I had a 1986.5 Supra non-turbo. 200hp, 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. It was a monster...

Except that's utter BS. The Supra was quite handler of the crop of Japanese muscle. And outhandled Porsche's 911 Turbo and Ferraris frequently in tests. Mustangs and Corvettes of the day did no such thing. It hustled around a track quicker than the RX-7. And by "track" I mean road course. Here's a few pics to enlighten you. Of course it was faster than an rx7 around a road course, it was significantly more powerful. I just think the rx7 was the cooler car. It was the best handling car of the day and dominated scca stock autocross, which is more rewarding of handling and nimbleness.

also as im sure you are aware skidpad, stopping distance, and slalom magazine tests are more indicative of tires than car
an aveo with hoosiers would cream any of those

I've had the luxury of driving a not all that impressive mkIV Supra ('95 NA with a single turbo kit, was just under 400whp at horsepower freaks). Wasn't my car, so I didn't exactly flog it, but got enough to know it was a beast. That long hood look isn't just a look - it's a massive car. Yes, a Supra TT would draw more looks at a parking lot than a 996 TT. But so would Betty White nude and on fire - doesn't mean I'd rather have that. And while I have been in the P-Car community my whole life, I'm not exactly a fanboi. I would take a Exige over a Cayman S all day long. And a S2000 over a comparably priced Boxter. Even - wait for it - a Corvette over a base Carrera. Who's the jaded one? |

Yep, a Supra is 1.75" longer than a new 911. Truly massive.
![]() And an NA-T Supra single with 400HP isn't a well running Supra. My Supra made 403 RWHP...on stock twins.

Isn't it? Don't forget 4" longer wheelbase. Comparing it to another big car and proving the Supra is bigger does nothing for your point.
Consider that for it's time it was more like 10" longer (overall and wheelbase) and more than 100lbs heavier than a 993 turbo - which was AWD. Quote:
I really don't have a problem with the Supra. I would even own one at some point, it would just be a bit farther down my list than yours. It takes all kinds, and I'm glad you like the 'yota (if we all liked the exact same thing to the same proportion life would be pretty boring, wouldn't it). |

I got some nookie in mine!
![]() '88, non turbo, with spoiler and sport roof*. First car I took a loan out on. I was about 19 at the time. Best driving car I ever had (with the roof in place) until I bought that 928. *This is key to being 6'5", and getting laid in a MkIII Supra

So was the Supra beyond impressive or was the 911 weak sauce?

I would also rate the 991 as "huge".

964 was a bit archic for the time and on its way out, the supra was a bit ahead of its time.
I thought you guys were discussing the size though? Yes the 991 is huge, I am suprised the supra is even bigger. There are alot of fun suprises in those rag snipits: The zr1 could only manage a 13.6? Supras got into the 50ks by the end of their lifecycle. The poor lotus esprit is unreliable and slow, but I still want one. Supra came with pretty fantastic tires stock apparently.

Funny you mention that. When I put modern tires on it, the performance sky rocketed. I'm guessing you're tech had increased significantly since the mid 90s

If it pulled .98 gs on street tires in the early 90s it had state of the art tires. You can only do marginally better with current non rcompound street tires.
Skidpad is almost exclusively a test of tires

![]() ![]() ![]() Been tasked with a Supra rescue. 63K mile 6spd TT. Maybe the last unmodified Supe that’s in driver condition. Wing was in the hatch. Last ran 2008. Got the tank all drained, lines blown out, freed up the stuck fuel pump and new filters and fluids. But to be expected, the injectors are varnished stuck. Another weekend for that along with tires and brakes. Will possibly BAT this one whenever a new Supra comes along (don’t hold your breath!)

Bought a new '87 Supra Turbo back then....put 100k smiles on her...simply awesome for back then, tame by today's cars. I did things in that Supra that I would not even attempt in my '88 911 since I don't have the aero bits. My 911 feels lightweight and nimble, by comparison, but with "me" behind the wheel, the Supra was easier to push to the limits...I had it @ 140 once....10K below redline still, and man that car was PLANTED on the blacktop. A heavier car, but in 2nd and 3rd gear with the turbo boost kicking in....a total hoot
