What is the fastest drop Engine time did you guys have?

Ok...I know its not a 911 but at the old Bug In in the 70s-80s there was an engine pull contest,

You started with a running VW bug , pull the engine , move it away from the car then re-install it , start it up and drive it 10-20 feet across the "finish" line

total time with 2 people .......less than 5 minutes !

Three years and it still isn`t dropped. Still reading up on it it doesn't`t use oil and all is running well ,so don`t touch what is not broken (Yet).

15 years ago at the track, I shredded a clutch disc.

With another's help, I removed the engine (2.7 MFI), replaced the disc and reinstalled the engine all in about 3 hrs time.
Made the 2nd practice session that morning.

Very satisfying, but very tired after that!

Well it's just an old manual lift and fits exactly between the two bumperettes
of the 964RS rear bumper

We place wooden blocks between the engine and the forks to get the angle
to remove the engine.

1966 912, in my driveway with a floor jack, engine and trans out in 45 minutes. Did it twice in a week. Of course, I was 30 years younger then!

About 30 minutes...but its a 935. No jacking the car up, just remove the access panel where the rear seat used to be, disconnect the drive shafts, tranny, linkage, throttle, fuel, etc, pull the tail off, unbolt the cross member and slide everything out the back on a pallet jack. race cars are so much easier to work on.

by saying "unbolt the cross member" I met removing part circled in white on picture (sorry not the best pic that I could find quick).

Am I correct?

Back in the 70s my brother wanted to change the cam in his VW camper. He drove it to the shop, dropped the engine, took it completely apart to get to the cam. Drop in the new cam and build the engine. He never hurried and even stopped for lunch. He drove home that same day in time for dinner. He did all the work by himself.

The problem i see with engine removal if you dont have a lift is getting the back end high enough to get the engine under the back bumper .. and if you do the car is at such an extreme angle that putting the engine back or even taking it out might be tough ..

Do you guys remove the rear bumper ? and if not is r/r more difficult because of the angle of the car ?

Yes, cut out that part of the chassis and replace it with a tubular cross member thats bolted to the frame rails. supports the engine and everything slides right out the back!

I removed and installed the engine without removing the bumper.
I jacked the car as high as I could after I unbolted the mounts. Once the fan cleared I pulled the motor out.
On installation once I raised the car I slid the engine in place then lowered the car. Then all I had to do was raise the motor into place.
