Heh. Well darn it anyhow. I am feeling deprived. I sure miss the ol 911. Went for $12,500 at the auction eh? SGI called me to ask some things about the car because they know nothing about them..... He thought the heater hoses were for the turbo that was "missing" Lol.

I own a 924 & would be just as happy to see a VW or Audi badge on the hood. Then perhaps I could enjoy the car I choose to drive without all the Bull$hit.
To each their own. 61sktnbug, Congrats on a SWEET find!

Why is the 924 looked down upon?
Possibly because certain neanderthals in the automotive hobby feel they need a BIG car with a Big engine to compensate for being small men (mentally or physically). So how many MILES PER GALLON does a 924 get? The 924 is a nice looking car, drive em if you got um...

My first Porsche was a 1979 924. Guards Red. I thought it was the coolest car I had ever owned. Yes it was a bit slow off the line, but damn that thing could cruise at 100mph all day long. Problem now is that while cheaper to buy than a nice 944, they cost as much to maintain, so most people just go with the 944.

I'll probably get banned for mentioning it, but I think the reason 924s don't get a fair shake from most is that they really don't LOOK very great. Those fender flares are a huge factor in making a 944 look good. And the clean front bumper is another step forward on the turbo/S2s.
Yes, this is my opinion (and a lot of others). But if you look at it from a non-biased view, the 924 is obviously the least good looking of the series. That and the fact that they are the oldest/lowest performance of the group too. Sure, the 931s or the 87 Ss are quicker, but as a whole they're a step lower than the 944 in every measure, and so many people are already disappointed by the 944's lack of grunt. Please don't take these comments as an insult or anything. 924s are obviously still cool/unique/fun cars. These are just the reasons I see for why they're looked down on. |

Typically I don't throw my two sense in the ring with some of these threads, however, in this case I cannot resist. I have owned 4 Porsche cars 2 924's, 1 944 and currently a 968 Coupe. All of which put a smile on my face every time I turned the key. Our little front engine P-Cars are hitting the classic years and we should take pride in any example we have the pleasure of owning. To me it is not about the speed, it is about the engeniring and resposiveness these cars have which is incredible in terms of handling. Each of these cars is a head turner wherever you are and go. In terms of "worth and value", I personally belive that this is not something you simply get out of the blue book. The 944 I had I put lots of many into restoring and had a blast doing it. To me the car really did not have a "Book Value".

I had a '77 for a while, as a 3rd car, along w/ an'86 951 and an '83 Scirocco gt (1.8 ltr). My '77 had the high compression eurospec motor and it was still underpowered, I feel bad for those of you w/ the stock 2.0! The other problem is that the early 924s are severly underbraked, wimpy crappy front brakes w/ solid rotors and bug style rear drums. Mine never got very good mileage, low to mid 20s, and although it had always been well maintained it still required much higher maintenance than my 951.
The 924 would be a classic had it been badged a vw, but then we wouldn't have seen all the models through the 968 (but, why not I guess?). My stock '83 Scirocco was a quicker car (and would probably beat the 924 in every race other than top speed), but sometimes the 924 would surprise me; I was driving up the steepest part of Snoqualmie pass heading East and just held the gas down in 4th, it smoothly and easily accellerated up to 90 on a very steep hill. Nowadays, you can get 944s for so cheap, what's the point of buying an old 924? |

That's funny, I look down on 944 owners with their ridiculous belt maintainence costs, leaky power steering racks, and, well, the power to weight isn't exactly much greater. This isn't even mentioning the number of owners who think "smoked out" rear lenses make them the coolest kid on the block.
There are a number of owners who track their cars with the disc/drum brakes. Were you getting brake fade on the street? I never had a problem with mine even under the hardest braking. The 924's have a much different feel than 944's. They're much more raw and give much more road feedback. 944's are much more civilised GT cars. In my opinion, the 944 fender flares are right out of a Miami Vice episode. The 924 lines are subtle and sleak. nickl

Do I like early 924s? Yes but then I havn't found a Porsche I havn't liked. I've had 356s 914s 911s 944 early 924(1976 I think, the one that Booms in the rear when you hit a bump), and now an 87 924S. There will always be snobs that think their newer more expensive car is Better. But then there are always the cool owners that apprecate your ride no matter what it costs. Drive it take care of it and enjoy it. The guy that gave my 76 924 the thumbs up years ago was in a 911 speedster. He now has a C-GT.

Nickd: you are right about the belts, I changed my '77 924 timing belt in about 45min first try, that's gotta be about the easist timing belt change there is. 944 belts are intimidating, but not too bad once you're prepared (better than Ferraris?).
I had serious brake fade and a lot of smoke one night coming home driving a bit agressively, and not really all that fast, I'm really conservative on the street. It's hard to believe that guys have any luck lapping with those single pot calipers and solid rotors, 924s are light, but not THAT light. |

The two things that bother me on the 924 styling are the big round side markers, and the lack of a spoiler, making the rear end appear unfinished to my eye. The 924S cured the spoiler problem, but it still has the huge marker lights. I'm thinking of deleting them and going to something a little less dated and more refined.

Just something I've noticed about Porsche clubs.......
My first P-car was a 912 - cries of "VW" from 911 owners. I wanted something peppier and took the plunge into a 911. Many thousands of dollars later, I decided that the car cost way too much to maintain for a car with poor rear stability on wet pavement (England) and dumped the 911. The 911 was considered a PORSCHE by everyone, despite the obvious VW Beetle stuff (sorry guys) Came back to the US full-time and bought a 914 2.0....again, cries of "VW" from P-car enthusiasts. Bought a 924 off of eBay, never drove the thing, but I heard cries of "VW/Audi" The 944......I've heard all kinds of cries about the 944...."VW/Audi" etc So, I'm guessing that (with a few exceptions), 911 owners don't like the fact that there are any other cars out there carrying the Porsche crest. I trully believe that if the 944, 912, 914 and 924's were all faster, and cost within a few thousand of the 911 when they were new, everyone would consider them true Porsche cars Just my 2¢

:-) hey guys, sorry about the Miami Vice dig, was a little tongue-in-cheek.
44's are great fun too, but they definitely have a much different feel. The megasquirt'ing is still coming along. Working on it this weekend. A couple 924 guys already have their's up and running (no turbo owners though). Coming from CIS, I had to have a fuel rail made up, get EFI injectors, a fuel pressure regulator, just picked up a BOV from the rennlist group buy. I'm tuning with a wideband o2 and EGT. I even stole a 951 intercooler :-) The timing wheel is tricky, I have the pulley and wheel at a machine/fab shop in south Boston. They're making a spacer on a lathe that the wheel will press on to and the bolt that holds the stock pulley to the crank will go through and pull the spacer down against the pulley. Should work...! I pop into msefi every once in a while. I'm waiting for my new turbo before I reassemble the engine, then I start wiring in the MS and other electronics. I've got to get to work! Enjoy the weekend, nick
