It's not exactly a "windows laptop" issue. Macs will have the same problem. Nor does the laptop need to be high end to solve the issue. More than likely, Dave's laptop has an integrated video card. This is the problem. MacBook Air's will have the same problem, since they run integrated cards as well.

My problems are not really laptop/windows related either. The GoPro can handle shooting in resolutions that no laptop that I know of can handle yet. To keep it simple... If you shoot a GoPro vid in 1080 mode, but your older laptop can only handle 1024x768, the laptop will need to re-compress the video on the fly to view on the lower resolution screen. That's where the problem comes in. The integrated video card cannot handle the conversion and the vid plays back jerky or not at all.

You can buy plenty of Windows based laptops that have add-on video cards ans it won't break the bank. One just has to spec that out before buying the best deal on the floor.

If I remember correctly the Macbook Air only has a USB port and a Power port so there is no way to even plug in a external display.

My Macbook Pro has 2 video cards built into the motherboard. One really fast one with higher resolution and a slower lower res one. It uses the slow card to save battery if on battery power, no external display, and are not running software that needs cranked up video. An external monitor defaults to the faster card because if you have an external monitor you are most likely running off AC power.

On my first Mac, it was a Mac 512 with built in grayscale monitor. In 1987 I had an external grayscale full page display that used the SCSI port. Was able to use the mac's display AND the external monitor at the same time. In fact, the Macintosh OS was capable of running multiple video cards and monitors at the same time LONG before Windows and the PC platform supported it.

In 1991 I did industrial videos and animation on a Mac Desktop Tower. It had 3 video cards and an Video card specifically for both input and output to TV and/or Video recorders. It was nice to have the screen space of 3 monitors and a TV to work with the video, video editing controls, animation and animation programming windows all at the same time.

In 1996 my HOME computer was a Mac Performa VEE. The VEE stood for Video Editing Edition. It was a mini tower that came from Apple with a video card for a monitor AND a video card for digitizing and outputting S Video it also had video editing software. This was when S Video was a good as it got.

So yeah, it's most likely the Apple component of your setup causing the problems.

My point on the MacBook Air, is that it has a built in card (Intel HD). They are great for general computing and some PS work, but fall short when it comes to monitor calibration - the cards can't store the calibration info.

And Rick, I have nothing against Linux, in fact I've had it on a few computers, but for video editing, more software is going to be suited for Mac than Linux.

Now, for a cheap computer just for browsing and every day BS, Linux is the ticket no doubt.

maybe i am wrong, probably so... but isn't video editing nearly entirely CPU dependent?

i mean, you need a video card to display the video and what was edited, but doesn't the CPU do all the work to make changes and such?

sorry, i call BS. download and install a copy of 'AV Linux'. you'll be amazed. and i am difficult to amaze, when it comes to computers.

It may be good D, but go to any place where tons of video editing is happening.... It will be highly Mac dominated.
