1983 928 question
Hey, I'm new to the forum, as well as the world of 928's. Picked me up a 83 928 that runs when gas is poured in it, but the fuel pump is dead. I'm trying to figure out if it is a 928s or not to know what fuel pump I need. Under the hood the CID is 285 which is 4.7, and has a "s" steering wheel. I've seen many 928's with the "s" painted on the back which mine does not have. The Fuel pump part # is 0 580 464 017 if that helps any. Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

How do you know its the pump? An 83 fuel pump is a 928 608 104 01. You are reading the Bosch number, someone else will have to tel you if that is the same part.
Are the relay, fuse and all the other circuits that are required to get it to run good? Do you have the wiring and fuse, relay diagrams? Put your location in your signature, maybe someone close by can help you also.

The VIN will tell you if it's an "S". Where in Texas are you located? Lots of good people here in Texas (and elsewhere)that can help you if you want help.

I don't think there is any 83 model that is a non-S.

dont leave the fuel pump connected to power more than 5 seconds if its not running,
you can easily cause a fire that will consume the car and whatever building its parked in

I've heard of some luck reversing the leads on the fuel pump to kick out whatever is jamming or clogging it, but its really a good idea to resist the "lets try anything, pour in gas etc to get it running". The ability of the motor to eventually run is rarely an issue on an early car, you need to be thinking about what needs to be done BEFORE its safe to start. Flushing out the tank and the rest of the fuel system along with replacing all the old rubber hoses is a good start.
Pictures and VIN will go a long ways in telling us what you have. Any idea why its been sitting? What are your plans for it? |

1983 928 question
stepson, im located west of Fort Worth. Where in the VIN would tell me? I will be sure not to leave the pump connected longer than that, because i like my cars un-burned... Danglerb, i have reversed the leads to try to kick it loose, but that failed. It has been running recently, within the last year but one of the fuel injector lines split.(i poured gas in it to get it to start before i bought it and it runs great, no unusual noises and is hitting on all 8.) The line was replaced so that i could run it before i went into it. Guess the pump just died of age? Because the gas in it is pure and doesnt have water or crud in it that i can see. It has been sitting because it supposedly has a dead transmission, and it came with another. Was planning to pull the engine and put it in my 82 which is straighter than the 83, but which is easier? Changing transmission or swapping engine and moving all the interrior pieces from the 83 into the 82? The guy i got the 82 started to part it out but i got it before it was too far gone. Now that i think about it, the 83 is complete and (may be) an s. The engine in the 82 got antifreeze set in it and ate away enough of the pressure space to blow a head gasket. It isnt corroded into the cylinder, so im going to try and repair it with JB weld. Have done this on many car engine/tractor blocks and none of them have let me down yet. Thanks!!

People here would run the VIN through the options decoder in PET7 the Porsche online parts catalog.
Pump is pricey, but critical, so maybe a bullet you have to bite. Changing a tranny is maybe 1/3 the work of changing an engine, but chances are very high the engine needs to come out and get freshen up with new gaskets, motor mounts, etc. so I would pick the car you like and focus on making it what you want. Coolant goes bad it may have eaten up parts all over, around the water pump is common too. Good used heads are too cheap to make fixing them maybe much of an option in my thinking. Long isn't so bad, but hit return a couple times once in awhile. |

Dont really want to post the vin here, thats just me
Already bought a pump and it should be in tomorrow or the next day,was $60 on ebay. On the corroded engine, it didnt hurt the head, it hurt the block its self. also, im not going to replace the gaskets until one goes, as the kit's are $300+..Which is easier? Changing the timing belt and water pump with the engine in the car, or pulling the engine to do so? |

MPdano, Thanks, ive heard its a pain to do it in the car.. maybe it wont be so bad for me.
lfausty, whenever i get pic's of them i will post. The black car is in the back yard but i havnt made myself go outside in this heat yet. The 83 is at the other house and i will probably be bringing it here tonight. Actually, i think i have a picture on my phone for the 83 and have the pictures off of the ad for the 82 |

Just soak all the bolts with Kroil or PB. Hopefully they won't break. I only broke 1 on the "S."

You will want to do the water pump and timing belt/tensioner with the engine in the car. You wouldn't happen to know a guy with the last name of Cleveland, would you? I was just talking to him about a friend of his who had just bought an '83 and who lives in west FW.

alright, thanks.
Got the pump on the 928 and took the check ball out of the fuel rail and let it run all of the nasty gas out of there..didnt want that in my injectors. Poured about 2 gallons of gas in it and the pump sounded like it was running dry still so i put about 2 more in it and that went away. After a while of pouring gas into the engine to help it run and clear out the injectors it ran on its own. Whenever i put it in gear it wouldnt go anywhere, so it is either dead or deathly low on transmission fluid. (doubt the previous owner even checked the level) And to my understanding, the only way to check the fluid is from under the car, correct? Thanks!! |
