I tried to watch it last night....was flipping channels and saw the name, recognized it from this thread and tuned in. Not sure what episode I was watching but they were trucking it to GITMO and had already commandeered some contaminated fuel from another ship??? Any way....I couldn't get into it at all.

The contaminated fuel is not much of a big deal. If you have even been inside a naval vessel fuel tank you would know. Ships have fuel oil purifiers, the fuel tanks are compensated with sea water as normal practice (helps with stability).

The shot of the 5" gun loading was kinda cool. 20 years of shooting those things and tearing them apart for cleaning etc. and I never got a view of a round loading into the chamber. Thats how I pictured it looking. GOPRO cameras have changed the world. My guns were never that dirty BTW.

Yea the fuse in the load center was probably not included in the operation manuals used by the crew. What we didn't see was were the turbine generators still running? and the Switch boards not closing the circuit. vital Shipsystems would have been running on UPS.

So you were a FC and a GM? Whenever I shot anything on board ship, the GM's where there to clean up.

I watched the first two episodes so far. They actually showed my gear I used to work on, all though they made it look like communication gear instead of a fire control illuminator. Never seen so many crisp clean uniforms and such motivation 100% of the time on board ship.

I believe the gas turbine ships use JP5 which is a type of jet fuel. Most steam turbine and diesel ships use F76 diesel.

That said my Surface Warfare qual is many years old and I don't remember as much as I should....

On the Aegis Class Cruisers I embarked on, the gas turbine engines were essentially C-5 jet engines in a box. Same with the Frigates I cruised on.

They ran on JP-5, just like the jet engines on my helo.

The show is a bit melodramatic, but it is fun to watch

I qual'ed as an OOD underway...even had my own watch section when I was an Airboss on a STEAM driven ship!

Based on the book... same name, by Brinkley, that I read about 30 years ago and again 10 years ago (still have it). Excellent. Light years better than this show.

Series is only loosely based on the book, which is the end of a nuclear war...

Similarities to book / movie "On the Beach".

4 LM2500's running on DFM or diesel fuel marine. What cruisers did you embark on? I was on board the USS Chosin for 5 years out of Pearl Harbor.

I was stationed on the USS Somers DDG-34 out of Pearl Harbor as an FTM1(SW), then to shore duty as an FCC leading Aegis training in Moorestown, NJ, then PRECOM as an FCCS(SW) on the Bunker Hill in Pascagula, MS. My dubious claim to fame is that I was the training manager who trained the USS Vincennes CG-49 CIC crew...

I thought JP...thanks for the correction. The engineering spaces on the Aegis ships were fascinating. When I wasn't flying I really enjoyed spending time below decks.

Plank owner on CG-50, the Valley Forge. Picked her up in Pascagoula. My squadron, HSL-43 was the first SH-60B west coast squadron.

I also did a lot of pre cruise work ups on the Vincennes...like mreid, I spent a lot of time with the Vincennes since I had done the first escorts of the re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers on FFG-37 during Ernest Will, where the Vincennes was headed.

Landed on the Bunker Hill. Don't remember staying!

I met Captain Rogers a number of times during work ups and an additional five day exercise off SoCal.

I was a GMCS when I retired. Qualified as Conning officer on Vincennes and also as CSC in Combat Information Center. I few of my guys qualed on Mk86 operation ans actually can say they SHOT the gun.
Yep DFM for Fuel on all gas turbine ships. Jets pushing ships can run on just about anything. JP-4, JP-5 No.2 diesel, DFM. Helicopters only got JP-5 well because falling in the drink was not a good day.

Yea I caught the SPG-62 movement preceding coms message. I LOLed.
Also I am not sure Scott air pac would be the best choice for a shore detail. Better with CBR suit and gas mask. Hmm have to think about that one.

I did a tour at CSEDS in Moorestown, NJ. My LCPO on the Chosin was on the Vincennes during the incident with the airbus. He was sitting RSC if I remember correctly. I got out as a FC1(SW) and would be retiring next year. Wish I was still in.

I was on the tender Emory S Land for two years. Cool thing about being on a tender is that I got onboard just about every ship and sub class when they pulled alongside for service. I have a stack of coins and ball caps a mile high... I tried to get one for every tended unit that tied on our side, got a couple British ones too. Got to tour the Charles De Gaule (France) too. Got out of the Navy at 10 years. Tried to stay in the reserves for one year but it wasn't for me. Don't regret it at all. Navy was a fun ride but it was time to move on. Got selected for CDR just before I left the reserves but it wasn't enough to make me stay.

Was talking to a friend, according to him the show has the same advisors as lone survivor, seal 6 team, and the hurt locker plus a couple of ex navy guys. All high end retired brass.

Show was screened in DC for all joint chiefs and it had a huge reception.

Don't know anything about the navy but I think that they are trying to get it close to right.

Really? I promise you getting the propellor to turn while the ship is moving forward is possible. Doing it with 3 parachutes? probably not. using the energy of the turning propulsion shaft to somehow go through the GTM to make electricity? No way. GTG is not electrically connected to the GTM.

The 5" gun shooting at the RHIB an knocking the peoples out. Um no. They said HE-PD round which does not make white column of water splash. and if it is close enough to blast them out of the boat then they would also be full of 1/2" holes.

Why ruin beer to distill into water when they are sitting in the Ocean. salt water is easier to distill than beer. Even if it is crappy silver bullet.
