Tales like these make you wonder how some dealerships stay in biz. Dan, too bad your Dad's story didn't happen today...he could have ended up owning the dealership with the right lawyer...

Yeah, I suppose that's true.
Its a funny thing, my dad had a huge chip on his shoulder for how he/we were treated and yet he "bought" the idea that we were somehow inferior or something - we never went out to dinner until I was in high school, never went to the movies, he did everything to try to avoid attracting attention to himself. Odd the crippling that kind of treatment does to people. Oh well, Hispanic people are held in high regard now!

One of my wife's ex-manager's used to work at a car dealership. He told us a story once of a particular Christmas Eve.
Homeless guy walks into the dealership. Everyone ignores him, and people are asking him to leave. OF course he can't afford a car, he's dressed in rags! Well..Manager is the only guy that's decent to this guy. It's freezing outside, he offers coffee. The guy is tired, he offers for him to sit in one of the cars. Very nice to the guy. People are telling him to get rid of the homless guy. Homeless guy bought the car, cash on the spot. |

Then there is this LV story about a Gas Station attendant driving from St George to LV who picks up this old bum on the side of the highway...

I had been having a bad car month. One of those periods when anything that can go wrong on a car does. I decided I had had enough and was buying a new car.
In the Porsche dealership I saw the exact car I wanted a nearly new 993. I politely waited while the only salesman explained to the only other customer that the new Boxster they had next to the 993 had the exact same engine and chassiss as the 993! The gentleman left saying he needed to pick up his car from the service department and get on his way home. He gave me a look that guaranteed he understood what a fool the salesman was. I started the conversation by asking the salesman the asking price. He told me and walked off, leaving me waiting like a lemon for 10 minutes when I gave up and left. I was wearing nondescript clothes and the only car in their customer parking was the borrowed 996 I arrived in. I could have written a cheque for the car there and then and I was seriously interested in it - lost sale.

I purchased a new car two years ago (only my 2nd new car, I usually buy second hand). In the process of test driving cars I settled on a particular make/model largely through internet research. I wanted to drive the car before I actually bought one however...
At the first dealership I went to, the salesman suggested I come back later when my husband was with me ... On to the next dealership where I test drove a car, arranged a dealer trade for the color I wanted and financed (sorry guys - no big cashola) all in less than 45 minutes with my own credit thank you very much. Just to be a stinker, I did take it in to the first dealership for service once, you know, just to say "hi" to the salesman! angela

Not all dealers are like that...
I ALWAYS a T-shirt and jeans. One day I was wasting time at the P-car dealer and there was a CGT in the window. I was looking at it when all of a sudden one of the salesman came up and asked me if I wanted to test drive it. I smiled to him and he replied that he was serious... I declined because it was 5pm, rush hour traffic and I would have not enjoyed... |

A lot of dealers are doing sales over the Internet, you still have to go down to the lot and go through their dog and pony show but at least you can get them to quote you a price through email.
Then you just have to go through them trying to sell you something else and dicking you around about financing.

After a quick review of the posts here, I am surprised to not see the story of the purchase of one of the most famous Porsches of all time. Janis Joplin's psychedelic ragtop 356. She used to carry cash. It was lots easier than trying to use checks. In all fairness she didn't appear to be the archtype of the typical Porsche owner. Her "purse" resembled a soft suitase with a shoulder strap. I think she could have put a sleeping bag in it. Probably did.
Anyway, she went to a dealership to buy a Porsche and nobody would help her. Ultimately she became so frustrated she screamed while dumping her purse onto the floor. There were plenty of stacks of hundreds, which was a lot of money in the late sixties. They finally noticed her. The rest is history. I assume you guys have seen photographs of the car. Here is one, except that I think it is a repro.

My brother and I were talking about this the other day. I had 2 very different experiences. 22 years old, a factory worker, jeans, t-shirt, just came from work. Stopped at a Porsche dealer, simply to ask about 928 info. I had looked at one on a used car lot, and wanted to know more about them. Nobody else was in the place, and I had 3 salesmen looking up factory info, showing me a 968, just being really cool. They dropped everything and spent an hour with a guy who was not in the market for a new Porsche, and plainly told them so.
A couple of years ago, I dropped in at a BMW dealer, was interested in a 3 series. 4 salesmen, I was the only customer, and could not get 1 guy to talk to me. My brother and I decided the difference was the manager's attitude toward hiring people. The Porsche manager probably hired enthusiasts, the BMW manager probably hired motivated, quota-hungry salesmen. I think the Porsche manager had the right idea. Most people who stop at a Porsche dealership aren't comparison shopping for a new car, they want a Porsche. Those 2 experiences made impressions on me of the respective brands.

I disagree with some of what is posted here.
I would suspect that if a Porsche dealership had 10 scruffy looking customers walk in at the same time as 1 well dressed customer, the smart money will be on the well dressed customer. While it may be true that people do not "comparison shop" a Porsche against a Hyundai, there are a lot of looky-loos who just like to daydream. A salesman has to sell cars to earn his commission - and helping some vagrant with his automotive wetdream doesn't pay the bills. Besides, this thread seems really contradictory here... people in one thread saying they shouldn't be judged by what they wear to the high end car dealerships, while in other threads saying "look at me, look at me - i have brand x pocket knife, brand y watch, and the latest kitchen gizmo"

I am sure he would have checked my credit reports had I said yes, but his attitude was nice. Another time I went in to ask if they had a cheap 996 (a stop gap until the 3.9 was ready and before I bought the 993) and spoke with another salesman about 911s for 1 hour. Well the guy is a PCA member and drives an 87 Carrera. And for him the 993 was the best ever 911.... The Parts guys here are the best. Once I was at VIR for a 3 day event. On Friday the dist cap on the 3.6 broke. I called the dealer and they had one in stock. I talked to the parts guys, explained the situation and that I was going to drive down from VIR to pick up the part that evening. They waited 30 mins after closing time for me so that I could get back on the track the next day. Not all Porsche dealers are a**holes. Last edited by 911teo; 12-28-2006 at 07:37 AM.. |
