Yea, it was one of dad's favorites. He brought a huge stereo back from Japan in 1962. Very few people had ever heard of stereo back then, and woofers and tweeters were words most folks thought he made up. Since he was the pilot flying a C-124 back from Japan to Hawaii, they had lots of space to haul it back, no charge. I am sure it was inexpensive, everything in Japan was dirt cheap for Americans in the 1960s.
Dad would play some Jazz, and then as a demo to friends play the 1812 Overture and wake up the neighbors in Pearl City. In the end he bought a Wollensak tape recorder and recorded many long hours of music for the frequent parties Air Force officers where pretty much required to have.

Talked to the Proofpoint reseller Proofpoint sent me to.
He says their company and most accounts are going with FuseMail. And several changed to Proofpoint and then changed back to FuseMail. Now telling me that myself and 50 users in my domain get FuseMail protection Free and will only be charged for my resell domains, ie 7 users without zipbang.com email addresses. So is basically $7 a month or $84 a year. With CanIT was paying $0.7 /user/mo for 24 users, $16.8 /mo or $201.6 a year. Their spam service also changes any links in emails to go thru their service sandbox (web proxy) when you click them so you can't get viruses from visiting those links. Said they can also scan and route all outgoing email so if someone does pickup malware and start sending a bunch of spam the server won't get blacklisted. Told them that wasn't necessary because my ISP monitors that and blocks that users email and calls me before I get blacklisted. Has happened twice because a couple of my users refused to upgrade from Entourage and got hacked. Still waiting the hear from them to get setup.

In 1995 I got promoted to an office, and there on the desk was a computer.
I had never been that close to one before. The secretary showed me how to log on, showed me a few basics for word and excel and said have fun. About an hour later i called my wife and told her my computer was acting really weird and I thought that maybe I broke it. She said what's it doing? I said there are a bunch of different colored lines going around on the screen. She said that's a screen saver. Move you mouse. I said cool, thanks. Looking back, that would have made for one heck of an IT help ticket. |

I started using computers in 1970. Mainframes and keypunch machines. Coding in Fortran 4. Damn I'm old.

Have had access to computers, not including my programable HP calculator since 1976. It was the IBM modem link terminal my HS used for school board main frame. Had a whole 4K of space they let me use. There was no screen it was all done on paper. But you could call up and write programs in basic. There were only 3 of us that could use it.
Got access to our grades, etc, but didn't matter, changing them would have lowered our GPAs. Could have changed it but thought the record of being suspended over spring break my senior year was hilarious. Especially after they called my Dad at work the Friday afternoon before Spring Break and told him I was suspended for a week starting immediately giving him the dates of the week of Spring Break. When Dad called me about it I asked him if we were going on vacation the upcoming week repeating the dates, then he started laughing. Before that he was really pissed. Then he had to tell everyone that I had managed to get suspended from school for Spring Break.

LOL I have a similar story. The last day in my junior year at high school someone dared me to light a fire cracker. Hey they DARED me to do it. I got suspended for a week. But since it was the last day, the suspension was for the first week of my senior year. So when everyone else had to go back to school, I went surfing every morning and drove by the school on the way home. And honked. And waved. |

Was driving thru the teacher's parking lot at school. Had just let off the yearbook photographer and was back in line to get out of the lot when two streakers jumped in my car. The car behind me was full of asst principals and male teachers. Lost em but they got my tag.
They never took their masks off and didn't have any clothes in my car so when interrogated just told them these guys jumped in my car and told me to go or I would regret it. The told them I wouldn't give them up if I did know who the were but didn't cause the didn't take therr masks off. They got really pissed telling me I was in on it and was supposed to pick them up. I denied it. I was just dropping off a friend that had classes near there after lunch. Drove by inconspicuously (with the streakers on the floor boards) looking for the car that was supposed to pick them up and had their clothes. He was on the other side of the school where he was supposed to be, but the way he parked they would have gotten caught before he could get out of the parking lot. And there were spaces open that would have been perfect for a getaway. It was 45 minutes before he gave up and got far away enough from school we could flag him down. Somehow a picture was in the yearbook with two guys streaking by the school sign wearing nothing but track shoes and gorilla masks. Their junk AND across eyes of the gorilla masks were censored, hilarious. No telling who those gorillas were!

I bought my first computer, a real powerhouse, Commodore Vic 20. I knew before I brought it home that 4K was not enough RAM so I bought the 16K expansion card, so I was a power user. The expansion card would get HOT so I was a power user, of electricity. I had a cassette drive or storage. When the Commodore 64 came out I grabbed one. And a 300 baud modem that was manual dial. I soon realized the cassette drive was just painfully slow, so I bought a single sided 5.25 inch floppy drive.
But 1984 I bought a Compaq Luggable, because it was on sale. It only had twin floppies, 356K of RAM and DOS 2.1. I soon added the ram to bring it up to the max, 640K and a 10 MB hard drive, and a screaming fast 1200 baud modem. Over the years I bought a lot of parts and built a lot of computers. I would never believe that someday I would have CPUs like the i8 Intel, and 128 gig of RAM and 6 TB hard drives, and 24 TB RAIDS. The video card I have is a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with a total available graphics memory of 27614 MB or 27gig. I remember with dial-up we finally got to a point that one MB took "only" 12 minutes. That was fast. I just ran a speed test: 112.6 Mbps download; 8.92 Mbps upload; Latency: 11 ms It just astonishes me, I love it.

Mertnin,
Don't go enough places or spend enough to be in any kind of club or get any points that matter. Jeff, do you still stay in the honors club if you trash the room, rock star style? Remember my first 300 baud Apple modem. Accidentally send it ET instead of AT for ATtention it would respond "Phone Home." When I first setup the Mac servers for email, web, firewall if someone tried to login to a service that was not turned on the server would respond with "Service Not Available" in Klingon, "chavmoH wej lupoQ".

We have our annual Porsche club Christmas party tomorrow evening. I am auctioning off some Porsche stuff I have accumulated over the years, and the money goes to the Children's Center. Some of is cool stuff, that someone will enjoy.
I have a bunch of stuff I figure I will just donate as door prizes, just to same time. I get to clean out the closet a little. It is going to be a packing challenge to get it all in the 911.

If you don't think you will enjoy the xmas parties...
Entertain yourself as a close talker. As people back away a little, move closer. If they keep backing away, Lift your arm and take a big wiff of you underam, then say "Nope, not me" and/or Blow into your cupped hand and sniff it. Shrug your shoulders, and offer them a tic tac. also, when someone makes an attempt at humor, Laugh way too loudly, a little too much. It will be fun and help you get thru the parties this year, and just maybe get you invited to a few less next year

When having dinner with my brother and his kids and grankids when the grandkids were young...The kids were telling why did the chicken cross the road jokes. I asked why the mouse crossed the road. Then said, because it was stapled to the chicken. All the kids thought it was hilarious. One of my nieces said that was so inappropriate. Said okay, do-overs. Againn, why did the mouse cross the road. All the kids said because it was stabled to the chicken. I said no no no, that's just crewel going around stapling mice to chickens. It was taped to the chicken with low tack painter's tape so it could be removed without harming the mouse or the chicken! Everyone except the one niece laughed at that one.

I just tell everyone a bunch of lies to see what I can get away with. It ins't much fun because they generally believe me. Even when I tell them they are using gravity wrong.
