None of those fancy-schmancy shoes come in my size, 14. I prefer a pair of very worn Sperry mocassins. That or barefoot, like Masten Gregory.

Good article. I do not get it? Yeah what we did was dangerous back in the day but what are these drivers today doing that is causing these shunts? Today they have ABS, traction control and better tires. Vehicle systems are better engineered as a whole. Chassis' are stiffer and CAD designed for rigidity. I think we just have stupid people doing things in cars they have no right to do. Idiots going beyond self limits and beyond vehicle control. Too young and too fast.

Lets step back in time 25 years. We still had bias ply tires transitioning to radials. We didn't have VR and ZR rated tires like today. ABS would not be born until the mid 80's and then it wasn't true ABS. It was usually a 2 channel circuit with rear suspension bias valves and linkage connected to an modulator at best unless you had a top of the line Benz. We had shocks and struts that were gas pressurized and some were still just oil filled. We had brake linings that were obsolete compared to todays materials. We had lighting that is very dim by todays standard. If you were lucky or creative you had Halogens. We could find or know our limits. If we went too far most of the time we still made it home. Back to the drawing board and come back in a few nights after adjustments. We had cars setup with high camber and stiff sway bars. We had better driver's who knew what they were doing. We had driver's who knew the road.

Things I still question today: Front wheel drive is it better? In the snow maybe? I still believe rear wheel drive has an advantage and is safer. I prefer motive power that push's vs. pull's anyday. I would rather put a car into drift then push to the outside of the apex. I can predict drift. Attempting to be an Astrology expert with push usually leads to trouble. Going straight with the wheel turned is not exciting. Cars were heavier than today. I have seen RWD cars turn faster laptimes than AWD's except for the late 80's/ early 90's Audi Quattro race cars on steroids.

I think this brings us back to "we just have stupid people doing thing's in cars they have no right to do today. Idiots going beyond self limits and beyond vehicle control". The media I am sure assists in making the 600 oclock news like never before. Are cars really superior today? Personally I think many provide a false sense of security. Gadgets are cool an so are Ipod docking stations but they distract attention from the operator. I still prefer less buttons today.

i really didn't want to comment on this article, but what those stupid kids (mostly) are doing has nothing to do with what you guys did on mul so many years ago.

I think there are a couple of fundamental differences between our car culture and the current crop of teens.IMO the fast and furious films have greatly influenced young drivers over the last ten years or so,and the mishaps have increased proportionatley.The emphasis now is all about your whip and image,all we wanted to do was learn how to drive.It wasn't about the car, it was about the aesthetic of DRIVING-that's why certain guys on the hill could hustle sheetboxes faster than others in superior equipment.Of course that was a by product of the Mulholland dynamic-an impossibility in todays "street racer"enviroment.Think about it,Charlie was an urban legend in his grand sports clone,but he would have been just backround had he not driven the wheels off it. Todays cars,while infinitely safer,are much,much faster and that's where the problem comes in.There seems to be money for turbo upgrades and gook tubes but not for DE events. Most of the core guys I hung with from back then took their fledgling talent very seriously.We had a bigger idea of where we wanted to take it.The emphasis was on smoothness,car control,throttle input..all traits necessary for surviving such an unforgiving enviroment- and we rarely put a wheel wrong on track as a result!(Like CRE mentioned it made for one hell of a crop of SS endurance racers).Some of us categorically wanted nothing else but to become race cars drivers-my hero was Ronnie Peterson and I patterned my style after him up there. Vin Diesel images aside,I don't think a large amount of todays car youth really aspire beyond the moment.That certainly may have been true for some on Mul in the 70's or as Dave Barry wrote in his article"lingering between high school and the start of a career" or something along that line. Today it's seemingly angst without direction, limits or talent and while that's nothing new cars now as you alluded to are much easier to drive and deceptively confidence inspiring,providing for bigger drama..

I agree- Most of my cohorts and I just wanted to drive also. Made do with what we had and lived to tell about it.
