Welcome back Bob,

We'll if you have atypical "knee pad" vent panel of that Mesozoic era, and in the knee pad you have 3 louvers on each side of the ashtray, and the two controls (thermostat and fan speed) are adjacent to the ashtray however one on each side, then you would have a genuine Behr evap/vent/blower system and the evaporator box would alike that discussed by Mr. Thomas through his very interesting thread here. There are plenty of posts/threads on this topic in the nifty-thrifty 911 Forum.

Its been fairly frustrating depending on who you talk to about the high and lows of AC especially for the novice like me. It seems that "flushing" of the components is an essential task in reviving an AC system; however, when I called one of the leading AC shops in Atlanta today to inquire about the cost of "flushing", they responded with, "why on earth would you do that"?! Well, because I was informed it had to be done! They hardly ever flush a system unless a compressor is grinding up and then they claim all you have to do is look at the oil for metal particles.

I have therefore decided, that I will take my very small Honda generator and place it in the back seat of my 911. I will vent the exhaust out the side rear window. I will then install a 5,000 btu window unit in the passenger side window and support it with wood and duck tape! I expect it might make some Guinness
record, but think how KOOOOOL I will be!!!! I know.......I'll be careful on the turns.

that's a great idea... at least then you know where to go to get the parts replaced and know it will work again.. I live in northern CA and from all accounts there are no good AC people. So if I do this "upgrade" I suppose I'll drive to LA and check in to a motel while it gets evacted, charged/etc. I'm not sure why the ac shops can't have some agreement on how to do this stuff... I don't think it is rocket science if you are in the ac fix business.....

If your system has been exposed to atmosphere for some time and you don't know what type of oil was used then you would be shooting craps if you simply dumped in any kind of oil back into the system. Yes, under normal circumstances you don't have to flush if there is no contamination, however that does not seem to be the overall situation.

You need 10k btu's. So put one 5k on each side of the car.

My wife and I went out for dinner tonight. On the way home from the restaurant she asked me to turn the A/C off. She was too cold. This may be the nicest thing she has ever said to me!

I feel your pain, no wait, I mean I share your joy. My wife has diverted the air from her when it was 100 degrees outside. She was getting cold on a HOT day after a short time. It was the ultimate happy result for the A/C upgrade. The real test is getting yourself cold on a hot day after a day at the track. Spend all day in the sun with your car in the sun. Then jump in for the trip home and get cold in a 1985 911 Carrera. It is a wonderful thing.

Since this seems like its becoming the ultimate AC thread here's point of reference. I have the Rennaire system II w/desert duty & original decklid condensor installed running 134A. Yesterday afternoon in Tucson the temps hit 107 - and that's at the airport. Downtown on the asphalt between the buildings it's probably a bit hotter. Maybe 110.

So at 5:00 start up the car that's been sitting in the sun all day and I can get 58 degree vent temps sitting in traffic on Congress St where theres a traffic light about every 50 ft it seems. Then once I get out of the congestion where I can cruise for a bit the vent temps drop down to about 52. Not making icicles, but even the 58 felt pretty good actually. All in all thats a 50 degree drop from ambient and was enough to be comfortable.

Hmm. Maybe over the winter adding a Griffiths fender condensor might be a good project. It would be interesting to know what the incremental improvement is. And since my evaporator fan is starting to make noises I too would be interested in a Kuel Wirbelsturm for an '86!

Yeah - my evaporator box is closed up, too. Next overhaul, though.....

The pic in the ad seems to suggest that it only works in the Northern Hemisphere, however.
