Porsche Crest

Not because of the weight of the RUF bumpers Paul.
I wanted fiber fenders aswell and decided to go with the early ones because i liked the look better. I think the weight is about the same on both type of bumpers.

Cheers,

Ed

Nice job everyone!

I have concidered backdating my "updated" 72T but it seems to me it will cost a fortune... I love the classic 911s but I also like the carrera flares that is mounted on my car. I'm thinkin about replacing that but-ugly reflector and bumper with something in the old style, but where can I fint a early-style bumper (in fiber glass i guess) that will fit if I keep the flares? Anyone have any warnings or suggestions?

This is how the car look today (almost anyway....)

fahlen, you should be able to bolt on fiberglass bumpers, hood, and bumpers. Front latching of the hood can simply be done with RS/RSR hold downstraps. THe flares do not need to be touched. Make sure you get rear a bumper for the right flare size. For you, the 73RS rear bumper is what will work. Lots of venders out there for the f-glass parts. Call TRE and they'll have all the parts you need.

Now! WHo's seen the latest Excellence? Our "curtissa's" car is features in the Sept 2004 issue. One of my inspirations for the backdate.

Can we talk a little theory?

Let's say I get the front half of a 69-73 fender (rusty, so it's not good to anyone). I cut off the turn signal housing and horn box. I would then weld on a sheet metal flange to allow it to be bolted to a 78SC front fender. This is how it would work, correct?

Fact is, I want to remove weight. I love the RUF/IROC rear bumper, but the front bumpers just don't do it for me. I do, however, love the 69-73 look. The backdate looks like a similiar amount of work, with a larger weight loss. Fiberglass bumpers and fiberglass hood is an easy 100 lb weight loss, if my guesstimate is correct.

If you can get the turn signal housing installed on the stock fender, it seems like the backdate is pretty easy (I already have SC flares). Question is do I have to renounce SCWDP membership???

Jurgen you can do that sure ! but a pair of even rusty 911 fenders wont come cheap. You will change your sc fenders in the backdate so you can,t turn back. Why not get the fiber fenders as well ? more weightloss and just a little bit more money i think. I paid about 450 $ for a pair of fenders the same i will get for my carrera fenders if i sold them second hand.

Jurgen,

Damon at Series 900 is working on a kit to do about what you described using fiberglass. We talked about that a bit in this thread earlier.

If you look back in this thread, you'll also see the reference to an article where a steel section was welded onto the fenders of a shorthood car.

There are many routes you can take to backdate a short hood. I wish I had started with an original SC tub. It would have been much easier than doing the flares all the work I have to do. A nice SC or Carrera can be backdated within a weeks time if you have the parts and a body shop to match the new parts to your paint.

UPDATE The lightbox/fender extensions are done and mounted on RCM's car, Also Long hood with short hood inner structure that maintains stock location of hood latch. very pleased with results. Will have a package consisting of hood, L& R light/horn grille/fender extensions, S front bumper, RS rear bumper, all bolt on with no cutting /welding. This will fit 74+ 911's .

Picture loaded fine.
There is an error in the url for the picture.
Go back and edit it.
Just before the "911prototype+" there is a space.
Delete it and it should work.

wtf for ?
Bodywork is a cool subject.. and I think it belongs here?
I like doing bodywork good enough for the snap-on rig to pull you over so he can look art it.. it's easy, it's doable, it's cheap.
and fwiw you can do car show jobs if you have the patience for the work.. just don't make the same mistake twice.

Looks great Damon ! very smart part indeed this is what holds a lot of people back from backdating the car. Rick thanks for the pictures your car will look awesome when finished i,m sure I agree with Ronin this thread is about backdating so this piece surely belongs here.
