'87 Carrera Targa - High Miles to say the least!
OK, I'm officially asking for it:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=304009 Am I way out of line or what? I figure add 3.5-4K for a top end and clutch and she's good to go for a long time.

Tough call with the miles. Even if the new owner puts 3-4K into it for the repairs you say it needs, its still a very high mileage car
218,000 and counting. Looks clean, records, newer top, the coveted 16-x9 Fuchs etc. Given what you say it needs $8000-10000 as is As I said tough call with the miles, but you asked ! Too bad you cant just keep it & run it into the ground or make a Targa track car out of it

3-4k really seems on the low side for a top end rebuild & clutch. Depending on part of the country just a clutch replacement seems to be $1500-$2200 (no 'while you're in there').
I think most prospective buyers would be figuring something closer to the $8k-$10k type911 suggests. In the end the only thing that matters is if it sells. If it does, then the price is right, if not then you're priced high. |

I don't think Marc said it "needs" a top end rebuild. The car runs fine as is. I think he is trying to make the point that it would not take a lot of money to make this a nearly $20k car. I have seen this car; it is nice as is, and I would expect it to not need anything major for some time.

The motor has to be pulled to do the top end so any mechanic that charges you significantly extra to install a clutch is ripping you off. If this car doesn't sell at it's current 13K OBO then you can expect a perfectly good G-50 Carrera will be stripped of all it's desirable parts and cut up into the smallest manageable peices. Anyone know where I can buy bulk sawsall blades? This is going to be fun. I'll post pic's when the day comes. Another one bites the dust.

For comparison, another member of this board (bento)
is selling an '88 3.2 Carrera with 230,000 miles for $13,500 and he told me his mechanic thinks it may have up to another 50,000 left in the engine (at this point no use cracking the case, just drive it until it breaks on its own, then rebuild). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=302801

Sell the 9x16's seperately for the $1000-1500 they command, and then realize the car is only going to pull in about 10K in the used car market, given the high mileage. Even your clutch/top end have over 100,000 miles on them so a prospective buyer would need to budget for that work, plus all the other things, like the drivers window etc that a 20 year old car can expect to have fail. Your best bet for sale is to stick it on your yard or local grocery store lot and hope to find someone who want a shiny new toy.

There was a guy in me area that was selling an 85 Carrera Coupe with the front/rear spoiler's, G-50 Conversion and a bottom-up full rebuild of the motor that was chipped and had high-compression pistons installed wit about 10,000 miles on it.
The seller (Who was the original owner) had a nice thick book of all the service from day one. He was asking $14,000 for the car but the mileage was around 258,000. I test drove the car and it was a blast. Just needed new suspension bushings and the interior was tired looking and the wear bars were showing up on the tires. After about a year someone picked it up for $8,000 ( I should have waited )

I wonder if a PPI would have picked up something amiss. http://www.dorkiphus.com/porsche/showthread.php?t=10325

Amazing thread on the sold Carrera, John. Sounds to me like a solid car went to some clown that missed a shift on the way home and is trying to get the seller to pay for it. Surprised no one on that forum even explores that possibility. "Honest everyone, I was just driving along and it tossed a rod..." Yeah right. Smells very fishy.
