Howzit? N00b here. I put a shortcut to this thread on my dtop to give myself time to read all of these wonderful posts. My own? I had heard that my grandad had raced with The Boys post-WWII, and they would go all the way to the beach. In 1983, I had a VW Baja Bug and decided to check out the famed-run myself. As far as I knew, I fig'gered Mulholland started at the 170/HWood Fwy, so that's where I started, too. Ah, maybe too long to post, but I "did it" from there, through the "famous section," across the "100 MPH Bridge," through the dirt section (open at least that winter), through Woodland Hills, back into canyons, and dumped out right there at Secos/Leo Carrillo Beach. More?

I found this thread through a friend that I shared the story on Bannings 911 in Inside Line with. He in turn said I found a 300+ page thread on the glory days of racing on Mulholland. I have now read this thread from beginning to end and it has got to be one of the greatest things I have found on the internet. I have been running canyons since i got my license in 1990. i used to tear through Mulholland Hwy in my dads 90 3/4 ton 4x4 GMC as fast as i could chasing everything that would try to get away. It was fun running down VW's, Hondas, even the occasional Ferrari and Porsche in that truck. It was also a blast taking first timers for rides down the section by the Rock Store. Not much is more eye opening than a 5000lb truck in a 40mph 4 wheel drift. My dad used to wonder how I went through brakes and tires so fast... My record was 3500 miles on a set of front pads. I started racing friends on the roads in the Santa Monica Mountains when I got my first water-cooled VW, then switched to Glendora Mountain Road to teach some of the ricers a lesson or two. My friend and I used to go up to GMR in his F150 Lightning for a good laugh. That is a story for another time. I was wondering do you guys still get together at Bob's on Friday nights? Or meet anywhere else? I would love to get to know some more fellow gear heads. I can never get enough of talking about cars.

Mr. Banning, I really like your style!!!! I am always enjoying this thread, the comments everyone posts, and the sense of history; BUT, I am really excited about the 356 Cope Resto Project you are or may be planning. It is the greatest of "joys" seeing cars such as the pictured ones being restored. That is what I call "Styling with Purpose" since cars in that condition need to be brought back. Cost is secondary to the project and restoring a classic 356.

I liked your comments on your new book being reflection centered on Mulholland Drive. I like the idea of the comments from selected people who share your love for this road.

I think I would like this book once you get it completed. Please post when it is completed and where one may obtain one.

I really appreciate your comments Steve. We are on the right track with this second book I think.

This 356 although in extremely rough condition is just too beautiful a car to just crush up and throw into the dumpster. We can rebuild it..make it a truly nice car to drive again. Besides, who doesn't love a little challenge once in a while?

This thread is very special in many ways but remember it is Derek's creation. I am just a participant along with many others from many eras.

I finally broke down and liberated my boxes of photos from storage. Right on top of the first one I opened were the only photos I have of my '65 Mustang that I ran on Mulholland. Photos are from the 1977 Willow Springs "Vintage" Races. Vintage was defined as 10 years old or older. Required safety equipment were seatbelts, a helmet and long sleeves. My buddies nicknamed the car "Marvel the Mustang". Those of us of a certain age will probably recall the toy by the same name.

Somehow, Porsche has managed to carve 53 acres out of the crowded Los Angeles basin to build a test track and customer delivery center; the facility is slated to open in 2013. Echoing a similar facility that will be built near Atlanta—which will also have Porsche’s new North American headquarters on site—the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, California, will include a test track that is twice the size of Atlanta’s, plus a customer delivery center, a gymnasium, a gift shop, a café, and whatever else Porsche can think of between now and the groundbreaking next summer. Construction also begins next year in Atlanta.




Porsche is spending more than $100 million on the two facilities, which will resemble ones it already has in Germany, England, and China. And if nothing else, it may shut up those critics who said Porsche’s absorption by the mega-rich Volkswagen Group was a bad thing. The Carson facility will be located about 18 miles south of downtown L.A. and about 15 minutes from LAX airport (except from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., when it’s more like 45 minutes). Carson will have a handling course that includes special surfaces to replicate rain, ice, and snow, plus an off-road course that includes 45-degree inclines.

That Porsche facility is right across from the Goodyear Blimp, and down the street from the Carson mall. I think it is where the old golf course used to be. I was wondering where you would find that much land anywhere in the greater LA area that didn't have a housing development or 7 Eleven on it already. I drove by it twice this weekend and there is construction equipment out there already.

I went to Erwin Street elementary school with Johns brother Curt. I think the Mom was Linda. Used to go to the Teen Center to race BMX bikes on Victory. Another friend Leo Firpo and I used to hang at their house on Margate off of Hazletine, Last I saw Curt was building a small block Plymouth Arrow, John I think also had a 911. I have not seen the brothers since August of 1990. What ever happened to them? John was into road cars, Curt into street/ strip cars..thats where the link was amongst a lot of friends who got into drag racing.

You have a great memory. I have no idea what they're up to these days; haven't seen them since probably around the same time.

We will meet at noon, and start racing at approx 1 pm. We will continue till there is a winner, or we get kicked out

So if some of you men of mayhem care to join us, please do so. Bring your boots as we are sure some of the tales of yore will get pretty deep

A Porsche once owned by the "King of Cool," Steve McQueen, is being sold at auction this summer.

The1970 911 S is itself a veteran of the silver screen, having been featured in the opening sequence of McQueen’s epic tribute to his love of automobiles and motorsports, “Le Mans.” It was used as the actor’s personal car during the filming of the movie in France while he was living in a rented 30-room 15th century chateau. The car is mentioned in book, “Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon,” in a passage where the star takes a Hollywood executive visiting the set on a 100 mph ride through the French countryside.

The car will cross the block at the RM Auctions Monterey event in California in August. The company says the coupe “remains in exceptionally original condition.” According to a 2008 story on InsideLine.com, McQueen brought it with him back to California after filming wrapped, but sold it a year later.

Interestingly, the Porsche is painted nearly the same shade of green as the car McQueen is better known for, the Ford Mustang that he drove through the streets of San Francisco in the 1968 smash hit “Bullitt.”

RM has not offered an estimated price for the Porsche, but according to NADAGuides.com well-maintained versions of the model have a street value of $33,200, without the Hollywood pedigree, of course. In 2007, an ex-McQueen 1963 Ferrari 250 was sold for $2.3 million, nearly five times what similar cars were going for at the time.
