For the life of me i don't understand Corvette haters.
I would take any 60s era vette over any 60's 911. While they were underpowered, the 70's "Mako Shark" Vette's are absolutely gorgeous machines. The 80s vettes were ugly, i never liked them, but once they put the LT-1's into them around 94 and up, they were damned competitive with anything around for a heck of a lot less money. The C-5s and up are very pretty cars. I don't really like the "Viper" lights on the latest Vettes, but that's my only complaint with them. As far as image, anyone that is buying their car because of what others think of them has self-esteem issues. Just because Italians like to drive Vette's, it is not a valid knock on the car. Really it amuses me that some would be dissuaded from a Vette because of it's "image".....afterall, Porsche owners are largely held to be totally arrogant stuck up jerks. JOKE: "What's the difference betwen a porsche and a porcupine. On a porcupine, the pricks are on the outside." Quote:
To say that a Porsche holds up long term better than a Vette with equal maintenance is just plain not correct. But hey, thanks! I do try to be entertaining when i go on my little tirades! ![]() LOL, gee, thanks! What should i buy to impress the Doctor of Physics that i am going out with tonight?

i'd be willing to bet your 'hatred' of 911's comes almost entirely from your perception of the owners you've met. Live and work in a big city and meet high paid execs driving newly leased turbos....sure you're gonna form a bad opinion. Just like a guy who spends his days doing plumbing work in trailer parks is going to form a bad opinion of vette owners.
but i promise you not ALL 911 owners care what others think of them. and if i had to make an honest guess i'd bet a psych eval of 911 owners and vette owners would show a higher % of vette owners bought their cars for image and not driving experience.

For most of their life they were, in essence, supremely well done hot rodded VW Beetles. I like my 928 because it is a German Vette. A Vette with a whole 'nother level of refinement and handling (when compared to same year vettes), and because they're really affordable. Finally, i love their looks, especially the flip up headlights. I would own a 911 in a heartbeat too, if i could find one that didn't have the "Porsche tax" attached to it. Fat chance. I gave up on being a one-marque fan-boi about the same time I graduated from high school.
I'd love a GT2. Or a Corvette. Or a Viper. Or an Elise. Or an M3. My dream stable includes a ZR1, no doubt. Right alongside my 92 LT1 six-speed C4. |

"When" money is no object, this will be parked next to my redhead in Robs stable.....
![]() ![]() btw boyz, when choosing your dream car, price is not the deciding factor; that's why it's a dream car. Whether I fit into the car or not does though, and I doubt the vette will work? It's half the size of my Pcar!!! |

Couldn't have said it better. There is no such thing as an 'official Ring Record'... (But that's some spirited driving right there!)

There was a ZR-1 at the last DE I was at - one of the ex rally drivers was driving it. It was so friggin fast. he had bruises on his knees from bracing himself inside the car (the seats sucked) when he came in the tires were rounded from kissing the fender wells, and the transmission tunnel was so hot that the cheap ass cheby carpeting was melting the glue and it was pulling away. It looked like crap. Still - it was so friggin fast. I would have loved to take a few laps.
Actually I could care less about the brand. I do like the fact that you can drive the piss out of a Porsche - and it runs better afterwards - not many cars around that you can say that with. The ZR1 and the Z06 are ALOT of car for the money. They have a passion about keeping the weight off their vehicles - and they build them for function first. (sound familiar?) I think it's great that Excellence did an article and announced the ZR1 fro what it is. Makes them 100% more credible in my book.

Me neither, but then I'm a car guy AND a Porsche guy.

Drive what you want for the reason that you want, whatever makes you happy. Corvettes are valid performance vehicles. I don't think that you can knock them for that. They've won races over the years. You definitely can't knock a Corvette because of it's hairy chested gold chain image. Porsche's have just as much driver-image problem as a Corvette. Poking fun at them is fine assuming it's just for fun or as a friendly rivalry, but when it gets serious is when I scratch my head. If you're going to pick on a car group, make it the idiot ricers. Not all of them are idiots, but you know the group, the snot nosed idiot bunch that do mods to make their cars LOOK faster, but that actually make the cars GO slower. Those are the idiots that need a good wallop to the back of the head with a 2x4.

Nope...still have an '09 Bullitt Mustang. 2,800 on the clock now. It got Cindy & I to the pool hall & back this afternoon. Parked it on the street, clicked it's alarm on, went in the hall to play for a few hours without caring about the car. After all, it is just a Mustang...nice driver, tho. So, as long as we're talking car fantasies...guess I'd rather buy 3 or 4 Mustangs, wear 'em out one at a time... ![]() I'll leave running the 'Ring to the pros...these days, I just want to get where I'm going in comfort and well balanced performance ability. (edit)...Gotta admit, that Ring video was impressive as hell!

I own two chevy's, a silverado and a "che'vete" My silverado is a 2002 with 170k miles on it. The "che'vette is a '06 with 70k miles on it. The carpet in the truck is alot pluser and it's loops are about 3 times as many loops per square inch as the "che'vette" Truck weights in at 5,200 #'s, the che'vette weighs in at 3,160 #'s I've had the carpet out in both vehicles. The truck for cleaning up a scalloped patatoes cooked with cream, goat cheese, & white wine spilt in it. The che'vette for preping it for a track day. The trucks carpet has sounddening material with it and the carpet weights 4x per square inch over the che'vette. My truck is SOLID! and has no extra noise ( well at under 70mph the weather strips on the rear side doors and windows are old and dry) The che'vette needs to have it's clutch/brake pedal lubed. When there's zero load on them they squeak over bumps. I do not own a porsche. I was planning on buying a long hood or other 911 but my wife needs a wheelchair every now and then. We can fit a wheelchair in the che'vette PLUS luggage for two for a three day weekend. (that and get 27mpg at 75ish and top out at 186 mph all for $48k, I got mine for 41k due to a gm discount from my BIL )

I love them both, and have one of each. The Vette is so incredibly capable. The Porsche is so visceral. Totally different, like two guitars, an acoustic and an electric. Both good in their own way, with their own personality.
My Vette Bose system did catch on fire. Porsche's have never done that to me......

Love the video. That is very much how my 928 sounds and drives, but obviously a lot faster, and much more power. You can hear how it scrubs the tires while remaining neutral to a little bit of understeer turning into oversteer or more scrub, or both. You can overcook a little, without fear, and maybe not even lose any speed.
There is no question that I love how 911s drive, but I do track my 928, and it does keep up with some fast 911s. I am only a mid level track driver, BTW. If you watch the Video again, look to see where he comes in to a couple of corners very hot, and scrubs off the speed. It tends to make them look like a big horse on the autocross, and they will not AX effectively on a very wet track, but they have many of the attributes of a Miata, where you can dance it on the throttle. It doesn't feel as nice in a big car, but it is there to be used, and they can take a little bit of ham fistedness without much fuss. A great introductory car for going really fast. Really fast. |

my 95 vette was parked in front of the house. i live in the stix. a neighbor hit it hard enough to ruin all four stock magnesium wheels. vette had full performance exhaust, etc. excellent power and mpg. handled well enough in rain, and once, while on a job on the high desert, ran approx 10 miles in rain up to the doors, never missing a beat. interior stayed dry. i loved that car. stumbled into owning the '78 930. i've had it 5 years. recently started developing a real affection for this car. starting to trust and respect it. i started to really love the car when i started "personalizing" it. removing air cond, replacing fuchs with 3- piece, momo, das, etc.
these 2 cars impressed me. that's the bottom line. i bought my first rolex submariner at the px in yokosuka, japan. i was 18. it cost $205.00 it is still the most recognisable watch in the world. very heavy and large. (i am a small guy). electrononic watches keep much better time. i love rolex timepieces because they are mechanical masterpieces. that impresses me. that's the bottom line |
