I was once accosted by the police while walking in Vancouver at about 3 in the afternoon. I was walking in a pretty shady area, heading to my brothers 4 blocks away. I came to an intersection, and when I stepped off the curb all of a sudded three cop cars came out of nowhere and literally hit each other coming to a stop with me trapped in the triangle formed by their front bumpers. 6 doors swung open and 6 handguns popped out pointed at me (in Canada the mere fact that they drew their weapons is remarkable). They all began screaming at me, then one reached over and literally pulled my off my feet and over the hood of the car, pinned me down knee in my back. They searched me none to gently, all the while screaming etc. to stay down. So down I stayed (momma didn't raise no idjut). So as the dust settles and the radio calls begin, it became evident that they were responding to a call of a guy that very closely fit my description (down to the clothing I was wearing, long hair, beard etc.) walking in public waving a hand gun.
Given that, I had no issue with their behaviour and told them so, possibly armed I would react pretty strongly as well. HOWEVER, at that point they decided to run my name, search my pockets and tear up my cigarette pack hoping to find a joint that they could then arrest me for. I had already said I had no issue with them taking me down if they thought I was armed, and yet these a55holes feel a need to find something on me to justify their actions. And then packed up like they were irrated with me, no appology no nothing.
The initial behaviour was warranted in this case, however their follow on actions showed them to be power hungry egotistical pricks who could not admit they had made an error.

Pinning down and gang raping is a sexual thing... Here we are again. Cops are sexual deviants.

Once when I was in band camp, I moved to Oregon. The Oregon DMV recorded my VIN as 16 numbers not 17. Got insurance with that VIN, had a copy of my former CA registration and owner docs in my possession WITH THE CORRECT VIN.

Was pulled over in Nevada by NHP while traveling. Same crap.....arrested, car towed, damaged by the contract tow company.....couldn't leave that state fast enuff.

Tow dork hooked the oil line. Opened up when it warmed up and dumped all 12 quarts. They claim it was like that when I was pulled over.....yeah, right. I just came over the Donner pass and had logged 1,000 miles that day. They even arrested my Dachshund and my .357......that fiasco cost me $3k.

Holy crap! As a friendly Canadian I would have been shot so many times in that video for not knowing the correct procedure when being pulled over in the US.

I'm a little freaked out.
Getting out of the car early to be efficient would have been my first mistake. Where do people go for awareness training about this sort of thing so they don't get shot?

Yep. Was a sweet car. I hope they didn't scratch it when they bent him over on it.

I don't deny that being a police officer is a dangerous job but on a per cop basis it's about the safest it's ever been in the history of the USA yet they act like it's not and blame their behavior on this made up risk.

Here are the facts:

It won't cost the cop a penny. he'll get a couple months of paid vacation out of it.
It'll cost the taxpayers of that state a fortune.

Education is the problem. We need better education across the whole spectrum. A few typo's by the DMV, then the Cops didn't double check when the numbers were called in. Anyone of us could find ourselves in that situation.
Just little mistakes, but then I read that so far in 2015 Cop's have killed someone every 8 hrs in the USA.

Cold comfort: From 2013-2014, German police killed absolutely no one.

I know how you feel and also understand they had a job to do catching bad guys. After they realized their mistake, they never apologize, and never will. More then likely, they were pissed that I was not the guy they were looking for. I am the most none threatening person, even a younger me. Clean cut, glasses, no tat. They basically shoved my as up against the fence took all my crap out of my bag scattered it all over the inside of my car and left my car door open. They made it looked like I owe them something. I can never understand why they could own up to their mistakes when something like this happens?

When I grew up, I was stopped and questioned multiple times by cops. Each and every time, I was lectured and let go. Maybe it's a different time now, but I still see cops as my friend. Too this day, our village cop drives by my house every morning and I wave and get a wave back. Too bad that's not the case everywhere.

My advice to get through an encounter with the Police:

Rule one, always remember right or wrong, good or bad, you will NOT win any argument with a cop on the side of the road, EVER. Forget trying anything but following orders.

Rule Two, comply with every order, do NOT make any sudden movements. Never reach for anything under a seat or in the glove box. If your registration is in the glove box tell the officer that and move slowly with his permission to get the registration.

Keep your hands in plain sight at all times.

Do not consent to any search of the vehicle, even if you are 100% innocent. They will trash or car. Ask for a supervisor.

If you feel your rights were violated don't yell at the cop, wait for a court of law.

Sometimes easier said than done.

Last time I got pulled over we were heading down to get the kids from summer camp.

Had just picked up a new SUV a few days before and we were on temp plates.

Got pulled over for speed.

Now my wife never gets pulled over.

I think once in her entire life.

She has no idea how to deal with cops. She was nervous, fumbling for paperwork, rambling, making all sorts of bizarre statements, answering questions he has not asked etc...

The whole time I'm telling her to shut up and let the man do his job so we can be on our way.

At one point the officer asks me to get out of the car and step to the back.

As we walk to the back he was peering in the windows trying to see what he could see.

Asks if everything is OK because my wife seems really nervous.

Told him it was all good, she's a goodie two shoes and has never been pulled over and unlike me it's a new experience for her.

He accepted that and we were on our way.

Had she been by herself I have no doubt she would have ended up sitting on the side of the road for an hour while they tore the car apart and waited for the canine unit to show up.

No doubt the rush of adrenalin make many people act different than they normally would. Just try hard to remain calm and answer any question honestly and do no say anything more. It is unlikely you will think of something so funny you will make the cop laugh or change his attitude. Just shut up and answer yes sir or no sir, not ya or nope or cuss at him.

Of course I am only repeating what I have read. I have not been pulled over in close to 30 years.

OK, relax. You don't need training. It's very, very, very unlikely that you're going to get shot or even rudely harrassed if you get pulled over in the US. I've been pulled over, many, many times, and never had any cop act like the stuff that you see in these clips. Treat them with respect. Answer yes sir and no sir. I've known folks that would get out of the car with no problems. I don't and wouldn't.

If you want advice, stay in the car, turn off the motor and radio, roll the window down and put both of your hands in plain sight on the top of the steering wheel. Then wait for the officer to come to the car and talk to you.

I have had very positive and very negative experiences with LEO, but they are trending towards the negative.

The European LEO's are FAR, FAR, FAR more reasonable than the ones over here in NA, there they are more interested in catching people doing stupid stuff and leave the speed enforcement to traffic camera's (which I hate btw).

The LEO's on this side of the ocean seem to have lost sight of their purpose and who the law serves, particularly with regard to highway laws. The highway laws are meant to find a balance between speed, traffic motility and safety, and as with any legal system, one can never define a set of laws with sufficient orthogonality to cover every situation, so the balanced LEO will look to see what is safe (for him to approach of course), but also what is helping flow traffic, curb the stuff that some people do that impede traffic or create unreasonable risks to themselves or others.

The crap in the video both frightens me in terms of travel to the US and also angers me.....all they had to do was ask the guy what he was doing, check out the situation with a bit of care and then do their work properly and thoroughly. Fail on so many counts.

Personally I would have gotten shot.....I would have been asking what his reasonable cause was (hands up of course) and would have died.

Ah well, better shot dead, free on your feet than a slave naked in the back seat of a LEO's car....

Dennis
