Update on Jaime's recovery
SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 2009 11:23 PM, CST
Jaime had another good day. The pressures stayed low. She had her eyes open for quite awhile. Not sure what she sees. Sometimes it seems she is looking at us other times not. They might do an EEG on her to make sure she isn't having seizures. We continue to ask for more prayers for her ventricles to shrink in size and we continue forward. Thank you Deb & Kurt

SUNDAY, JANUARY 18, 2009 09:00 PM, CST
Today when we got to the hospital they were doing an EEG and than a CT scan. The EEG and her symptoms lead them to believe she is having seizures so they started her on another medication for them. We still haven't heard the results of the CT scan. Hopefully tomorrow. She was more still today and didn't open her eyes much. Keep your thoughts and prayers coming. Deb & Kurt MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 2009 09:03 PM, CST They are still trying to get the seizures under control. The neurologist had another CT Scan run and added another medication to control the seizures. She is off the respirator all the time now. Tomorrow the neurosurgeon is planning on taking the drain out and not putting in a permanent shunt. They are planning on moving her to either pulmonary unit or neuro-acute in a few days. This all makes me nervous as the patient to nurse ratio is 5-1. She also gets moved back to a regular bed as she has been on an air bed for most of her stay. We are starting to research rehabilitation hospitals so if anyone has any recommendation. Our goal is to help get Jaime back into pharmacy school. We appreciate all your posts especially from all over the world. They are a great help to us. It is amazing how connected we all are. Pray without ceasing! Deb & Kurt TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2009 11:00 AM, CST Please pray that Jaime gets into the Madonna Rehabilitaion Hospital in Lincoln. They have been contacted. TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2009 09:40 PM, CST The drain was taken out today and Jaime finally got her hair washed! Pray that all goes well now that the drain is out. I worry about possible bleeding again. We are told that she will be going to the Neuro-acute unit as soon as a room opens up. Representative from Madonna Rehab Hospital will be there tomorrow to evaluate Jaime. Please pray about that. We are also looking into a few more hospitals. Thanks for all you do. Kurt & Deb

Jaime was accetped at the Madonna rehab hospital. http://www.madonna.org/ We plan on visiting there on Saturday. She might be going next week. Today the nurses set her in a chair for about 1 1/2 hours. Keep praying that everything keeps moving forward. I am always afraid something might happen. And continue to pray that her pupil in her left eye goes down. Deb FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2009 04:15 PM, CST Got to the hospital later than usual today. Jaime is in the chair for the second time today. The Neuro surgeon wants to talk to us, after he looked at the CT scan and I am told he wants to put a shunt in. He is in surgery right now with another patient. Bummer! Hope it doesn't slow up her transfer to Madonna Rehab. Keep praying! This all so intense! We will be visiting Madonna Saturday morning. Thanks again for all your entries in the guestbook which helps us carry on. Deb & Kurt FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2009 08:49 PM, CST The neuro surgeon finally came by to talk to us about 8:00. He says the CT scan shows that the ventrical are still increasing in size even though it is a tiny amount. He thinks she is producing slightly more fluid than her brain can circulate out due to adhesions that developed from the injury to the brain. And he is concerned that if we send her to Madonna without the shunt she might develop complications and have to be tranported back here to have the shunt put in. Please pray that we make the right decision as we have the final say. And if anyone has any thoughts that would help us make our decision please let us know. We will talk to him on Sunday. Thanks again Kurt & Deb

All we have for today is she sat up two times again and her pupil was more responsive today. So far we are planning on going ahead with the shunt though we still wish we wouldn't have to. We are expecting a call from Madonna Hospital tomorrow. Please pray the surgery goes well tomorrow afternoon, that her lungs stay clear, and that we continue to move forward. Thanks always, Deb & Kurt MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2009 06:05 PM, CST I am told the surgery went well and I am sitting in her room in neuro acute waiting for her to come back from the recoevry room. Everything moves so slow around here!I waited with her in the pre-op room for an hour. She was looking around for about half of the time we were waiting. Not sure yet when she will be able to go to the Madonna rehab. Maybe the end of the week. Pray again that we continue to move forward and that she doesn't develop anymore blood clots as the heparin is turned off for awhile because of the surgery. Also include that the shunt works with no complications. God Bless Deb TUESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2009 09:12 PM, CST Today, Jaime was more on the sleepy side. She did look at Kurt when he came. They will restart the heparin tomorrow so I am still worried about the blood clots but they have to wait because of the surgery. She is scheduled to go to Lincoln on Thursday by ambulance. See if we stick to this plan as things are constantly changing. Continue praying. Deb & Kurt

We are still on for Jaime going to Madonna Rehab tomorrow at 10:30. I plan to follow the ambulance. Kurt will come down Friday night. Today, Jaime had a quiet day. She had her eyes open alot and looked at us once in awhile. They took her off some more of her medication. Pray that things go as planned, as they usually don't and as always that we continue to move forward. Always, Deb & Kurt

doctors will tell you the worst case scenario and will downplay the best.
Prayer and a dynamic family or friend riding herd on their procedures is important. They are more interested is establishing a track record than a personal relationship on what's best for her. Don't trust any of them no matter how much they sweet talk. Maybe start with researching your state brain damaged organization. For instance, "XXX Brain Injury Association" Get someone who thinks like a forensic CPA. The 1st year of rehab will set the stage on how she will adjust to this injury for the rest of her life. It's more important to get her to the best than be accessible locally to family. As soon as she's cognitive think of this as raising a new baby.

Jaime is at "On With Life" which is a residential care facility in Iowa. She continues to make progress although her recovery is a marathon and not a sprint. Deb(her mother) is with her daily and is a big part of her daily activities. Kurt commutes from South Dakota on weekends to be with them. Jaime's injuries were severe and she has a long journey to return to her life as it was before the accident but she is getting excellent care and the love and support of her family and more people than she ever imagined. Kurt called a couple weekends back to say Thank You for the prayers and good wishes that have been expressed here on Pelican.
Deb makes daily entries in the CaringBridge journal to keep everyone up to date. One can only be impressed and touched by the strength and courage this family has demonstrated in this very difficult time in their lives. Feel free to stop by the CaringBridge guestbook and leave a message. Jaime gets a big boost when her mom reads the messages from it to her. Thanks for Asking!

It's been nearly a year and a half to the day that Jamie had her accident. Kurt called today to let me know she spoke her first word since her accident. He said her motor skills are improving and she is getting quicker in her thought process and intereactions.
It's a long road to recovery but she continues to improve. Thanks all for the prayers and kind thoughts.

God bless her and her parents.
My son is never going to improve and I know first hand the daily heartbreak, frustration, pain, anger that comes from watching the dreams you had for your kids suffer or die. It is the hardest thing outside of losing a child that anyone will ever have to do. Any improvement after an injury like this is a miracle and God bless them for their patience, love and understanding Steve

progress and family love is the envelope now
it's like being reborn all over including the relearning of everything even if it starts off with flashcards "Jamie. What's this?" "I don't know." "It's a cat." "Jamie. What's this?" "I don't know." "It's a car." "Jamie. What's this?' "I don't know." "It's a cat." is still progress and needs the continued patience of the care giver and the continual exercise of the mind for as much as Jamie can take chance are once this learning starts that in 1 year it'll be like night and day But if she stares at a tv 8hrs/day that's backtracking. Don't let that happen may all the strength in the world be with them all
