venison, the meat.
I stopped hunting for about a decade. not entirely sure why. maybe the PIA of it all.
but I'm back. I just ate my last hunk of doe-venison, and I will need to get more this fall/winter. my brother has property in TX, now and it is pretty fun camping, shooting, hunting, etc. just being brothers. a doe, a turkey, and a small hog gets it done annually for me. I have three pieces of turkey breast remaining. I ate much less store bought meat this time around, and it has been kinda nice. not less expensive because of the trip, but the meat is nice tasting. leaner, and according to most, better for us? I am a doe hunter now. it is delicious and my favorite of the meat I brought home. my last hunk went down as street tacos. super stress relief using two Chinese cleavers to chop up the hunk.

I'm not a fan of venison...I think it's mostly the smell. I don't mind elk, though. But at the end of the day, I do my "hunting" at the grocery store--just so much simpler. I don't have a problem with hunters (or even hunting). To me, it's the processing part that I could do without. I appreciate all that the butcher does for me

Nice. I've never been hunting, but I've been given venison from a buddy a couple of times. I love it. I've never noticed any unpleasant or even strong smell or taste.

My unscientific opinion is that a doe is way more yummy than a rutty buck.

Great show to watch about hunting, deer mainly, and cooking them. Based in the UK where there are 6 species of deer. Dude has a Michelin star IIRC.
Episodes are on Roku and other streaming platforms.

Looks yummy! This thread definitely made me hungry. Seeing everyone's photos and meal ideas has me thinking about what to order for dinner now. I even started looking up some of the bad fast food chains out of curiosity, although that's probably not the best idea when you're already hungry. I think I'll skip the risky options and order something I know I'll enjoy instead. Hopefully it arrives quickly because this discussion has definitely worked up my appetite

Every time I go back home to Illinois, I stock up on venison from my nephews. Used to be my dad and uncle but, Dad would rather sit out in the woods and watch the wildlife now rather than hunt.
I can devour a whole stick of venison summer sausage in a single setting,,, YUM!

I really like venison. The only whole meat I use is backstrap, which I prefer to beef filet. The remainder is ground. I use it for bolognese, chili, tacos, meatballs.
I don't really have a problem with the smell of browning it, but I have a big hood. I'm not a hunter, but we have tons of deer on my property and my son in law harvests for me.

I recently had Tenderloin of Venison in a very upscale French restaurant and it was fantastic. It is the perfect blend of beef and lamb.

God I hate the smell of venison in the morning... or anytime really.
My momma would get all excited when my brother would go deer hunting. Thoughts of inexpensive venison to feed her family filled her head. Me, I'd get terribly upset. I'd pray he wouldn't kill any deer. For years my family assumed it was because I felt bad for the poor defenseless deer, but that wasn't it. I felt bad because if he shot any deer we'd be dining on that nasty meat for months, gaaaa! PS - I didn't care how you prep or cook venison. It's always gamey and nasty.

Roasts we brine then grill. Backstrap and chops go on the smoker. Some goes in stew or stir fry.
Brining really helps if the smell bothers you.

For those that think it is "gamey" etc
There is a big difference between shooting a deer and having it butchered and on ice with 2-3 hours vs shooting a deer and throwing it in your truck and then hitting every bar in the area to have a beer or two while you show off your monster buck, eventually ending up too drunk to butcher it until the next day I am fortunate in that my "hunting" is from a buddys living room couch, when we shoot a deer it is butchrred and on ice in about 2 hours from the trigger pull. Seeing as how our muzzle loader season starts in October and we are more likely to be smakicking mosquitos than complaining about cold toes and fingers

I don't have the hunting or camping gene. To me camping is a motel with slow Wi-Fi.
My brother loves it, and bow hunting. Or he used to. I think he has aged out of it. His record was 18 deer in one year. He lives in Alabama, and the only restriction was no more than one doe and one buck in possession. So get it back to the butcher, and go get another in the same day, legally. There are more deer in Alabama than humans.

No gene here either. I was somewhat railroaded as a kid because my mother's side of the family were outdoorsmen, as they were called. I fished but drew the line at killing with a gun. As soon as I discovered girls and cars, in that order, my attention towards outdoor life was reduced to cruising the streets in search for girls or a race, in no particular order. Races were much easier to find.

A few times in the last 15 years, I had a buddy that did hunting gift me some of the deer that he bagged including backstrap, stew meat, and ground, and I never noticed any strong or distinctive flavor. It tasted like meat.

I was born/raised in Endicott NY . We had a meat delicacy called a spiedie . You take the meat of your choice and cut up into chunks or cubes . Then marinate for a few days in spiedie sauce or Italian salad dressing . You then slide the meat onto skewers and cook on the grill .
No such thing as a bad spiedie . Chicken/beef/pork/venison . When venison is marinated in the fridge for 3-4 days it is tender with a great taste . The proper way to eat is take a slice of fresh Italian bread , put some butter on it and slide the spiedies off the skewer into the bread . Add a frosty cold one and it is an experience .

I remember my dad going hunting once when I must have been about 4. He brought back, I think, 2 or 3 squirrels, and we ate them. I think I remember him going hunting one other time, I may have been 8 or 10. I don't remember any food coming out of that. For him, I think it was more about spending time with his buddies than the hunting or food.

Okay, this thread title has me perplexed. Is there any venison that isn't meat?
