Porsche vs. American muscle
I want to start this out by saying I have always loved American muscle cars. Chevelles, Camaros, 442s, etc.... They are probably the reason I'm a motor head today. Once I met Ms. 911 though, all of those huge displacement cars didn't matter so much to me. What really gets me is that they were 3 thousand dollar cars to begin with. Now you want 35K. It ain't me babe. What do you have to say?

in the 60's and 70's my dad owned a car wholesale business.. I drove everything there was to drive, 440 mags 454's , camaros , mustangs, dodges, cadillacs, everything, sometimes I would change cars 3-4 times a day, then I pissed dad off ... he gave me a vw sunbug to drive, well I wasn't going to take this lying down, I punished the sh55t out of it . I drove it on off road... when he finally cooled off and sold it I actually hid the keys to it, when I found PORSCHES well you know

Let's see...you both have early bumpercar 911's?
Glad you like 'em....somebody has to, I suppose... Just don't be too shocked when one of these leaves you in it's dust... ![]()

To be honest, and with all due respect to American muscle, I'll take a 911 over a mustang without a thought. I do appreciate a nice muscle car but it does not move me like a 911 does.

Paul I know you are sour about the PCA and the lack of local service.... But putting that aside.... You know you would have rather had an '09 911 than the stang.... Compare year to year.... the 911 is better....
Or are you an aircooled snob? |

Gerinomo...trust me on this one...if I'd wanted an '09 911, I'd have bought one. For several reasons, I decided not to. Or, I'd have kept the one I had. Just got tired of Porsche. But I find it funny that "snob" was used...the initial 2 posts dripped snobbery...and let's face it, the 2.7's were not exactly considered a high point of 911 design.

Actually, year for year the 928 was as fast as almost anything made anywhere in the world. If only they had made a turbo, it would be an absolute legend. Last edited by m21sniper; 03-25-2010 at 11:06 PM.. |

I'm one of those people who are opposite of a lot around here- I think that the 911's didn't come into prime until the 3 liter and then the 3.2's.
mid to late 80's were and still are what most people think of when they think of a 911. It's what was in the posters on my wall as a kid, and that's what counts, right? 930's and slantnoses. Sure, the build quality might not have been up to par with the early cars, but they defined a decade. Pastel suit jackets and cocaine.

To tell the truth, I'm probably getting bored with cars in general...just that the "we're sooo cool because we 'discovered' 911's" attitude kind of ticked me off.
Hell Sniper, your 928 is probably still faster than my Mustang...I'm electronically limited to 151....not that I've been anywhere near that. Get caught going over 100 anywhere in Oregon, it's a minimum $2,000 fine with a loss of license for a minimum of 30 days. Depending on the mood of the cop and the judge, it can also mean jail time & loss of car.

Actually in a way, there were no "real" Porsche's BEFORE 1978.

Yes, the current 911 has always been a water cooled car. That's because the only thing shared between 996-on 911's and their air cooled predecessors is the name and some driveline similarities. Clean sheet design, the 996 was, using the most of modern CAD/CAE tools and materials, and building on watercooling engine technology used in 962's and such by Porsche for the prior 15 years or more. When Porsche introduces a new model, it's never done wrong. Even with their goddamned SUV- it's frowned upon by the purists, but the engineering is still porsche- the best offering of the SUV world.

If Ferry were alive, I'd have a hard time believing that he wouldn't mind claiming... oh.. say a new GT3- as a product of his and his father's company. It's a world class sportscar. That's what Porsches were supposed to be.

In a quarter mile you'd destroy me. A twisty back road would be interesting though. A 2900lb, 300rwhp, lowered 928 with the optional Bilstein/Eibach/LSD suspension is no joke at all in the curves. I scared the snot out of myself earlier tonight on Henry ave (very curvy local road) in my 928. Was my first outing of the season in it, i've been driving a little 5 speed 2004 Saturn i picked up cheap at the auction. Needless to say, going from a little Saturn to a decidedly un-street legal 928 is ONE BIG MASSIVE FKING RUSH! ![]() ![]() ![]() Nothing like getting sideways in the twisties in a big V-8 powered Porsche Note: Not spinning out and crashing ass end first if you decide to change throttle settings or brake mid curve is a nice treat too! ![]() Last edited by m21sniper; 03-25-2010 at 11:30 PM.. |

It was the 928. It was featured prominently in some of THE movies that defined that decade. I fell in love with the 928- and Kelly LeBrock!- the first time i ever saw Weird Science. And who can ever forget the 928 "Porsche, there is no substitute" or "Who's the U boat captain?" scenes from Risky Business? Or the "I want the scanners for the flying saucers," 928 car buying scene in the greatest crime flick of all time- Scar face. To me, the cars of the 80s will always be: Lambo Countach Ferrari Testarosa Porsche 928 Buick Grand National Mustang GT Last edited by m21sniper; 03-25-2010 at 11:32 PM.. |

That's the best thing ever-
Every year, come september/october I start wishing I had a turbo. Then I put the car up for the winter and drive an '89 Toyota Corolla coupe for a few months, with all of 100 HP. Lots of time spent at full throttle, waiting. Then the Porsche comes back out, and it's like being in a rocket. Incredibly satisfying.

Yeah i had a gigantic poo eating grin on my face.
![]() BTW, a 928S4 in well sorted shape is probably THE best possible bang for your buck in performance cars in the world today. $10-12k for a mint condition 316hp 170mph beast. Crazy! ![]() 928S4 Last edited by m21sniper; 03-25-2010 at 11:37 PM.. |

I grew up loving musclecars. Years ago, when I started making decent money, I'd decided that I was going to get something nice. I was thinking, a decent older Chevelle or something, then drop in a crate motor, new brakes and suspension. I also considered finding a mid 90's Impala SS. I'd still like to have an old muscle car like I described above. But one day while waiting for a flight out of LAX, I picked up the Aug issue of Excellence with the buyer's guide for 3.0 and 3.2L 911s. That was it. From that point on, I don't think I looked back.
I still love the looks, sounds and smells of classic detroit iron, but when you can have something that excels at acceleration, stopping and cornering....
