Got rid of the plate frame that said, "Catch me if you Can". The car would be pulled over while still at the curb with that on it.
The plate's now fastened to the car with Stainless Steel Rivets. ![]() |

After carefully removing the deck lid, it was exhanged with the Whale Tail that was resting in the shed.
The paint on the Tail matches the car's paint since they were painted together in 1976. ![]() Some final fitting was needed so that the Tail rests on the body in the proper place. It looks pretty good on the car now. ![]() View from the back. ![]() Man! Look at those Goodyears! ![]() In this photo you can see how flush the rear window is to the body. ![]() The headlight assemblies needed to be tightened better to the headlight buckets. I used a speednut to repair one side. Some of the grounds are giving me slight grief. Porsche has a new museum in Stuttgart. It is really cool!
Just in case some of you guys didn't know about it. Here's the details. Set to open to the public Saturday at the automaker's headquarters in the city's Zuffenhausen district, the museum is a sprawling monument to 60 years of German engineering. Engines, interactive displays, Porsche memorabilia and 80 cars - including prototypes and icons like the 911, all polished to a mirror-sheen - are parked on two floors of pristine, white galleries. The collection includes a 550 Spyder - the model James Dean was driving when he died in a collision with a Studebaker in 1955. Other models, like the 917 type Hollywood star Steve McQueen made famous in "Le Mans" and the 928 version Tom Cruise's character in "Risky Business" used to elude trouble, are parked bumper-to-bumper under dazzling spotlights. A handcrafted aluminum recreation of the very first Porsche, a Type 64 'VW Aerocoupe,' shines in the center of the first floor. On the top floor five generations of 911 turbos rotate in tandem, showing off the dainty differences to their styling cues. Other cars stand out for their oddity, such as the 1957 "Jagdwagen" or hunting car, an amphibious vehicle ready for road and pond - whose unique design brought back memories for invited guests at this week's official opening of the museum. Each car is described with signs in English and German, and visitors can get up-close-and-personal with the vehicles, with no barriers keeping them at a distance. Another favorite is the 917/20 race car nicknamed the "Pink Pig." The extra-wide car was painted pink and labeled with the names of different cuts of meat after a designer complained about its shape. Prototypes on display include a 928 model almost long enough for four doors, a 1989 "Panamericana" with odd, frog-like curves and the darling of the museum staff: the 1992 Boxster prototype that won Best in Show at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show. Many of those in display still race in events around the world and almost every car in the museum is road ready - leaving the building perfumed with the smell of fresh grease and motor oil. Behind a glass wall opposite the main entrance, visitors can watch mechanics working on the museum's collection. |

i've been following this thread and was wondering what happened to john hall? has he responded to anything on this forum? chris, where can i get a copy of your book? is the 2nd ed. available yet? i'm hooked on this topic and watch kotm at least 3 times a week. i was checking out some footage on porsche driving the nurburgring on you tube. type in porsche nurburgring and there's a video of a guy driving a bright yellow ruf turbo around the nurburgring just blazingly fast. looks like mulholland on steroids.

Kevin fixed the whale tail latch backing for me and made it stronger.

After satisfying my wife Jane with a ride thru the Racecourse with the new tires, I stopped at Bowmont for some pictures.
I made sure to give her a thrill. ![]() The new tires slid some until they got hot. After that, gravel was throwing behind the Carrera like a fantail from the stickyness of the tires. Love those Blue Streaks! ![]() ![]() On the road again... ![]() ![]() ![]() On the way back home while stopping at Coldwater, a guy in a set up Miata with a roll cage and window net slowed to out check the Carrera. He, like many others left Mulholland behind to pursue other things in life. For John it was probably a good idea. He badly needed a change in his life and he has found peace and happyness in Phoenix. John has always been a best friend as well as my "Best Man" at my Hawaii wedding long ago. I miss his company, his competitive spirit, and I wish like heck that he were still here on Mul with me. ![]() The Carrera took a priority so the second edition of the book has been delayed. chris thanks for the info on john hall and your book. i'm definately going to get it. i think the driver of the ruf 930 is stephan roser and is a test driver alois ruf. the guy has sack. thought you guys would appreciate the vid. thanks again.

I tried to post this last week, but I was locked out due to not having the minimum number of posts. Here’s another try:
I came across this thread a couple of weeks ago. I have now read the entire thing. Because of this thread I went searching on the internet and found the guy who first took me to the racecourse in his modified Ghia 30 years ago. I thought he might like to see this as well. I never saw Chris up there, but did see Hall run. I knew of Chris from the New West article and really wanted to see that car. I was just a guy standing on the fringes, but it left a lasting impression. Shortly after I first sat at Grandstands I bought a Datsun 1600 roadster. I eventually took it up to Mul. That was dangerous. The Datsun had about a 65/35 forward balance, and much worse under braking. Not a car for the hill. After spending some time rebuilding an MGA I bought my modified 914/6. By then there was no scene on the hill, but I would go up and make solo runs. I’ve subsequently sold the Six and bought a Boxster S. A few weeks after purchase that car also ran on the old racecourse. By the way Chris, you have been talking about your roll cage as T6 alloy. T6 is actually the heat treat condition of the alloy. I would think it would be something like 6061 alloy, so 6061-T6. Of course where it was welded it was annealed, so at those (critical) areas if was probably T0 when new (unless it was re-heat treated). Over the years it has possibly aged back to a T6 condition. I’m surprised none of the fabricators here have mentioned this. One other thing, do you have a schedule for the 2nd ed. of the book, and the companion book. I would buy the first ed. today, but If the 2nd ed. is going to be that much better I will wait. ![]() |
