Hi guys, new member/long-time lurker here. This thread is awesome, I'm absolutely fascinated by the old Mulholland racing culture (and local SoCal sports car culture in general). I loved Banning's book but I'm always looking for more sources of info on the subject. Chris, are you ever going to expand that website you started? (http://www.mulhollandracing.com) Could be really cool.

I may have to get one of those stickers...

That's an excellent idea. When I'm finished working on the second edition of the Mulholland Experience, I'll take the time to work on that. Thanks.

Sweet, I'm looking forward to the 2nd edition.

Question: was there ever any semi-organized racing on the more demanding roads west of the Mulholland Dr. race course? Say, on the tight stuff like Mulholland Hwy near the Rock Store, Decker, Tuna Canyon, etc?

There is a group of current racers that race on and near Mulholland Hwy. Go to www.mulhollandraceway.org

This group specifically states that they don't race on Mulholland Dr. at all.

They hold regular meets, and supposedly race ten-tenths in their little rice burners.

The fastest ones from Mulholland Dr. are in a different class.

Yeah, I've been to that site, lots of pomposity and a verbose writing style but there is some interesting stuff to read. Getting into their driving group is pretty much impossible though, as is getting access to their more exclusive web content. Which isn't surprising considering the negative attention the site's gotten, with the Operation Safe Canyons thing and all.

There is an exception..

For some time, there has also been a group called the Malibu Rat Pack that race their Ferraris, Lambos and Shelbys on Mulholland Hwy and the surrounding canyons. I was invited to go with them a couple of times and Holy Crapp, these guys mean business. The first time I joined them we drove down Sunset Blvd. to PCH and on up to Malibu and Mulholland Hwy. On the way to PCH on Sunset, I was coming into the right hander before Mandeville Canyon, lost traction, and drifted the Testarossa into oncoming lanes. My wife yelled, "I'm never driving with you again, you're a friggin maniac!" After getting new Michelin Pilot Sport Tires I felt more confident for the next weekend.

The next weekend that I joined them we drove to the beginning of Mulholland Hwy. at Pacific Coast Hwy. and proceeded up into the hills. I was alone in my car and could really hang it out without a woman yelling in my ear. I passed the other Ferraris but could not pass the new Shelby. Some of those turns are quite tight going uphill from the beach and with throttle at maximum, with the front end plowing slightly, the rear end comes around predictibly. What do you know? That big red brick called a Testarossa, four-wheel drifts in the turns like a racecar, (with enough gas applied). I wouldn't recommend it however on city streets. When your car is committed in the turn like that, there is no room for error, or water, or anything else that is unforseen.

I was able to pass the Shelby finally on the long straight of Mulholland over the first hill but I had to drive the fastest that I ever drove the Ferrari on any street, way too dangerous.

Note: I'm selling the Testarossa if anyone is interested. It's currently being advertised for sale in the two Ferrari Club periodicals. What a beautiful car, but too dangerous in the hands of anyone that likes to be the fastest.

IT belongs to a gentlemen named Markus. He's a local, but for some unkown reason I don't think he is a very active Pelican .....yet. I filled him in on our weekly meetings at Bobs and he sounded interested. I'm not sure if we'll ever see this car there as it is about as street legal as Radu's ride. Give me a couple minutes and I'll post some pics of the power plant.

Too many details to remember but you really need to hear this thing to appreciate it.

It would appear that the chances of Bob's happening tonight are pretty slim with the rain.
