^I've done various low carb consistently diets since 2016. Paleo, Keto, Carnivore. All my health issues went away and I lost 20 lbs before regaining 20lbs of muscle (with exercise). I'm as strong and healthy as ever.

I've researched this extensively and the article above is highly misleading if not wrong on several points. The risk of keto is minimal for most, including for diabetics that are adjusting their insulin (down). I won't say that some people don't have issues, particularly those that are already very metabolically unhealthy or have certain food allergies. But in general, it's very safe and the ability to maintain the diet depends on the person.

The research into this is pretty fascinating and the latest studies are now suggesting that a high fat, modest protein, very low carb diet is best for weigh loss for a couple reasons including 1) true ketogenic diets actually increase metabolism while also 2) reducing appetite. That's a powerful weigh loss combo.

But for low carb muscle gains, a carnivore diet is better than keto thanks to the extra protein, but note that weight loss is likely slower. I bulk on carnivore and cut on keto.

I love eating meat. With all the fat and extra butter. Mmmmmm

Most people who do Keto understand healthy eating, staying away from simple carbs as much as possible, while eating plenty of vegetables, and eating a moderate amount of proteins and healthy fats - like avocadoes and olive oil, for example. They understand limiting calorie intake to reasonable levels and getting some exercise. As mentioned earlier, eating Keto should be an occasional process, probably not done as a permanent lifestyle choice. However, once away from Keto, the basic tenets of healthy eating and lifestyle remain.

For me, I'm doing it right now to drop the extra 15-20 pounds I put on over the last five years due to my habit of having two IPA's pretty much every early evening. Beer, especially IPA, is famous for creating that belly fat, and I was tired of it, so I pretty much stopped drinking beer and went back on the keto diet for a while to help shed the fat. I'll go off of it when I drop another 5-8 pounds or so.

I think you guys are both 100% right. What works for one may not work for another. But I will say that I don’t believe a single thing posted online or in the media about any of these diets. Big food and big pharma want you fat eating processed foods and full of medications for your heart disease and blood pressure. They don’t want you eating locally grown produce, locally sourced meat, exercising, and losing weight naturally. Diets like keto and really all forms of healthy clean eating take money out of their pockets, and they will absolutely issue false claims to deter people from making positive change.

This. So much fear mongering. God forbid we ate something that didn't come in a box and actually were healthier (and did not need medicines) as a result.

With my recent cardiac condition, I decided to change my ways.

Cholesterol has never run high in my family.
I did the unthinkable.
I went on majority - steak only - diet.
Ride my bike a crapload.

Steak a day keeps the Dr. away....

Dropped 20 pounds overall since may, but gained muscle...So effectively lost much more than 20 lbs fat, gained mucho muscle.
I Am Adonis!!!!

So. heart condition still hit or miss.

results- as a cholesterol resistant genetic dude-
Total steak diet-
I was able to discontinue 15 years of all blood pressure meds and am now med free.
I just rode up a mountain with one fake hip, and one broken heart, to the exact point, one minute slower than 20 years ago.
I consider that a success.

Heart still don't beat right but big pharma just lost a customer.

Play to your strengths.

YMMV....

For me it's about moderation and a low carb/Keto style diet curbs my appetite.

Also... Try avoiding food when you're bored. Do something other than eating. Walking works for me.

Relationships play a huge part in our lives. Keep your best people close. Be present and someone fun to be around.

Well I lost another 3.8 lbs over the last week, and that was with a weekend of travel and eating out. So that’s 12.6 lbs over two weeks. Mentally I had the goal of losing 3 lbs per week, I’m happy so far. I suspect I may lose a little less each week, that seems to be the norm.

Do you have an easy way to share what you ate over those two weeks? Not what you avoided, but what you bought at the supermarket.
I’m sure someone has built an app for this, but a meal plan with an API to a supermarket for the week’s provisions would be perfect. Just show up and grab your pre-filled order. We did Hello Fresh when no kids were at school (they actually ship the raw foods with a recipe card) but now that two are back it’s “Hell-ish Expensive”

I’m using an app called Carb Manager that I really like, but it doesn’t have an export feature. Pretty basic stuff overall, mostly meat, veggies, and salads that don’t have carbs on them. For instance yesterday I was traveling and had bacon and eggs for breakfast, a Caesar salad (no crotons) with chicken and some deviled eggs for lunch, and some salami and pepperoni with cheese for dinner. I also typically have a whiskey nightcap. The app helps a LOT for staying on track. They offer planned meals but you have to pay for that feature.

For those that had success with this diet, did you have some upticks in weight at times? I made it down from 225 to 208 over the span of a month, but have now gained about one pound each of the last two weeks. Eating the same stuff, no carbs, well under 2,000 calories average daily. I haven’t cheated! Really my only indulgence is having a bourbon at night, but I’ve been doing that since starting the diet and bourbon is zero carb.

Occasional upticks can, and do occur. If your diet has not changed at all, then did you change anything else (eg activity level). For me mine would creep up if I lessened my activity level. Just reaffirm your diet and exercise/ activity.
Btw, congrats on losing 17 lbs in a month ! Keep it up you are doing great !

Yes. Upticks and plateaus happen. And [any] booze is the quickest way for me to gain weight. A boozy reunion weekend with The Boyz is a instant 5 lbs easy. But it appears to be mostly water weight and comes off in a week or so with recovery.

Also, if you're eating more protein and/or working out, that can also keep your weight higher, but your body composition will improve.

Its weird, but it seems that for real weight loss/fat reduction, eating higher fat, low protein, and low/zero carbs (including alcohol) is best. But if you're looking to build muscle, upping the protein works wonders.

In my journey starting as a skinny-fat guy, I dropped 20 lbs relatively quickly, but then gained it back as muscle in subsequent years. So I weigh slightly more now (8 years later) than when I started, but the body shape is totally different.

I have had some work travel over the last two weeks, so the normal walks I take with my wife have been reduced. I’m going to stay the course and see what happens!

I’m on Keto and I have found that my weight will vary about 1-2 pounds through the day, which is clearly from the amount of water I consume through the day. I’ll be my lightest in the morning before I have my coffee and gain 1-2 pounds as the day goes on.

I try to hop on the scale every morning before I drink my coffee (or anything, actually), so that I get a more accurate reading, not to mention consistency.

My recommendation is to stop drinking alcohol. Weight, sleep, stress and irritability, all will improve significantly. Daily alcohol intake is terrible for you.

Headed for Seattle this coming weekend. Chowder in a bread bowl is on my list!
