CHT = cylinder head temperature; usually much higher than the oil temperature; commonly measured at the base of a spark plug with a thermocouple

Moon Plates - a double hole, elongated, thick washer or spacer used on certain 911 constant velocity (CV joints)

Schnorr Washers - a lock washer with sharp edges made in a concave shape (when viewed on edge). They may be a type of Belleville washer or may be only similar to them (not sure if that was ever settled). They were used on certain 911 CV joints.

Many think both the above should be added to the later 911 CV joints (which left them out, perhaps for cost cutting). Slightly longer bolts (cap screws) would be needed and these are a 12.9 high-strength fastener.

No new acryonym - just a clarification: The Belleville washers that I ordered for my car (because it seemed like a good idea, given the advice on this forum) were manufactured by a company called Schnorr. So I suspect the terms are interchangeable. I ordered these (and tons of other stuff, it's been crazy) from McMaster-Carr. They have a warehouse in Cleveland so I get all my stuff the next day. (Find a worn or just an annoyingly 30 year old and dirty fastener and have 20 more like it the next afternoon for $8. Good stuff.) Cheers, Scott

Internet Abbreviations are in another thread - thiss one is for Porsche mechanical ones.

R&P = ring and pinion -- the thing in the big back housing of the transmission that transforms rotation along the longitudinal axis (from the motor) into lateral rotation (for the wheels)

CWP = Crown Wheel & Pinion - same as R&P, above

One that we have all experienced while working on our cars,

SNAFU = Situation Normal All Fu*ked Up. This is the original definition from World War II.

The modern press has tried to clean it up to Situation Normal All Fouled Up. I laugh every time I hear a news anchor on TV say something like "A major SNAFU in traffic today"

BAR = well, I don't know the acronym, but it stands for one unit of pressure equal to the force of the earth's atmosphere at sea level, and translates to about 14.5 to 14.7 psi.

PSI=pounds per square inch, a unit of pressure.

ICV=idle control valve, the bane of many 3.2 911 owners.

PCAR=I hate this one. I'm not going to translate for you guys.

druck pres=oil pressure. Did someone already cover this?

SAE=Society of Automotive Engineers. Randy already covered SAE HP. These guys set many of the standards that we use to measure stuff. Sometimes we refer to SAE vs. Metric, in which case we are drawing a distinction between English or Standard bolt sizes vs. Metric bolt sizes.

ISO=International Organization for Standardization. This should be IOS right? I'll bet they're Frenchie or something. When we refer to ISO rating of 12.9 it means we are specifying a bolt strength rating, rather than just saying "aircraft grade". It's better to quantify these things, and sometimes you want the strongest bolt you can get. Usually ISO 8.8 is what we use on Porsches.

O2=oxygen

CO2= carbon dioxide

HCO=hydrocarbon

PET= I don't know this one. It refers to Porsche's parts inventory system, that's all I know.

POS=anything from either Weltmeister or Harbor Freight Tools. Ok, not their airtools, but certainly their welders, wrenches, and electric dye grinders.

The late, great Harry Pellow always used a unit of measure in his writings:

BCH= blonde c*nt hair = .001" (if I remember correctly)

Schnorr washer (often mis-spelled Schnoor, or Shorr, or Shoor - use these terms in the search engine to find add'l threads beyond the ones with the correct spellin)

A "Schnorr" washer is a hardened steel, ribbed or serrated Belleville-type spring washer. It is used for fastener locking purposes. The ones on the CV joints should be replaced every time you dis-assemble the joint.

ROW = Rest of the World, as opposed to U.S. Market (the latter often includes Canada)

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market

WUR = Warm-Up Regulator, an integral part for the success of a CIS (continuous injection system) fuel injection system

AAR = Automatic Air Regulator - another CIS component

What does the `J` denote, as in 7J Fuchs wheels? Are different types/styles represented by other letters?

Thanks, Mike.
