Now that's slope failure! Gonna take a while to fix this movement. Can't just fill it in and call it good like they do in the Philippines.

All the loose material will have to be taken out and put back, while compaction is done to re-stabilize the slope so it can be paved again.

If steel reinforced caissons are required to lock into bedrock, the price and time needed to complete repair will increase significantly.

Sorry to hear about this Mark. I hope it dosn't impact you too much.

Work approved and expected to last 2 months, as it is The City of LA add another 2 months for arguing over which tractor to use.
Many email and phone calls ( all of which would be edited by the moderator of this board) and residents threatening GBH to named City officials and elected reps. In the end some of the many celebs here started to organize the press and it went from closed indefinitely to give us 60 days. Major Nightmare for all us of residents as it has encouraged commuters to explore cut throughs to beat Laurel Canyon's new role as parking lot, usually at 50 MPH.

Thus "School Zone" now reads "Increase to Ramming Speed" as the whole Valley drives on Wonderland Avenue twice a day. I only wish The City would pave the whole course instead of patching the failure and then painting the stripes off the ideal line as they have everywhere else. Benedict Cyn had been paved twice since I have been here and The Course not at all. P.J O'Rourke's article for Car and Driver about the top stretch of Benedict the week it was finished is laugh out loud funny BTW. Then he discovered the sound of his own voice and The GOP and he isn't so funny anymore.

Good news to hear. However, it only proves the point of LA that nothing ****** happens here unless it becomes a celebrity cause. Maybe we could talk to some celebrity car enthusiasts about convincing the city to repave all of Mulholland Drive?

...with banked turns... ...pit stops... and TV covered competition... lol

Sorry Derek, it dosn't look like the City cares much about Mulholland unless prodded by "important " celebrities.

It wasn't even big celebs, some folks you might or might not recognize who are soooooo happy not to be waiting tables. But The City fathers are whores at heart and the one thing Whores and mob bosses don't want it's publicity. When I told them that I was going to blind copy all of the celebs on "my list" the emails that were stating an indefinite closure things happened very quickly; a press release stating a decision would be reached in 24 hours was issued to the Times and local news AND a certain councilman's assistant asked if any of the younger females on "my list" might come to her Girl Scout Troop meeting to kick off the Nationwide Cookie sale. Amazing. Especially because I don't have a "list".

Thank you but I know for a fact there were 4 other loose groups of heavier hitters getting ready to make a pretty fair sized fuss, it is really brutal this side of Coldwater and I think the kicker was all of the cement mixers building the homes in gated Bowmont now all take Coldwater and lumber up Cherokee in low gear. About every 10 minutes. We used to call that part of BHPO or 90210 Post Office NIMBYS remember? Now they are BANANAS: Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone.
Have you seen the retaining walls they are putting up for those homes? I am pretty sure the GDP for the State of CA will dip by an appreciable percentage when they are finished.

Good point about the post and The City **** list and if I thought for one minute those folks had what it takes to scroll down a whole page-nevermind all 278 of them- I would be more cautious.

PS Thanks for the Ferrari Shell clip, really enjoyed that.

You're correct. Whores.

Any chance you could threaten using your "list" again for other things? What about getting Mulholland Dr. registered as some sort of historical landmark so they MUST maintain it? Mention people like Errol Flynn, James Dean, Steve McQueen, etc.

Just an idea.

I wish,
Actually Mulholland is a landmark; The Mullholland Parkway Scenic Review Plan is pretty specific to what can be built anywhere in view from Mulholland. It affects the roadway too, 150 foot setback from the center divide for housing (compromised in numerous places) as it was at one point inteded to turn it into four lanes! Any addition to a home visible from Mulholland is subject to the review but it is hardly enforced at all; when The City wants to kill your department they just don't fund it and it dies a slow death.

The roadway is a disgrace but could be repaired pretty easily as The City demonstrated in front of Beverly Park and also all of 4 lane Laurel Canyon on the Valley side. Fact is every environmental impact report made over the last 15 years has been met with stiff resistance by area residents and the loose Homeowner's Associations, notably Laurel Hills and Upper Bel Air because, this is ironic given all of us hot shoes tearing up the roadway over the last 40 years: they don't want any more bicyclists. It is felt that a brand new bump free Mulholland will attract them from all corners and they are probably right. Roadhogging, fist shaking lard asses in spandex and really expensive bikes is probably the main reason the course looks like an alley in Downtown Bosnia.

What that nutjob Dr. did on Mandeville to the bikers is reprehensible but it is a pretty big problem, the other of course is some drivers who really cannot drive or drive 10/10ths and scare the living cr*p out of all of us. I drive, or did drive each way several times a day to and from work and for work and I have seen 2 go over and many more where I thought they would. I might get on a sporty car and its fun when we each push it a little or someone will get on me and many times I see them fishtailing trying to keep up. And I am not an idiot, you can ask Derek, I am not even the fastest 911 at AutoX I just know the road REALLY well having been on it for the last 30 years. So hold those cards and letters sportsfans, I do my racing at the track.

I am afraid the residents and The City feel the best deterrent is a bumpy mess and they are right in an inadvertent way: redone Mul attaracts every rice rocket and acne ridden Mustang driver from the 14 Western states and we get speed bumps within 6 months as "something must be done about all the deaths".

That's an excellent post! And quite informative. Thanks for explaining to the rest of the world about the Scenic Parkway Plan, the bicycle problem, and the probable reason for the state of the roadway.

I avoid driving on Mulholland on Sunday mornings so that I don't have to deal with the cyclists. They are generally rude, inconsiderate, and obnoxious. It's been that way since they started showing up in groups in the early 1980's. (kind of ironic since residents used to avoid the Racecourse at night to avoid running into Racers), (times change don't they?)

With a few exceptions the road is in poor shape for sure. We know that a perfect Mulholland roadsurface would invite more (inexperienced) racers and more bicyclists which in turn would lead to more Police presence, Intersection lights, and cameras in the bushes. Not good. In my opinion it may be better to leave Mulholland in less than perfect shape to avoid escallating traffic problems. Besides it's always been kind of messed up. The original asphalt roadway is over 70 years old, small portions of it can still be spotted on the outside of certain corners.

Part of the fun of Mulholland is the bumps I think. You just have to set your car up for big bumps and then attempt to memorize where all of them are at different times of the year. It makes it more challenging. If you make a mistake...you and/or your car will be punished.

One more thing, if anyone is dumb enough to go 10/10's on this now overcrowded Mulholland, it had better be at Midnight or later. And don't forget to pre-run your route before raking up the speed. Always do this to make yourself aware of unseen hazards, water in the roadway, accidents and traps.

As I said the Dr.'s actions on Mandeville were reprehensible but like Christopher Walken in Annie Hall; it is tempting occasionally isn't it to just drive through a peleton of them coming the other way to see how many ride over the edge and whether you can punt the rest further over than those that rode voluntarily? Rude, obnoxious and fat for the most part especially the laggards in the rear and I have seen many of them finish a water bottle and just toss it over the side. Peasants.

That is a very good point about driving your route first; many years ago I learned the hard way that what is dry during the day does not stay so with automatic sprinklers coming on at night. Water has an uncanny ability to find the apex and makes things very interesting at that most crucial point.

Just came back from walking the course east to west, kind of surreal with the patchy fog and iPod on shuffle. I will take photos next time.

3 Caissons are in with 5 to go, moving right along. We are kidding ourselves if we think this will make too much difference. It will be nice to have the road open again but walking it you can really see how terrible the condition of the road and slope is. I cannot help but think we are just covering the rust with bondo. There are 6 other places where the same is about to happen and there has been zero preventative work done to alleviate the issues with drainage. Walking, you can HEAR the slope groaning and rocks and pebbles rolling down to the roadway from above.

With all the times this group has gathered to drive the course, I think you would all have a ball walking it, we could meet and park at Grandstands early one morning say 7:30......

Yeah shoot some pix of those caissons going in if you can get close enough.

I wonder if things might be improved with pounding in some sheet piling in certain areas... high side and low side.

Thank you. The 2.4S engine needs rebuilding. Chain tensioners are fully extended and the chains are hanging like an 80 year old woman's coconuts.

Body is good but needs slight adjustment to the frame in the front. After my mom had a collision at Moorpark and Beverly Glen with the car in 1993 I repaired it. However the frame straighting shop aligned the suspension points but not the apron points so I had to make a splice to make the drivers fender fit. No damage was done from the cowl panel back. Still has original paint from windshield back. Bought the car in Jan. 73

I have been collecting 2.4 motor components for the last year.
There is now enough engine parts under the Grand Piano to make two MFI motors.

One of the MFI engines is destined for the Volkswagen Type 34 Spyder that is set up for racing. (One of the next projects)

The other MFI engine was going to go into the Corvair Pickup that I just painted in the driveway. However that is just too much to do, my plate if full, so will sell the other motor probably.

It may be sometime before the white car is roadworthy again. It will end up being a 2.7 Carrera when done.
The new book awaits finishing and many projects need completion. I'll do the best that I can and can post progress here if anyone's interested.
