Glad to hear you got your car back.

When I lived in Santa Monica they stole my 964 speedster right out of my garage. The Police told me they probably cased the place and knew my schedule. I used to leave at 6 am each morning to surf and my ex was a tri-athlete and she used to leave same time to train. I got home at my usual 11 ish and opened the garage to find the speedie and my bike gone.

CHP called me the next morning at 6 am to tell me they found the car in El Monte. The bad news was the car was stripped and burned.

USAA was really fast and fair with me.

Glad to hear you got yours back!

Sorry to hear this.
Was this car originally in Orange County? I remember doing an Ortega Run with a similar car that the owner was selling....

Make sure you bring a new battery to start her up, a drained battery like that will toast your alternator if you jump start the car.

Wow, that's amazing!

Will California now "brand" the title as a salvage or as having been stolen, or will the police report now show up on Carfax as a stolen and recovered car?

If so, you should check with your insurance company and see if you can get a payment for diminished value because of the theft. Because if the title gets branded, the value of the car will be hurt, even if no damage was done to the car.

Yes, the owner who "built" the car lived in SoCal, but the car has since seen some further work to bring it to its current state. As always, these things are a work in progress.

Yes, I'm fairly sure it will be branded as salvage unfortunately. that's a great idea though, I'll definitely ask because my coverage is quite good so they may just be willing to work with me on this.

Why would this car now be branded as salvage since its been recovered and the owner is collecting it after all reports etc... are done?

Typically a car does not get branded or receive a salvage certificate, or even get a Car-Fax report as stolen & recovered unless it goes through the insurance auction process...

In essence, you don't pick-up the car and have your repair done, the insurance company writes you a check for the car and you walk away. Now that car is collected by the insurance company and goes to salvage auction. This is when the Insurance company would take the title and brand as salvage and thus issue a salvage certificate.

You should be able to just collect your car and your check for damages, have it repaired and be on your merry way.. with the title and p[aper work just as they were! Well, I know that's how it works on this coast!

Good luck!

Paul

I'm sure want you car returned as soon as possible, but there's a good reason to get your car out of impound quickly. When my truck was stolen in LA, partially stripped, recovered and then taken to police impound, my insurance company was notified. They sent out their claims adjuster, who as part of his report took several photos of my truck in the impound yard. A couple of days later I met the claims adjuster at the impound yard to see the truck and was surprised to find that since the time the photos it had been taken the truck had been further picked over (while in the yard!). All the remaining bits of trim in the photos was now missing. My insurance agent didn't seem too phased by this ad I got the impression that this was not unusual.

And yes you have a beautiful car, now that its back, hopefully it will stay with you for a long time.

Happened to my neighbor about 10 years ago. A guy moved into his house and lived there for a few nights, then drove off in his Targa. It was recovered in Malibu with oil & gas topped up and a gauge repaired. It was left blocking a driveway -- one assumes so that it would not sit out for too long. Weird as it may seem, the guy was just a 'borrower.'

It will only get branded "salvaged" if the insurance company has to cut a check for more than the value of the vehicle. As in most cases, vehicles get stripped of all their value which causes them to be branded "salvaged".

Glad you found your car!

That's so fantastic that you got the car back. I've driven and parked my 73 T everywhere for the last 20 years without much thought - well, actually, I certainly have always avoided parking lots that might get it dinged, and particularly bad neighborhoods, but not much thought of theft. I guess with longnose prices as they have been lately, I'm going to have to think about that. I wonder if any of those steering wheel clubs or locks to the brake pedals have much impact anymore. I assume not.

Meanwhile, I wanted to make a comment about your statement above. While you may have had great results in the past, I once had a bad experience and learned the hard way that they are really the insurnace company's agent, not your's. So, while they will help you to a point, at some point that changes and they have to honor their obligations to their company. In my case, I was in a small fender bender, no other car involved, just a street lamp that had no damage. I called "my" agent, a long time family friend and insurance "agent", to ask whether or not I should put a claim in under my policy. He turned around and reported it to the insurance company and my rates went up. Maybe there was an innocent explanation, or maybe just stupidity on his part. But, either way, it happened and it's a risk you should consider when dealing with your insurance company's agent.

It sounds like you need to switch to another insurance policy -Agreed value.

Go to a collectors insurance for this car. I am with American Collector Car insurance.
Set the price, based on the upgrades and what you would have to spend to have the same car.

Cheaper than you think. Better $100 coverage. etc...

it's insured for "replacement cost". they've been very fair in the past. basically, the process is to establish the value for a stock one in similar condition, and then give them all the receipts for the mods and voila, value of check.

Yeah, in a perfect world. "Replacement cost" is up to the interpretation of the insurance adjuster. If they don't agree when you spent more on the car than it's worth then "voila" you get a check for what some book tells them it's worth.

Good luck and glad to hear you got your car back!

Sounds pretty good.

What I like about mine: I do not have to summarize with receipts. It is just an agreed value.
e.g. 20K car, 5K mods, my effort $2K =Value of my car $27K. Set price with company at $27K -agreed and premium set accordingly. If I overvalued the car, then I paid for it in the premium.
