Is there traffic in the midwest?

Not a fan of the tip either but its hard to argue with the slushbox if you have to commute in anythink like DC traffic. At least its not a cvt.

It was $4k + shipping and three weeks downtime. I think you may be thinking of that 2nd gear detent update you can do for around $200. That doesn't really fix the problem. The issue is a tolerance problem on the second gear syncro.

I needed new syncros on just about every gear, and Eric at g-box had to machine the second gear syncro in a special way as to allow the dogs to engage differently. It was a very involved process, but the problem is gone.

This is the correct answer. One side benefit of the Tip is that you will not have over-revs which are quite common with 6-speeds - especially if random shoppers do "test drives." My TT is a 6-speed, but if my car had been a Tip and was otherwise identical, I'd have bought it.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I've had seven 996/986 with original transmissions and between 60k and 135k. I believe the detent is more preventative, and I don't think having to replace every syncro is typical. But it sucks if it happens to you. I know a guy locally that's looking at a transmission rebuild on a 40k mile 2008 997S.

Still, it's better than a slushbox.

Tip turbos are faster. There are a few upgrades that can be done to have them shoft more crisp, faster and handle more torque. I am not an automatic transmission person in general, especially on sports cars but 996tt with a tip is actually a delight to drive.

I LOLed, not a chance at me letting an SC go for that, but did offer him a 914 project. The 996 would be fun with an LS1 in it.

You can backdate that 81, put in a 993 3.6 variorum junk yard motor, paint it Tangerine or Viper green and sell it for $100,000!

I have owned a boxster s and 99 996 tiptronics... Not as much fun to drive as my stick shift cars...

I am in the market for another 996, as my wife wants one. It will be a tiptronic again. This way, everyone in the family can drive it... Also, a manual in traffic, is a pain.

If the car is going to be your only "fun" car, then get the manual. If you already have cars that are manual, get the tiptronic...

I know many believe that a tip is slower than a manual... I doubt it. On a road course perhaps 10% of real world drivers with be faster with a maunal. 90% faster with a tiptronic.

My turbo is a manual, I did not even look at the tip's. They are cheaper though.

I am also seeing the 996TT prices creeping up a little so get it now!

Funny thing, all my water cooled Porsches have been Tips. My 2008 Tip S shifts faster than the 2002 Tip S. Both are great cars for a DD, but would be more fun with a stick. My turbo is modded and with the Tip, I don't have to worry about over revs, unlike my 930.
