My brother with MS lived with us. It wasn't about comfort..but. If the temperature got above 70°F he would not just get hot and sweaty, but he would become paralyzed and couldn't move. We noticed his bedroom would be 5°F above the reset of the house. It faced the West, but was insulated well and had trees shading his room. Put in a ceiling fan, had the duct work checked, and even put a vent booster fan on the vent in his room. Nothing helped much. Ended up putting a window A/C unit in his room. What was really weird, in the winter it would still be warmer in that room. Seems like if it was an insulation problem it would be cooler in that room in the winter instead of warmer year round. Had to keep the window A/C unit running year round. Thought it might have been the brick on the south facing wall in that room, but there are big crepe myrtles shading that wall all day.
After he passed we moved the thermostat up and that room is as comfortable as the rest of the house so I've taken the window unit out.

A month later we got hit with a huge storm with tress down and hail damage. A big trees fell where the condenser is located but the branches landed on either side of it with no damage.

Have a good Friday gentlemen!
I'm off to make popcorn for the school. Our principal is retiring to go to another job outside education so we are giving a bag to every student and he's buying. The money the kids bring will go towards a "buddy bench" in the name of a 4th grade girl that passed in December. I'm going to put in a little extra in the cash box.

I lived in Hawaii for several years and we never had AC in the house. Most of the time it was not bad. We had single wall construction. In one house my bedroom had slats like wide wooden blinds that would roll open and just let the breeze blow through. No screens no insulation of any sort. One winter it got down to 59. Now you Michigan and Yankees may scoff at 59 but let me tell you when EVERYTHING everywhere is 59 and there is no heat, no blankets and no coats and you are stuck in it for a day that is cold! We finally got in our car that was shipped from the states and had a heater and drove around just to get warm. We did not bring any blankets or coats with us. Of course as kids we would have outgrown any coat from the previous state. The locals walked around in Parkas. You would think it was a village of the Inuit with all the cold weather gear.
Hey, TGIF! (Except you Jim, since it is Saturday again for you)

The second time the compressor on the A/C went out trying to keep the house 70° in the hot summer I put a new system in. A/C guy made me a really good deal too. $2100 for new 2-1/2 ton unit installed and rebuilt the plenum box. That was cheaper than I could find a unit on the internet.
The guy started the replacement on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Told me he would give me a good deal if I let him go fishing for the long weekend and finish on Tuesday. Since the daytime temps were in the low 70's I jumped on it.

We had to replace the outside compressor two years ago. The company we use is owned by the family of a former co-worker of my wife. We get the friend pricing and service.

The first time my A/C went out it was a fiasco. I had a home warranty for the new house and had to use the company they sent out. Took 2 days before they could send someone. The guy they sent ruined the new compressor filling it with liquid by turning the freon bottle upside down. Then we had to wait another 2 days for them to find a new compressor.
The next time the compressor died not wanting to go thru that again I called around explaining my brother's 70° situation and this was the first guy that would come out that day. Has told me if I have any problems to call and to help keep it cool for my brother he would be here THAT day. Gave me both is company and personal phone numbers. He explained we were going to be going thru a compressor every year because 2 tons just wasn't big enough to try to keep the house at 70°. That and the system being 18 years old I decided to put a new one in. He went ahead and replaced the compressor free of charge to keep it cool until the new unit came in. Pretty happy with his service!

We don't have a compressor four our A/C outside. Makes it nice and quiet when we are outside messing around.
Glen, my wife will sympathize with you. She grew up in a place warmer on average than where Sid is now and went to Chili for 10 days while in college. The family she stayed with did not have a water heater and the bathroom had a window with no glass. She said they were very quick showers because it was averaging around 49* while she was there. Me on the other hand, I scoff at you and your "cold" weather! (Monty Python french accent here)

What happens when you keep putting gas in your car and don't drive it enough...

Made the popcorn and had a meeting with the school about our son's transition to 6th grade next year.
Th good news is he won't have to ride the short bus. Like Jeff Spicoli, he will probably just squeak by.

That's great Wayne. Squeaking by is better than not.
I got to play VW mechanic this morning. One of the plastic bits (y-connector) in the Jetta's cooling system developed a crack and we were losing coolant. Luckily the V-dub dealer was close by so I could get the replacement part. It now looks like the cooling system is back to normal.
