The LGS is getting in dribbles of the popular types of ammo along with a small amount of reloading supplies. I just happened to be there one day when he opened some boxes from one of his suppliers and low and behold, there were primers in the box! So, I walked out with 2K small pistol and small rifle primers along with a pound of powder! When the ammo started getting scarce, I dug out my old RCBS single stage press, powder scale and dies. Since then, I have been cleaning and prepping as many old ammo cases as possible and reloading them when I have all the components. Right now I am waiting on some bullets to get here so I can put together some more 9mm, 38 special and 45ACP. Don't know if I will ever get to the bottom of the brass pile, but will give it my best try!

Going to get my ready for the starlings. Good way to keep in practice.

6.5 million (MILLION) new gun owners last year. Each one shoots 150 rounds a month. Thats almost 1 BILLION rounds of ammo over and above those who already shoot regularly. Some say 9 million new owners.
Add to that current owners who didn't stock up and are now trying to stock up considering the current political climate.

Most of the new owners are not shooting 150 rounds a month.

Umm... of course they are. Most air guns are incapable of breaking the sound barrier, unless fired with some b.s. contrived super lightweight plastic ammo.

Oh, and suppressors do not work with super sonic ammo anyway. The little "sonic boom" associated with the bullet breaking the sound barrier is the largest part of the noise generated by super sonic ammo.

Not sure what you were getting at - if anything.

There's very little available because people are panic buying. Most likely had more ammo than they'd ever need already but into fear bought into fear.

And... why in the hell is anyone shooting 150 rounds per month? And please spare me the "because I can" answer.

When we go to the range, which we use to before ammo shortage, it was a once a month. We would bring the AR 10's and 15, 1911, 45, two 9mm pistols, 22' and the mighty .380! and then go to the skeet range with a few different shotguns. Add all that up, and it more than 150 rounds. Since the shortage not so much right now.

I expect there are many who are into shooting who go through more than 150 rounds per month.

Your average gun owner is more like my neighbor. He owns exactly 1 pistol and has exactly 1 box of ammo. He goes to the range every 2 or 3 years.

I just don't get why. You can send 5-10 rounds down range and accomplish the same thing. Burnin .380 can get spendy quick!

I have friends who will burn 2 or 3 boxes of slugs before deer season to sight their gun in. I send 3 down range. If it's off, I'll send more but rarely do I ever send more than 3. Same for my .450 and my 22/250 before the groundhogs start popping out. 3 down range to check accuracy and grouping. If I start missing at distance, I might send more but since my last episode where my 250 when wild, I learned a good cleaning fixes things. I might burn 100 rounds of my 250 ammo in an entire season (till the beans get too tall to see the pigs) of groundhog hunting.

I guess I don't think of target shooting as a recreational thing. I think of it in terms of having my guns ready for hunting season and it doesn't take many rounds to do that. But! I'm frequently shooting something whether it be my crossbow, compound bow, air rifle, shotgun, pistol or hunting rifles because the seasons are pretty close together. Deer season ends, rabbit season is still in. Rabbit season ends, coyote is always open. Spring comes and it's groundhogs then back to fall and deer season again.

I don't go every month but when I do I will shoot 2-3 hundred of each caliber I take... Well my son and I do.

We don't hunt - the point is to have some fun target shooting

Gun owners are obviously made up of the variety of society , meaning they run the full gamut of thoughts/values/emotions . I am a gun owner , 63 years old and have owned guns since I was about 14 . I think the majority of responsible gun owners are like me and enjoy ownership for sport/target and self defense if needed .

But just like society a certain percentage are nuts . Any change in wind direction can send a nut over the edge . These folks believe in any half a$$ed rumor or conspiracy theory coming down the pike . These are the folks helping drive prices up and creating shortages . The average owner that just wants to pick up a box or two is screwed .

This is just my opinion and NOT directed at anyone here . It is just a broad brush opinion . For now and the near future target practice for me is not happening . I have a small stash of the calibers I use and will hold onto them just in case the tin foil hat wearers are right 😁

Yep. The $800 per year ("insurance" policy) and the 30% tax on guns and 50% tax on ammo will price many out of legal ownership. Especially for the working poor/lower middle class and will likely end ownership among most women and young people.

Unfortunately it will drive up illegal/back alley purchases . For the guns initially but ammo will soon follow . If it's too difficult or expensive to purchase legally a cottage industry of illegal will gladly backfill .

You mean like the days of prohibition? Nah... that's stuff made up in the movies! No one would turn to illegal methods of obtaining something if regulations get too onerous.

Here's an article from today. Not sure anyone knows the real truth, but just another piece of the puzzle.

Business is booming in this small-town gun shop
