One thing we questioned with CP and JE pistons is the sharp transision between valve pockets. Theoretically, it promotes better exhaust gas expulsion. I'm sure you considered this mild modification but I thought I would mention it for people who didn't.

Henry, I'm somewhat a newbie to the Pelican forums, and just finding this thread. I recently built a RoW 1980 SC engine using the 74.4 crank and rods from a Turbo to get a 3.2. I worked with both William Knight and Dick Elverud to spec it and do machine work. I assembled it. One of the things I like to use in engines is thermal barrier coatings (TBC). William advised against TBC on the piston or combustion chamber. However, I did put it in the exhaust port to reduce heat transfer to the heads.

It looks like the pistons you posted have a TBC on them. Is that TBC or just a different surface finish?

Thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge.

Bumping for me to respond, or Henry? I'm hoping Henry will reply.

I'm not sure I understand the logic in ignoring thermal barrier in high heat applications.

POWERKOTE™ CBC-1 CERAMIC THERMAL BARRIER COATING

Quote:
Thermal barrier/heat management

Reduces part temperature. Protective to above 2000°F.
Keeps heat in the combustion chamber longer through the power stroke.
Blurs hot spots. Reduces the potential for detonation.
Highly resistant to thermal shock. Survives cyclic heating and cooling.

Henry, do the manufacturers of these coatings ever provide a thermal conductivity value at the recommended application thickness?

I googled the one posted, found only application instructions.

How do you evaluate expected effectiveness without that kind of basic data?

Henrys post

I wonder too about thermal coatings but am thinking that putting them on the piston crown implies that you would need to adjust cold clearances-perhaps risking them being too tight cold and risking skirt damage,
In other locations though there is certainly merit.

Can I ask how much a set of 3.0’s? I’m building a stock with a 964 cams. Evaluating my budget.

I guess we all get to choose who we listen to.

From Mahle Motorsports.

Quote:
Ceramic coatings on piston crowns are proven technology, and MAHLE is now offering their proprietary ceramic thermal barrier coating on any of its PowerPak lineup of performance forged pistons, in both the gas and diesel engine lineup. MAHLE’s Ceramic-based coating acts as a physical heat barrier on the crown of the piston.

An article from Engine Builder Magazine.

Quote:
JE’s Nick DiBlasi,
Fortunately, unlike some custom piston upgrades or options, ceramic crown coat is appropriate for all kinds of applications. “One of the great benefits of ceramic coating is that it is so universal,” DiBlasi explains. “We have huge success using this in all types of applications. We apply it on pistons for forced induction, nitrous oxide and naturally aspirated applications regularly, and have tested it on all fuel types. In order to ensure compatibility with whatever customers might throw at it, we have done extensive work creating ‘worst case’ scenarios in an attempt to make the crown coating formula fail so it won’t cause a problem for the end user. We go through a rigorous testing process to ensure we are getting maximum adhesion and benefits.”
Because ceramic crown coating is thinner than a human hair, it can be applied to any piston without requiring any changes to the crown or combustion chamber design.

Overall ceramic crown coating is good insurance for the racer pushing the edge, especially in the forced induction and nitrous realms. In naturally aspirated environments, the additional heat reflected into the chamber can even improve exhaust scavenging that returns real world horsepower!

Has anyone who has purchased these pistons, built an engine and run it yet? If so, what was your engine spec and how did it perform?

There must be at least a dozen sets out in the wild by now?

Mike, as you may know, we have a set of 98mm one for 74.4 stroke 3.4. Looking forward to the engine we do finally build with them.

Cheers

Hi Jeff, yes, really looking forward to hearing from someone like yourself with experience and able to say "yes" or "no" to this design.
