Enough tranny's, lets talk engine
Enough on tranny's, lets talk engines.
This is the mythical Flat 16 air-cooled twin plug behemoth that was destined for the 917. Unfortunately someone at the factory didn't tell poppa what he was up to in the werks shop and had his keys taken away. Trivia: How many oil pumps did the Flat 16 actually have? Do your homework. ![]()

Peter Brock -BRE
Interesting email I received last night from Peter Brock along with some photos.
It started as a question to a teacher via one of his former students (Radu did you read your email?) Great response from Peter about his former student and he attached a few photos of his projects that are in the works along with a stunning Daytona Coupe. How about a new BRE 510 with a Bowtie V8 and judging by the photos he sent, how much engine setback it is technically a mid engine. Motor sits behind the axle line. Wicked! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I was once in Vasak Polak's (sorry if I didn't get that spelling right) garage and Carl pointed to a stack of crankshafts and said that they were all of the 16 cylinder crankshafts ever made. (there were about a dozen).
Oil pumps, I guess 3. (two 6 cylinder engines with a 4 tacked onto the back)

Actually 7 pumps. One in the front of the crankcase which is split into 2 separate scavenge pumps for the front and rear crankcase. A pressure pump which feeds oil into the crankshaft axially from both sides. Four more small scavenge pumps at the ends of the exhaust camshafts to keep the camshaft housings dry. To much oil in those housings saps too much power in the engineers opinion. I heard it takes 6 hours to do a valve adjustment after the engine is removed from the car. Ouch!

And we're back.
I heard a story of a go-cart that ran Mulholland sometime back and the guy strapped a flashlight to his helmet.... Dave B. can elaborate. Some good stories were passed around his new shop this evening ![]() Funny Videos

Aerodynamic aids
I am not sure if those Aerodynamic aids were a benefit or hazard? Could you imagine that foil coming off at 180? Watch out might take out an eye with that thing!

Would you look at the size of that thing? (69' Chaparral 2H) in 1970.
![]() ![]() That is definitely "more cow bell"......... ![]() Imagine that puppy coming off at speed? It would be like Henry VIII. "Off with his head"! Eeeak! ![]()

Aerodynamic aids an "Sucker Cars"
Can't leave out the "Sucker Cars" Was a great concept until the Rotax snowmobile engines quit. I bet they threw sparks when the dams and aprons rubbed the ground. I thought they were flexible but that behind photo proves otherwise.
![]() Look mom! No wings. ![]() These cars really intrigued me when I was younger. Big blocks rule and if they suck all the better!

Derek-
It would probably be thoughtful if you didn't call Porsche "crapp", on a site devoted to Porsches. The next time that I see you we will discuss this in private. By the way...I applaude you for your MIRRC graphic and for making items available. I know that Jeff if most pleased. Keep up the good work on that. Way to go. Jeff, if I remember right the skirts were Lexan and they would retract a bit. You meant to say Chaparral, not Chevron right?
