I have a fairly wide selection of spoonage, old and new.
I bought a Ruger New Vacarro in Colt .45 years ago based on recommendations here. I was looking for a shooter and a home defense weapon in single action. A few thousand rounds later, it remains my favorite range pistol and still rests bedside. Again, it is an honest shooter not an heirloom. The only time I have had a "failure to feed" is when I run out of ammunition at the range

Needing a handy carry piece, I picked up one of these a few weeks ago. Smith 442. .38 Aluminum frame "airweight." Hammerless. I LOVE this little thing.

I have this also, Smith & Wesson 340PD Air Lite Sc, 357 Mag, 1 7/8", Scandium. VERY light. Hard on the web of the hand with full load .357 but packs a punch.

Those little Smiths are very nice, but man the trigger is great on Ruger's LCR. That said, I would NOT recommend anything under 3" for a first revolver (actually 4" is probably as short as you should go first). Those shorties take lots of practice, especially DAO. A 4" .357 is about as flexible a handgun as one could choose, a nice heavy one like a Ruger GP 100 or L frame Smith (586/686) either blued or stainless, and a Simply Rugged holster with the IWB straps and a good belt is probably what I'd suggest for shooting, home defense and possibly carrying. To conceal, you'd need to dress very intentionally, but it could be done. It'll be more accurate than the shooter, and will run for generations on anything from light .38's to full house .357's.

I have a S&W Model 28-2. Great shooter and smooth as butter action on it.
I would not go with a Single Six unless there is a reason you want to go sao. You will spend more time loading and unloading the thing. Neither kid of mine will shoot our single six. They love the High Standard Double Nine though! Shown here next to the Single Six.

He is not looking for a carry weapon though. Given a choice between shooting my .38 and my brother's .357, it is no contest, .38 never would get out of the bag. Other brother has a .22 Colt Diamondback. Baby Python, but it needs some work to get the trigger as nice as a Python. 4" barrel, great little shooter.

Not anymore you don't..not a NIB gun.
Get an older 686 and be done with it...and get an older 6 shooter without the fking lock...they are around virtually NIB.

I have a newer model 686 stainless steel holds 7 rounds of .357/38 special it is a TALO edition very very nice. I also have a nickle plated ( ? ) 32 cal. S&W that is a hoot to fire, very lightweight and 32 long has enough power to drop someone if you had to . Best advice I can give you is first go to a local gun show if possible, you will see a huge variety that you can hold in your hand and get a feel for. Unless you find a diamond in the rough I wouldn't buy just yet. Find 2 , 3 , 4 models that you like and then go to your local range/gun shop. There you can fire the guns and REALLY narrow down what you like . Be safe and have fun !

We've had this discussion before
. If I were the OP, I would absolutely shoot that Python before passing it on to his son, so the boy wouldn't have any qualms about using it as it was intended, and not view it in terms of $. I'm not like you...I had no idea my Diamondback (virtually like new) was worth more than I imagined until you told me some years back....but would I rather have never enjoyed it (NIB) and had a few grand in my pocket...no. Many folks have driven a new car off the lot and taken a similar "hit" by the time they got home...I just don't care about $ in some instances...that Python would be one ![]() Shoot the damn thing...it's only $.... The next wheelie on my list is a Smith 25-2. I used to own one ... sold it in a moment of stupidity ... miss it terribly. .45 ACP is a joy to shoot. Recoil is mild, it makes big ol' holes in things, and reloads are super-fast using full moon clips. And the best part is that the polymer EZ Moon clips are effortless to load/unload.
Let's be honest...they don't get much prettier than this:

I have a 25-5 with an 8 3/8" barrel in .45 Colt. It is a nice wheel gun but the 28-2 is more fun. I carry the 25-5 in the brush when driving deer.
They are pretty, but the grips are a little big for small hands.

Beautiful - just gotta love the old Smiths.
I get kinda quirky about a few things (as many of you may have noticed). One of my weirder quirks is the whole .44 vs. .45 thing. To me, .44's - Special or Magnum - are S&W's, where .45's - ACP or Long Colt - are Colts. I've never had a .45 caliber S&W, nor a .44 caliber Colt. I have Rugers in both, but there really are no "traditional" Ruger calibers. Just one of those things. Here's my only N frame for the moment (in .44 mag, of course). I'm not sure it's long for my possession - it's not really "me", with its 6" barrel and nickel finish. I want to turn it into a blued 4" someday...

![]() They make a really short version of the double action Redhawks as well. It even comes in .454 Casull and .480 Ruger, if you can actually hang on to such a beast.
