i've been hit by a car in a crosswalk. i broadsided a car at 50MPH riding a motorcycle (their fault). i was hit by a car on my bicycle, compound tib-fib fracture (still fkd up, their fault). i had testicular cancer (my fault, i guess ). i broke my cheekbone in a car accident (i was the passenger). i very nearly crashed a cessna 172 (definitely my fault). i capsized a canoe last summer and nearly drowned in a 45F lake (my fault, i thought i was being careful). just last week, stung by a bee and my tongue started to swell.

i've been riding fast motorcycles for 25 years. pick your poison.

No helmet law here but as Rick correctly said, only a complete imbecile would ride without one. Personally I would never get on a motorcycle without a full-face helmet either (those stupid "beanies" that the faux-biker Harley crowd guys like to wear aren't worth a crap in a crash - check the DOT and SNELL sites). It's very easy to bust a chin, jaw, nose, etc. in a crash just as it is to have a cranial injury.

I especially like the idjuts who come up here from MA or NY (states that DO have helmet laws) and stop over the border and stick their helmets on the back seat and ride around like that "because they can". Jagoffs. You'll look real smart when you wreck and end up with a head injury with a perfectly good helmet sitting there on the seat behind you. Kind of like getting shot because your bulletproof vest was in the trunk or getting an STD because you were too lazy to reach over and grab a condom out of the nightstand.

I value what's in my head but I guess if someone else doesn't value what's in theirs, well... I just hope they die quickly and don't linger on publicly-funded life support as a vegetable for very long when they inevitably crash. If they have their own insurance/coverage and it doesn't cost me anything... do what you want.

No it shouldn't be legislated but I have a hard time respecting any person who doesn't respect themself enough take a very simple precaution.

you just described my neighbor. on his harley. why bother taking the helmet, if you aren't going to wear it? then again, why not just wear a helmet?

i feel like i have better control and awareness by wearing my helmet and other protective equipment. yeah, i used to ride helmetless, shorts, etc., back when i was young (still dumb, but i digress), so i do know the difference.

I don't wear a helmet when riding around the neighborhood, but that's once every few mos. when getting the oil warmed up for a change or buying ice at the corner gas station. I'm not getting dressed up for going a mile or two roundtrip. But once I know I'm crossing the red light about 1/2 mile from my house, I wear full gear no matter the weather (which is going to really suck today).

a helmet would be a good investment for the insurance company. they could include a clause that they won't cover anything if the rider is not wearing a helmet.

i wear a helmet if i am leaving the driveway with my bike. all it takes is one mistake by myself or another driver.

Worst drop I ever had was in front of my house. Sand, never saw it. Ran up to the corner for a pack of smokes. Was wearing helmet but no other gear, got banged up pretty good.

Ex's brother had just finished washing his bike. Took it for a dry off ride. Shorts, wife beater, sandals. Tranny locked up (shaft drive Harley) a half block from the house. He was a mess.

My buddy Kurt, taking a quick run around the corner for an errand, woman makes a turn in front of him, actually into him, he got launched pretty good. Bike totaled, he has a couple of broken bones and some nice road rash.

Chit happens when you least expect it.

They key doesn't get switched on until I have full gear on. Period.

As for the law, maybe they should have something akin to the donor card. When you get your motorcycle license you agree that if you're in a crash without a helmet no public money will be spent on your care other than to harvest organs. And if you don't have a moto license the above is assumed to be the case. Then you don't need a helmet law - people can make the choice. And going without they waive their right to burden the taxpayers with medical costs based on their choice.

this accident was local here, on the news quite a bit. interesting to see it get picked up nationally.

i quite riding last year but have ridden in NY state for about 10 years and cant imagine even wanting to ride without a helmet. i have had everything from cheeseburgers to birds bounce off my helmet at highway speeds. Even riding with the face shield up is painful when stones or large insects hit your face going more than 10mph

after much contemplation and experience, i believe that riding a motorcycle on public roads with or without a helmet is the riskiest activity i could engage in 2nd only to playing russian roulette. Glad i got it out of my system

in NY there is NO medical insurance coverage for bikes. your injured, your problem. Hopefully your private health insurance will cover it or if there is a negligent 3rd party, their insurance may cover which may or may not require a lawsuit to get the money.

if you have a 1 person bike accident here and dont have health insurance, you are seriously screwed

A rider here in Tucson was leaving the dealer on his Ducati after just getting new tires. He pulled out of the parking lot and with the new slippery tires, lost control of the bike and crashed. He wasn't wearing a helmet. His head hit the curb and he was killed.

Years back there was a kid who lived down the street from me. He wanted a bike but his mother wouldn't have any of that. She'd always say "you'll get killed on one of those things". The rule was no bike as long as he lived at home. This kid knew everything you could want to know about street bikes, he ate slept and dreamt bikes. Right after graduation he got his own apartment and about six months later he had his bike. In an effort to keep mom happy he wore all the gear, helmet , gloves, leathers the works. One day he was flying down the street (yep speeding) and had a car pull out in front of him. He hit it right in the drivers door, the bike flew up in the air and landed in the IN the window of the drivers door, he went over the top of the car and was killed. Turns out it was his mother who had pulled out in front of him.
