Glad that by the time I came around my family had moved into town and got their palatable meats chopped up by the butcher. Do understand everyone ate pretty good for a few days when a hog was butchered at home on the farm.

Still liked going to Aunt Lena, and Uncle Ralph Doolitle's farm. They raised and took their eatin animals to the butcher except for the fowl. The thing I liked was Aunt Lena cooked everything in cast iron and used lard they rendered. fThat made the best hot rolls I've ever had, they just melted in your mouth. And any leftovers from a previous meal, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, was put on the table with the fixins for the current meal.

Still don't understand why anyone would want to eat head cheese. Anything that starts with putting the animals head in a tub of water on the back porch for 3 days just doesn't sound good to me.

Stijn!!

I suspect someone near starvation would think head cheese is great. I plan to never find out.

Had a friend that loved head cheese and all kinds of organ meats. He had horrible gout that those meats aggravated. Use the term "had" because he no longer with us.

He had one of the saddest and funniest funerals I've ever been to. Being Irish they had a single bagpipe player play greensleeves starting at the casket and walking slow out of the church and out into the distance until you couldn't hear the bagpipe any more. There wasn't a dry eye. Then after the service they had a wake style reception where they encouraged drinking and everyone took turns telling amusing anecdotes about him or that included him, hilarious.

Happy Hump day.

Another rainy day. Hopefully the remains of the hurricane that hit Mexico and came across all the ground will head on east. The folks in the north east may get a big storm, and Texas gets more rain.

We are going to tour the Masonic Temple in Guthrie today. The original state capitol was at Guthrie in downtown Guthrie. The Masons built a large imposing building at the top of a hill away from the downtown area. It is not usually open for public tours as it is still operated by the Masons. I will know more later today.

Texas would love to send enough rain to cause state wide mudslides.

We are a few inches above normal, nothing extreme. Just drizzly and overcast here. IFR flight conditions. So no flying today most likely.

Mom grew up on a ranch in NM, part of what was originally the Chisolm ranch.
Her mom was the cook and bottle washer, her dad was a ranch hand. this was after he got back from the south pacific in WWII.
One of his jobs on the ranch was to shoot rabbits.
He'd stand on the back of a model A flatbed truck as it cruised through the desert and when he saw a rabbit spook he'd shoot it.
They'd go out once a week when weather permitted and grandma would make up enough rabbit stew to feed the entire crew for several days.

Grandpa had a single shot lever action 22LR he bought for $11 during the depression, worked and saved up for a long time to get it and he used it to put food on the table. I never found out what happened to his father but he was gone and my grandpa was the provider at an early age.
Needless to say he was a really good shot with that rifle.
He taught me to shoot and i 'member his saying "when you only have one shot, you learn to make it count".

Went to visit Uncle Zek's ranch.
They had an old pickup truck with a hoop on the hood ornament. It was fun to drive all over the pastures trying to catch the quail spooked up in the hoop on the hood.

Saw a poster that had a picture of John Wayne calling Chuck Norris a whimp.

My dad talked about the days of the 1940s and 50s where a few hundred men would show up a an intersection. They would spread out to the entire mile section line and all walk in a line across a wheat field and as a jackrabbit would flush it was shot. He said they would have a pile of several hundred jackrabbits in short order. The loaded them on a truck and took them to a pit to be burned, and then covered with dirt. He said it was a regular thing. Just show up, kill jackrabbits and go home. If they flushed up almost anything it was shot. No hunting license, no permits.

When my Dad was young a couple of guys took him bird hunting with them. They had him walk out in front of them and they would shoot any birds he flushed before he could even get his gun up. They were using him for their bird dog.

He cleaned up at the barbershop and overhead them bragging. Sawed off his double barrel shotgun so it would have a wide pattern. He went with them again. When he flushed the first covey he was ready, quickly raised that double barrel and let go with both barrels. Said he got every bird in the covey. He then rushed to the town barbershop and cleaned is birds telling everyone how those guys were not going to use him as a bird dog any more.

The guys came into the barbershop a bit later and tried to continue bragging about how they used my Dad for a bird dog. My Dad walked out from the back holding up all his cleaned birds and said he would be happy to go bird dogging for they any time they wanted.

My Granddad on my Dad's side's name was William Patrick Davis, everyone called him Pat.
My Dad was the first born male and they named him after his grandfather George Alva Davis.
My Dad's next younger brother was named after his father William Patrick Davis. Everyone called him Bill, or more often Junior.
My Dad's sisters and mother called him Alvi. Growing up everyone else called my Dad Little Pat.
When he got older everyone called him George except his sister's that still called him Alvi.
My older brother was named George Alva Davis after my Dad and he was always just called George.

My name is Richard Kent Davis. Until I was in 7th grade I went by Kent. In 7th grade we had all those different teachers and I got tired of correcting and telling them I went by Kent so just started answering to Richard. By HS everyone was calling me Richard except for my Mom and Grandmother. They liked Kent better. After my grandmother passed Mom started calling me Richard like everyone else. Didn't really care, just went by what was the least hassle.

When I worked at a pizza place in college there was another Richard they kept getting my time cards confused with so started signing all my time cards Clark Kent, then Superman. My time didn't get messed up after that. All the waitresses called me Kent from the Clark Kent on the time cards even though they all knew I went by Richard everywhere else.

Kinda funny all my old friends call me Wet from my hacker name The Wet One. They all go by and are mentioned by their real first and last names or people don't know who they are talking about. Except Me. They all still call me Wet and don't really even know my real name.

Thought about all this because the bird dog thing was when my Dad really made a name for himself in the little town he grew up in.

My name is Glen, Everyone calls me Glen. It was a convenient name in high school. No one came up with a derogatory derivation, rhyme or nickname to call me. Of course I changed schools every year so no long term friends or nemesis in school.

My dad's dad was nicknamed Red. Not because of red hair, but his face would get really red when he was hot. Since he worked in an era before air conditioning, he was hot a lot. My face gets really red when I am hot. I can't count how many times people have asked if I was OK when I was just hot and sweaty. My forehead and face don't just sweat, I spew. I always need a sweat band if I am doing physical labor.

The Scottish Rite Masonic Temple was pretty cool.

https://guthriescottishrite.org/

It was built in 1921 and cost 3 million. They said it would cost over 700 million to replace it now. Very neat place. They picked Guthrie because it was going to be the state capitol and they wanted to be in the center of it all. The City of Guthrie built a community hall and used it for city offices for two years, then the state legislature actually met twice there. Then the great seal was taken to Oklahoma City, and the legislators all moved to OKC.

They eventually put a connecting hall to the convention center and it is open to weddings, and parties and even has a full kitchen downstairs that can handle 300 people at once.

One cool piece of history they do have is the feather or Quill pen Teddy Roosevelt used to sign the statehood proclamation. It was said that the feather came from an Eagle in Oklahoma.
