hydraulic does not make any difference, small block chevies have had Hyd cams since the 50's but they still have flat tappets and need zddp.
If you have roller cams...as opposed to flat tappets then you do not need the zddp.

I use 20/50 year round but even when it freezes outside my engine block in the garage is usually in the mid 50's temp wise.....always warms during the day so not an issue...if it were outside I'd lower my viscosity.

In 1992 Porsche factory fill on all models was 5w40 (Shell)
In 1996 Porsche aligned with Mobil 1 and revised oil viscosity chart recommendations to include using synthetic oils.... Dino 15w40 or synthetic 5w40.
In 2001 Porsche approved using 0w40 or 5w40 synthetic engine oil for all Porsche models 1973 to 1998.

Rotella T6 5w40 has a good dose of ZDDP: see the virgin oil analysis Rotella T6 5W-40 manufactured 01/27/12

This is all a lot to understand. I have been looking at the Rotella T-6 for my 993 as a change from Mobil1 but it is advertised as for diesel engines. How does this change the oil properties?

looks like T-6 sounds pretty good, no worries about the diesel engine label

Rotella oil

Rotella is stout stuff. I'm just about to change it in my 993, about 7k on the oil, and will post a new Blackstone report. Here is my older report.
Our 993 is my wife's daily driver and her commute is 3 miles, one way, so it never really warms up. I changed from 15-50 Mobil1, with high wear levels, for that reason.
Cheers,
Jess

Mobil1 20-50

Can I use Mobil 1 20-50 synthenic motorcycle oil in my 1989 911 or is there Mobil 1 synthenic for air cooled engines. I've been reading all the post about what types of oils to use but there is so many choices

I use Mobil 1 20-50 V-twin oil in an air cooled v-twin. I do not know how well it would work in Porsche engines though.

I've found Mobil 1 15W50 to be easily available and has ZDDP of 1200 PPM. Any reason it shouldn't be used? Its cold pour point is -39C.

New owner, first oil change. 79' 911 SC. Location: CT. Current Temp Range: 30's-70's, Summer temp range: 40-100. Ive decided to use either Swepco or BP 15W40 or 20W50. Any recommendation on those combinations? The car also leaks oil once warmed up to hot. for this purpose I was thinking 20W50, but read that 15W40 is better with keeping oil temps consistently lower. Any suggestions?
Also cant decide on either of the brand.

Either brand is fine. Buy the one that is availabe or suits your wallet.

Here in Oregon we have similar weather, I run, 20W-50 year round.

sure, one more: http://www.nonlintec.com/sprite/oils_and_zddp.pdf the idea is to inform everyone of the problem, as you can see, it effects many engines foreign and domestic.

Thanks for the link J. Brown. I live in a very rural area and don't have access to a variety of oils, as a matter of fact the only 20/50 I can find is NAPA brand 20/50 packaged at Ashland Oil (same as Valvoline). I have Swepco oil improver, do you think I'll be ok to use the NAPA oil with the addition of the Swepco (in proper ratio of course)? Otherwise I'll order a case of appropriate oil on line.

From my experience 15w-40 was perfect for my street driven car in a cooler climate. If you plan on tracking, or when temps get above 80, then 20w-50 may offer better protection. Keep in mind that an SC will run hotter than my carburetted 2,5.
I have also found that for me it is not cost effective to run synthetic in my air cooled cars. At least in my car, the oil starts to look dirty after about three thousand miles, so I would change it anyway. That being said, if your car's oil temps get much over 220, then synthetic may be a good choice for you.

type of oil is better than weight of oil, remember, all oil is just about the same weight at engine operating temp (180˚F) so weight of oil only pertains to cold oil flow. Get the best oil you can find

Best oil

Agree on getting the best oil. You can order SWEPCO direct from SWEPCO or order through a local representative of the company.
SWEPCO in my opinion is the best out there. They will ship you your first order of a minimum case for free. Subsequent orders and you have to pay shipping.
If you get a group together, and get the amount ordered to over $500, shipping is free. I do a yearly order for friends and myself. This year the order was over $2000.
If you order more than 10 cases, you get a free case as well. With the free delivery it is a great deal for the best oil there is.

I orignailly said.. "I have no idea what is in SWEPCO oil improver but it is doubtful it will raise the ZDDP level in an oil, more likely a viscosity additive." I looked it up in the SWEPCO Website (http://www.swepcolube.com/products/swepco-502-engine-oil-improver). It does raise Zinc by 175 ppm when you add 1 pint to to 5 quarts. Plus it adds Moly.

IMHO, you can get to the same place by mail ordering a decent oil or get Dino Valvoline VR-1 oil (Valvoline.com > Products > Racing > Racing Motor Oil Racing > VR1 Racing Oil (VR1)). Most FLAPS will be able to get it or you.
