jack points on 911

i looked through previous posts just got more confused when i was a kid i used to work at a porsche dealer (lot boy) anyways they always just had small blocks of wood and lifted or jacked the car from the four corners of the pan i even think i once saw them jack the back of one using a block of wood on the sump plate i would think that using the jack point under the sills would just cause more rust problems in a already rust prone area?

Check your manual, exact lift points are given. I think it's one of the pages at the back.

This applies to all cars. Where the manuals tell you to jack the car up by, is also where you are supposed to put the jackstands. Can't do both. For the 911, I use the factory jakc point, then place jackstands in the proper places.

I hate to say this but ... the button is your friend. There have been numerous posts on this topic. The best is by Bill Verburg who has a picture of the bottom of the car with both the jacking and support points marked. Tell us what you find.

The problem is that unique or even emergency posts get pushed down by new posts. When those new posts are on things that have been answered literally hundreds of time before, people are less likely to re-re-...answer.

The search button at the bottom RH side of the screen is the best one to use.

tonypeoni,

Sorry you feel that way. Please do note that not only did I tell to to use the search button but also gave you a bit of information on what you needed to find. Did you find Bill's post? Did it not answer your question?

Tony: the truth is that the search button is your friend. You will find a TON of info that will help you (now and in the future). I spent a month "going to school" using the search button.

To get both rear wheels off the ground, I usually lift one side at a time using the factory jack point, and then using a jackstand under the torsion bar cover.

But others have been using the sump plate for years without any negative effects.

As long as you don't lift on the sheet metal pan, you're probably okay.

tonypeoni: It helps to state what year/type your car is because the sump plate was modified over the years.
That said, I think it is not very smart to use the sump plate for jacking.
Go just slightly ahead (towards the clutch) on the engine seam with a wooden block, or a hockey puck.
Regarding search: A lot of people take the short-cut of letting other people do the search.
Use the "Search" button, all the info is there.

Also, since several seem to be critiquing your posts, you may want to try using a little punctuation. Periods, commas, etc.

Not trying to slam you but your original post was a little difficult to understand. Had to read through it a few times to finally understand what you were saying/asking.

There are loads of people on this BBS who love to help fellow Porsche owners, but if they can't understand the question, chances are they'll move on to another.

Just my own $.02.

Oh, as far as the jacking points, definitely do the search thing for the Bill Verberg post. He provided a photo of the under-side of the car with all of the jacking and support locations clearly identified.

Good luck!

Randy

No comment on your last post.

Get yourself a jack pad from our host. I use it all the time. I lift one side then put a jack stand under the torsion bar covers; then do the other side. The nice thing about the jack pad is it's ease of use. I'll lift the car just to have a look at stuff in order to familiarize myself with the car; you might say "just for the fun of it". And, as the others have mentioned; the search button. I've learnt a ton about my car by spending hours reading old posts. Of course this is where I might run out and lift the car to get an eyeball on what I may have just read about. My P-car insurance ran out two weeks ago but the fun doesnt' end when you can't drive it. I'm doing a valve adjustment this week end and will continue to putter with the car until I dicide to put it back on the road. This is the other half of the fun in ownership of these cars. Enjoy tonypeoni!

Tony,

Many will tell you that they have sucessfully lifted the rear of their car via the seam on the engine (near the sump plate).

Personally, it makes no sense to me to lift you car via it's single most expensive component when there are safer alternatives. To lift the rear end I use the factory lift points and put jackstands on the Torsion Bar covers or T-Bar Tubes.

But then again, your car, your money, your choice.

What are you needing to do?

Best of luck.

Aside of harryd being correct; have you ever heard of punctuation? It makes for easy reading, and comprehension of such posts.
