are YOU going to Porsche HELL?

I probably am

repent, repent before it's too late because Ragnarok is coming

confess your Porsche sins here

so I'll go first

I'm a cheapskate

I own old Porsches that other people no longer want or are willing to spend the time to fix and I just can't convince myself to fork out the dinero for any new car (but I'm getting close because a 944 can be challenging to keep on the road)

so I cut corners that I judge to be acceptable

I paint my phone dials flat black with a rattle can, it doesn't look as good as powdercoat but its a huge improvement over what they looked like when I got the car, and I can do the job in an afternoon for the price of two cans of Krylon flat black, and I can touch them up at any time

I have a lot of skeletons in this closet

here is another one;

I used vinyl tubing from the local hardware store to replace the old blue tube that connects the brake resivoir to the clutch master cylinder

I finally found a place that sold that tubing (pelican may have it too) but I would have had to wait another week to get it and that would mean I would have to drive my Suburban to work for another week (600 miles a week avg commuting)

I keep an eye on that tubing and its been almost a year now and its still working

Kill yourself if you like, but I don't think thats right. Vinyl tube gives when your trying to brake for a school bus, and.........?

I'm all for punk rock P-cars with rattle can paint jobs, but you can still do that safely.

I picked up a black replacement hood for my silver 911/Targa, been thinking matte black hood and painting the phone dials as you have.

err...

ok, the 944 has one resivoir for the brake and clutch system

the tube in question goes to the clutch master cylinder and the only pressure it is exposed to is atmospheric

I keep an eye on that tube. I may be a little harder than it was when I installed it but it's still functioning, and it's not changing color or getting cloudy so there is no chemical interaction with the vinyl and the break fluid

You can't "short cut" anything on a Porsche IMHO.

Otherwise what's the point of owning such a car? There are lots of cheaper cars you can play with.

the point of owning a Porsche is to enjoy driving it, not to follow some dogmatic maintenance routine

we can't escape compromise because everything in life is a balancing act

yes, you most certainly are going to Hell

the disc can be forgiven but parting out a near mint Turbo will get your head on a pike decorating Odin's pool hall

here is another one

when I bought my 911 the airbox straps were shot

two new straps would run about $50 with shipping

I didn't want to spend money on something the would just rot out again in a few years so I went to the hardware store and bought two 6" long and about .5" dia tension springs and four key chain rings and made two steel straps that I'll never have to replace. They're on the car right now as good as when I put them on 8 years ago. I think I spent less than $4

(mods: please don't ban me for posting this alternate fix, hehe, I did spend a nice grand when I did my clutch on my 944, and the clutch is still working perfectly )

Porsche hell is when you pay someone thousands of dollars to do something you could have done better yourself, and they manage to NOT fix the problem.

While keeping your car for six months...

You are not there yet.

Otto

Really? ... I drive my 78SC 4 or 5 times a week.

Edit: I've always done my own maintenance and repairs.

I have a confession as well...I haven't fixed my hood lift...its been several years now and when I open my hood I have to keep it propped open with...gasp...the spare tire! Oh the angst and shame I feel. To that point I have found myself only opening the hood late at night when the streets are empty and the children are in bed. I know there are support groups and the fix is only a mouse click and a credit card number away but I just can't get there yet without help...help me oh Lawd! Hap dis po lazy fool change his a ways!!!

I guess I made the informed decision to own and daily drive a Porsche, so therefore I will try to give the car everything it needs to function not only properly, but splendidly. I could save a few bucks using a Fram oil filter, and sam's oil, but I choose Mahle filters with Brad Penn oil because it does the job better.

I don't think I will compromise on engine hoses or other operating systems components, and my other driver is similar to yours.....an F-250 diesel 4x4. When I get in my car, I don't want to worry about checking on my quik fixes to see if they will survive the commute, and if you are driving 600 miles a week, you shouldn't be cutting corners either.

Porsche hell is putting your P car away for six months, ie. the winter. Enjoy your P car year round so as to avoid Porsche withdrawal. So far deferred items include inoperative spoiler(previous owner did not fix it). I don't go fast enough for it to be scary. Really Porsche hell is attempting to sell a really neglected Porsche to an unsuspecting buyer who does not know what a really bad case of Porsche hell maintenance is. Is there an app for this?

Sure about that? What if the tube lets go right at the MC junction point? Then you have ONE pump on the brakes and you are done...

This is not a good place to save $$$ on a car. Safety items need to be 100% ALWAYS. Scrimp on the paint on your wheels but not this...

The tube between the MC reservoir and the clutch MC failing would have no effect on braking whatsoever. Anyone who thinks differently does not understand how the system works.
