage. (good news) I will sand some more paint/ filler off the periphery and will get to carbon fibering for bonding. it is interesting to see the different directions/ and filler used on a CF frame. I will overbuild this area, as it will eventually have more chain encounters.

more pics to come-assuming the repair looks good. If not, then no pics.

Apologies if a repeat. Either way, pretty cool!

Carbon Fiber update 7/20/23.
Carbon on. This stuff lays finicky as all getout. Not as sexy as I intended with carbon fiber weave orientation, but I realized this is tricky territory. The CF immediately starts to separate. Needs to be canted against itself for strength and not to fall apart on the spot. I am not a carbon fiber expert. This does not behave like your father's fiberglass. I am abandoning any future submarine projects. I should have watched youtube videos before starting. I should have had a way to compress the CF against the frame. But- this is not really structural, it's more protection. Assuming the epoxy dries (it's slowly getting tacky- so hopeful...) I will sand this flush and be done with it. It does barely pass muster with my "looks good enough to post to ppot" criteria, although I am not happy with the lay of the weave across the bb. At that point, it was a matter of survival, not being sexy. I do think the final sanded portion will provide some meat for future chain drops and give me confidence to bomb doubletrack. That's about 3 layers thick at the areas trashed by chainsuck.

26 inch canti- to- 700c v-brake- boss replositioning- to -disc brake reassignement surgery complete(ish'ed). My trash can bike now identifies as a disc brake bike. Will fill in some gaps and sand out, but overall- success. Big grins on first time out. The brazing is ugly. (fugly- really) I and brazing with a smalll welding tip, not enough heat to evenly heat the area and just let the brazing flow. Also, I did not want to overheat the drive side leather chainstay protector- but even with heat shielding, that was a concern. That said- today was about caliper mount alignment, and not loosening the left rear dropout. Success! Crappy brazing I can grind off and add too. Caliper alignment was perfectissimo!!!! I think I might just leave this in clear coat as the brown burn marks accent the rustoleum frame color
(which I "thought" as a homage to porsche 911 sand beige, but perhaps maybe light ivory, or ivory...either way- a 911 frame color reference).

Garage
I had the distinct pleasure of accidentally meeting “look171” on Thursday in Las Vegas.

I was hanging out in a booth of a company that I work with at the AWFS (Association of Woodworking and Finishing Suppliers) show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. I happened to be wearing a Campagnolo t-shirt and he came up to me and commented on my shaved legs and how I must be a cyclist- honestly it was not weird... got to talking and because I’m obsessed with waxed chains, I brought that up and he put two and two together and asked if I had a Porsche and bingo we made a Pelican connection.

Unfortunately I was leaving for the airport in a couple of hours, so we weren’t able to hang out.

Great guy and it was a pleasure to meet him.

Nice meeting you, now get on your bike!

To compress the cf, lay it on and while wet wrap the area as tightly as possible with blue masking tape. Really. It'll provide compression and comes off easily, more or less, after the resin cures.

Thanks Greg!
I was also watching some videos on using heat shrink tape. In the end, I wussed out because I was having a hard enough time aligning the cf over the convex shapes of the bb, and, after all, I was really looking for sacrificial layer to protect the factory weave- but next time, I'm going to spend more time looking into compressing the patch. I did sand it out and it looked semi good, and left it naked, shot a layer of clear, mounted the cranks and motored on. Will be hitting "lost river" gravel ride next weekend in WV.

Went for a nice ride today. 99 degrees hot. FACTOID- Not so hot when you don't take any data devices with a thermometer to psyche you out! Take a crapload of water and ignore any thermometers.

Hey Byron, when I see this 82' Bandito frame I think of you- check out the dual rear dropouts. I'm liking the comp II's myself! Lot's of goodness here!

I'm guessing but that looks like self-amalgamating tape (typically silicone based).

Naturally, it would have to be a very high caliber tape to harness the power of those clipless pedals!

Random (when grams don't matter) gratuitous leather pic- Recovered the seat, wrapped the grips- BUT- slowly replacing the brake line holders from zip ties to leather. Front- leather cord- rear- leather excess from seat recover. More HF zip ties to be cut coming soon.....
